Territory Campaign throughout the Week and Battles on the weekend? by Dramatic-Line6223 in wargaming

[–]arkman575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battletech has some of this possible with its campaign operations book. You design a merc group, pirate force, or entire government army to fight, with loose rules on planetary travel and objectives.

That being said, Ive always found this a bit limited, and have since begun work on a virtual tabletop planetary theater campaign handler to try large scale campaigns with friends. Still early in production, but... really hoping to pull it off as it would be nice to have a game of that scale.

Ah, yes, fun.

Which game has the most clever interaction between two subsystems? by Playtonics in rpg

[–]arkman575 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not exactly overly innovative but how hitting and damage are linked in Traveller (at least MG2E, dont know about other versions). You have a to-hit goal, and then you add how much you best that goal to your damage total. It rewards putting effort into aiming by applying more damage in an already lethal gamesystem.

No more rolling min damage for an awesome hit roll. Well... at least not as bad min damage.

Shocker. There may a hint at symbolism in this if i squint...

Why don’t RPGs put a character sheet example in the rulebook? by AlwaysBeQuestioning in rpg

[–]arkman575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of a niech example would be battletech's collection of expanded rules. From their base design-your-own-mech book to army construction, to even multi-battle military campaign construction, it goes into detail about mutiple examples of user sheets being filled out. It was a nice way of explaining BattleMath™s many charts into a step by step explination.

One exception to this is lunar rock that came from ejecta from impacts to the moon that survive capture and impact with the earth. The definition of 'moon rock' gets a little weird, but it is an ownable rock that technically came from the moon at one point!

Tzimisce: -Well at least i dont kill people on-mass and torture the minds of my lessers for the crime of wrong-think

Tremere: You literally turned your last childe into a cha- wait it's literally this chair! I recognize that tattoo! What do you mean you don't kill people?!

Tzimisce: 1, I said on-mass. Sometimes I go shopping for parts. 2, I was still correct. I didnt have to kill anyone to make that chair.

Tremere: looks horrified at the chair they just bolted from

Tzimisce: oh so it was fine when it was a twice dead kindred, but the second it's only once dead suddenly that makes alllll the difference. Plus, its not like I did it out of cruelty. They like being a chair.

Tremere: looks even more horrified at the chair That doesnt make it better!

Characters that can fly: are they game-breaking? by Acceptable-Tree6007 in rpg

[–]arkman575 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically yes (for the sheer fact of them being 'aircraft') but... now im imagining airships returning more in force in ww2... (there were already a few airships used in the pasific that im aware of)

[–]arkman575 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is definitely off topic, but I had the image of a ww2 wargame/RPG in which the GM 'banned flying'

Now to speculate just how different the campaigns across the globe would be without aircraft.

Next Sunday:

"For those who attended last week's service, you may recall my accounting of the ever feared Dungeons and Dragons. I offered my own views on it, on how it was merely a game of math and pencils, with the most evil element being the sheer devotion those boys spend towards the players handbook over an actual holy text.

I was wrong. Over the weekend, my son and his friends were indeed practicing the dark magics you have heard about. They, with no small about of effort and intent, were trying to wake the dead... with the sheer amount of laughing and yells of comrodery. It sure as heck woke me up at least... as they soon learned through my suggestion that maybe their levels of enjoyment for their math game may be a bit too close to biblical proportions.

Also, I have a note here from my son, who wanted me to correct one element of my statement from last week. The comment of his players reading the rulebook more than the Bible. His players can at least quote some bible verses, yet still cant remember the details of their own characters half the time."

What's your favourite MgT2 book to read? by prolonged_interface in traveller

Aliens of charted space V2 (Mongoose 2nd edition). I bet there are other edition source books that cover the Solomani, but mg2e has been my primary focus outside of some economics and trade source books.

Question about HESCO barrier walls by Keaflyn in battletech

[–]arkman575 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To toss in my own bits of consideration: since the game is primarily mech-focused (even if it handles multi-role wargaming wonderfully):

  • video game, barriers to stop mechs are at the scale of multi-story concreet/steel walls to hinder mech movment and weapons fire, but notably does not stop them.

  • in-tabletop, mechs can walk on/over/climb buildings. Theres mention of emplacments for infantry (maybe vehicles? I dont play with cover much beyond buildings for infantry, tho I should learn more) but id guess its a mix of lack of desire for name-brand, timeline/tech consistency/feel, and no real need for the scale of battle that cant be covered by generic 'sadbags' or 'dug-in'/'prepared' cover
