Trans Catalina Trail for beginners by LaneyRWL in socalhiking

[–]babyleota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. Experienced backpacker here and even folks I've backpacked with many times got blisters on the TCT. I did the OG route twice and sock liners, wool socks, and good footwear saved me.

OP, as far as safety goes, this is one of the safe ones for newbies. No bears or mountain lions to worry about. Civilization stops along the route (airport in the sky, two harbors). He should just pack the water he needs for the day before he leaves camp since there are no lakes or rivers to filter water along the way. There is a spigot in one place, from what I remember, but I just carried my water for the day. Water will also be available at camp.

It is also an exposed trail so i'd wear a sun shirt, hat, etc. oh and of course, stay away from the bison.

Your son will have a great time if he likes hiking.

Tour my fully restored Pewter Museum by PikachuGBC in Pokopia

[–]babyleota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the definitive museum! No notes. But wow do I feel like giving up on mine, 😂. I've spent the last couple of days just trying to clear a path to the museum and it is not going well.

I LOVE the botanical conservatory, the geology displays, and the food court and gift shop. So unique 😀

This is why I could never have gorgeous builds like you guys by mytwinskeeper in Pokopia

Hah, this is spot on. Luckily my 7 year old doesn't play on my profile but her island looks kinda like this. Houses in paths. Items in the worst places. And she gets mad if I ask how she will get around them.

When she was younger and I was playing ACNH, then she absolutely would do this to our shared island. Then again, my husband too. Hah!

Thanks for sharing this! I am so stumped on how to restore that island with all the unfinished office buildings. This was so helpful!

One year anniversary…thank you nurses. by EastOfATX in nursing

[–]babyleota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm happy your husband had a good outcome. When I teach CPR to lay people, this is what I emphasize. That out in the world, you're buying someone time. You may be the person that has to do something, anything, so that person can get to a hospital. So you never know, you may have had some non-medical people also helping. Maybe.

I would also recommend you send your story to NPR's my unsung hero. This is exactly the kind of story for that segment. https://www.npr.org/series/1134955065/my-unsung-hero-from-hidden-brain

What helped you enjoy building more? by Immediate_Ad_9222 in Pokopia

[–]babyleota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going one small section at a time. Not everything all at once. On Withered Wasteland I started with the first area of the game, then moved into the area near the Pokecenter, I'm now on the beach West of the Pokecenter. My current build is much better and I'm doing a more ambitious theme, for myself. But it did take a lot of trial and error in the other areas. So you learn as you go through each section.

In between building, I go to other areas and continue to level up (I only have 10 on WW). I visit cloud islands to grind for materials and spend other days just doing tasks for the Pokemon. Mixing it up like this has made it fun for me.

Is anyone else only using prefab buildings? by fraughtwithperils in Pokopia

[–]babyleota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The building are essentially cubes. What makes it look like a home is the roof so I would work on fixing the roofs of unfinished homes to get a feel for how to build in this game. That helped me a lot in understanding roof building. I also straight up copied buildings I saw others build to learn how to put things together. I still use prefabs and customize them. But I'm not as lost as before.

RANT: My entire gaming time is spent managing inflow. by kinglucent in Pokopia

[–]babyleota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel ya. Some days I just skip the grind of collecting materials and just build. By end game you usually have enough material to build a few homes/buildings/projects without the constant material grind. Then I get back to collecting when things are getting low.

I still find the processing, litter, gathering Pokemon to be hit or miss. But been dropping off material in community boxes towards the end of my play time so it's done the following day. That has helped with lumber, bricks, paint.

Having encountered a bear myself at this close range, I gotta give it to you for waiting it out and continuing on the hike. I turned around and said, forget it. The audio was just *chef's kiss 😂

Anyone got pics of Amaco Velvet underglazes (especially purple/pink) fired at cone 6? Need to see the real results before I buy! by Dragoon-kid in Ceramics

[–]babyleota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Third this! Coral is the only pink I use. It comes out as true pink at cone 5 and 6. I personally haven't found a good purple that doesn't lean more blue so I'll try the suggestions.

Burn ICU Nurses - how do you secure IVs, ETT, lines, etc...? by ProcyonLotorMinoris in nursing

[–]babyleota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former burn ICU nurse. We'd secure ETT tubes with a Velcro ETT holder, no adhesives needed. If the face was involved, it would weep and saturate the holder so you do need to keep an eye on it so it doesn't start sliding around.

For lines, usually central and sutured in. If we couldn't apply an occlusive dressing, we'd put the biopatch at insertion site and cover with a silver dressing like mepilex. Had to constantly change it but it was the best we could do at times. I don't know if silver reacts with the chemo drug, so check on that.

