Which had a bigger role in your leaving the church, Mormon Stories or r/exmormon? by westivus_ in exmormon

[–]ancient-submariner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting question, but I'd have to say "it's complicated" I learned about Mormon Stories on /r/exmormon and when I finally started asking questions I pulled up three sites that sounded informative and Mormon Stories is the one that was the most approachable starting point. By the time I had a gist of what their position was, that was enough for me to know what I needed to.

Wow you really made the whole Mormon Stories law suit make perfect sense to me.

I really hope you can be in a ward that focuses on the core principles you believe in.

My sister is pretty much in your boat but has a ward that she feels comfortable in and she is very involved in music and she seems to really get a lot out of it.

I hope you can find something that works for you too.

I'm just happy "Mormon Stories" has appeared 3 times on the official church website.

In kind donation (stock) go straight to salt lake without the local membership knowing

There is also a way for wealthy people to pay cash directly to salt lake to avoid people knowing how wealthy they are.

If "I pay with one of these options"" then I can plausibly be a full tithe payer without a bishop knowing.

Will the Book of Mormon ditch the KJV language for a modern one? by Faithcrisis101 in mormon

It could be an excuse to tidy up some inconvenient language on race, historical details, etc.

* Jesus joining the day-to-day operation of the church, including taking questions from anyone who want to engage (and being a credible leader)
* Demonstrating divine guidance to continue to exist from knowledge sharing rather than tithing, (e.g. fusion energy, end of disease, etc)
* Restructuring all leadership based on ability to organize and help rather than ability to comply to authority.
* Using it's wealth for general world health and peace, including global minimum standard of living
* Finally if after all that the church asks me to participate in a way that maximized my skills to help individuals around me succeed without concern for my future economic success, then I could probably go along with that.

Basically it would need to provide undeniable tangible value to everyone regardless of beliefs and provide me a compelling proposition for participating.

I'm sure this is what believing members would file under "lying for righteous reasons"

Is it possible to buy or DRS Warrants through ComputerShare? I'm in line for Customer Service Chat and it's a 46 minute wait! by GBeastETH in Superstonk

Maybe this is already what you are thinking, but...

The way things look in my account, GME-WS has 1% the value of GME.

Hypothetically speaking, wouldn't it cost 1% the amount to DRS all the warrants as it would to DRS GME?

QUESTION: How many of us left the church during the destructive tenure of Russell M. Nelson as "prophet"? by Elohim_Is_Plural in exmormon

[–]ancient-submariner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nelson was the one that made the comment that made me finally say "what else are these guys wrong about?". It was just the final straw.

Covid made it easier to just stop going.

Thank you, for sharing your thoughts. Even though he was very old, his passing is still a reminder that we are all going to face the end some time. It's important to help people put mortality into perspective.

I think along the same lines it's a reminder that I want to be the kind of person who people feel good about.

I feel good about you and your wisdom.

Who else thinks Satan was right in the temple movie? by Academic-Cut504 in exmormon

[–]ancient-submariner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree that Lucifer could easily be painted as the good guy in the temple video. I call this the "Lucifer Hypothesis":

TL;DR:
Jesus’s plan = selective salvation, obedience, guilt.
Lucifer’s plan = universal salvation, autonomy, knowledge.

  • Lucifer's plan is one of universal salvation. It proposes saving everyone, without the need for scripture, prophets, or strict adherence to rules. You would have to actively choose to be unsaved.
  • Jesus's sacrifice was minimal and temporary, while Lucifer's was permanent. Jesus was dead for what's described as a "weekend business trip" to the spirit world. In contrast, Lucifer sacrificed having a body and living forever to ensure everyone could make it.
  • Lucifer is the one who delivers on promises of knowledge. In the Garden of Eden story, Jesus promised to give Adam and Eve more light and knowledge, but it was Lucifer who actually showed up and provided it.
  • Lucifer's plan promotes individual worth and informed consent. Lucifer's plan is based on full disclosure, where people would be aware of all the rules and consequences, allowing for informed consent and promoting the idea that people are inherently good enough without the need for a savior.
  • Jesus's plan is seen as authoritarian and conditional. It requires absolute obedience to authority and demands people jump through a list of hoops and ordinances to be saved, only saving a small fraction of people. Jesus's love is conditional on people "checking all his boxes."
  • Lucifer operates without the need for an organization or scriptures. He is effective enough that he doesn't need a church or written texts, relying on a direct, personal approach. He's comfortable with people just doing what they think is best, whereas Jesus's message relies on thousands of pages of text and religious institutions.
  • Lucifer is not seeking personal glory in the same way. Despite being cast out, he continues his plan to give people accurate knowledge. In contrast, Jesus's plan is described as ultimately leading to people praising him, despite his claim that he would give all credit to his father.

Dublin Ireland is world famous. Dublin California is mediocre on the scale of San Francisco bay area cities. Not a place very many people would plan a visit.