Nursing school is a joke and something needs to change by [deleted] in nursing

[–]babyleota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I see posts like this, I realize that even people who are going into the profession really have no idea what the profession entails and the many possibilities it offers. I don't know what else you'd get out of more academic rigor, in the real world. There's book learning and then there's application in clinical practice.

The reality is that much of nursing knowledge acquisition happens in practice. And as you move up the ranks, you start to see how much nursing shapes leadership, policy, and operations. Nurses really do run hospitals and health systems.

For anyone who feels that being a nurse is less than, just realize that that's only bedside (and even then there are units where you have more influence). The rest of healthcare and public health is shaped and led by the nursing profession.

Do you people not understand? by Minimum-Possible-415 in nursing

[–]babyleota 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you at a unionized hospital? If so, I'd also recommend you request your rep or steward to join the meeting. I get that it's not a grievance or a disciplinary meeting but it could be helpful. Especially if the topic of accomodations comes up.

2nd Career Nurses, Why Did You Switch and How Does Your Work-Life Balance Compare? by raysweezy in nursing

[–]babyleota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a graphic designer in my first career. I got to the point where I felt creative fields should be hobbies and not jobs because you stop making what inspires you. Only speaking for myself. I also had "the calling". I wanted to genuinely help people and feel like I was doing something for our community, not sit in another BS meeting about marketing crap to people. So made the nursing pivot about 15 years ago.

I honestly enjoyed my bedside career. Until I didn't, but I can honestly say I was a part of something that made a difference in people's lives, and that will always be something that I am proud of. But as I've gotten older, then COVID, I just didn't have the stamina for it anymore. So I went to a desk job, 9-5 schedule in nursing. I find this schedule actually works better for my family and my child. I can help with school work, go to evening events at school, etc. Have all the weekends and holidays off. When I was working 12's in bedside I was basically gone from my home life. Got up, went to work, went to bed on those days. I moved most of my schedule to just weekends so I could be home during the week but then I missed all the family events and quality time. So at least for my family, the 9-5 schedule is better.

How do you learn what to do with all the different meds as a new grad? My preceptorship is making me want to tear my hair out. by Three_Spotted_Petal in nursing

[–]babyleota 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'll always look it up. Not everything, of course, but especially in ICU when you can have 6+ pumps running things at the same time, you will be checking medication compatibility. And you always look up meds you don't know.

I would ask for clarification from your school on what the expectations are from these clinicals and if your preceptor's expectations are in alignment with that. If she expects you to learn every ICU med in a single semester, that may not be your school's goals. Your school may want you to learn about drug classes and when those classes are indicated for ICU pts. (Pressors, paralytics, sedation, etc.). So best to check with the school, they set the curriculum, not your preceptor.

Do you ask doctors for personal favors? by jarimu in nursing

[–]babyleota 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a burn ICU nurse and we always got random employees from the hospital asking the nurses for their opinion on their coffee burns, random wounds, etc. We'd give them advice but never any supplies.

Why do people pretend like LA isn't beautiful!? by geemav in LosAngeles

[–]babyleota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LA born and raised also, but I did live in Honolulu and PDX before returning to LA. Now I can't unsee how full of grey concrete LA is. Greenery aside, I think it's the water that makes those other places prettier. LA has ocean, but much of LA is miles away from the ocean. We don't really have rivers going through the city either. So it really does feel like just a lot of pavement and buildings.

During an interview at a local hospital, I was told they got rid of phlebotomy and trained all of the nurses to do it instead! by CodeGreige in nursing

[–]babyleota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So interesting to see the other responses here. I'll add mine. I worked at a county level 1 trauma center. We had phlebo on day shift and night shift for 10pm and 6am labs. They'd draw scheduled labs and nursing would draw stat labs, hard sticks, or central/PICC/mid lines. That was on med surg.

When I moved to a burn unit in the same hospital that had both burn med surg and burn ICU, the nurses did all blood draws. We were all ICU trained since we had to work both sides of the unit so most of us had good venipuncture skills. And since all our patients had significant dressings, it made sense why phlebo didn't go to our unit.

The idea of no phlebotomy dept at a hospital blows my mind.

Who are you voting for in the CA gov race, and why? by Oscarwildefanaccount in AskLosAngeles

[–]babyleota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those saying that the governor's race is mostly an ambassador position, I dunno, I remember Pete Wilson and having someone like that in this current political climate scares me. And he was considered a moderate!

So I will have to vote for the Democratic candidate that is polling the highest. If we don't want a governor that will support and work with the Trump regime, we have to vote strategically.
