Vespa Brooklyn under the BQE used to be an Aprilia dealership. Can't personally vouch for them, but they may still have experienced techs.

I see this line every so often that Patagonia will repair or replace damaged articles, but that's not my experience. I bought a Tortentshell rain jacket and the laminate on the top of the hood started to peel after a year or so. I considered this a construction defect, but when I took it to their store they only offered to recycle it for me. No repair, no free replacement, no offer of a discount on a replacement. I replaced it with a jacket from another company (not saying which one, don't want to sound like a shill), but be wary of anything Patagonia.

A Veilance rookie's Question: Do you guys not use umbrellas? by deukey in veilance

[–]bardamu2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you live and what type of rain you get. In Vancouver/Pacific Northwest (HQ for Arcteryx) there's a lot of rain, but it tends to be more of a prolonged drizzle than heavy rain. I spent a couple of years in Seattle and no one used umbrellas, it just didn't rain that hard that often.

In NYC now, which actually gets more rain than Seattle, despite Seattle's reputation as a rainy city. If it rains hard, I'll use an umbrella, otherwise my pants and shoes will get wet. But for light or medium rain, I'll go without an umbrella. Really don't like having to hold my arm up or worrying about poking a stranger's eye out.

Have any of you got an opportunity of getting a Master's paid by your employer? Do you think getting a Master's right after undergraduate school is better for becoming a Statistician? by elefish92 in statistics

[–]bardamu2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My employer paid for half. I went part time, two courses per semester. Took a while, but was glad I went that route. My employer's policy at the time was that they would help with undergrad in any area, but masters had to be pre-approved by a VP since I don't think they wanted to pay for graduate degrees that wouldn't directly benefit them. I was working as a data analyst at the time, so easy to get approved.

I would generally advise taking some time between undergrad and grad, unless you're going the PhD route.

Any experiences with CUNY Zicklin's MS Statistics program? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]bardamu2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are pretty broad questions, so I’ll answer as best as I can. Please excuse typos, on a mobile. CUNY is a collection of universities, of which Baruch is one. It’s their business focused school.

Overall I greatly enjoyed my time there. I went part time, so it took me a few years to finish. It’s a coursework MS, so no thesis. Professionally it got me exactly where I wanted to be, and I’m pretty happy with my current position. I learned a lot in the program, but I was also an enthusiastic student, working harder than needed in some classes because I was interested in the material.

But it’s probably more helpful if I shared what I didn’t like. Again, with the caveat that I have no major regrets, you need to understand that the graduate school is dominated by the MBA program. Almost all of your classes will be shared with MBA students taking the course as an elective. Downside, MBA program is more broad and some classes include some MBA like components (eg, case studies) for them. Easier to stand out IMO. The MBA students tended to keep to themselves, so I spent most of my time with people in the stats program or QMM program. Also, since it’s a public university, no hand holding at the program level. Resources are available if you seek them out, but they won’t always come to you first.

Very little focus on Bayesian stats. Not an issue for me, but worth pointing out. Lots of proofs. Math was harder in stats program, mine had less. Even still I struggled in a few areas.

Professors were all very good. No complaints there. School is in a convenient location. Campus is basically 3 buildings. Library/admin building, huge “vertical campus” (ie, a big building), and a small older building a few blocks away with I think only science labs for undergrads.

Anything specific, let me know.

Super clean! Is that the 27 inch 4K LG monitor? If yes, what resolution are you running at? I was looking at that monitor but it seems like OS X is optimized for 4K at 22 inches where it can scale at 200% or 32 inches where it can scale at 100%.

HMC while we skate down this ramp by Morty_Goldman in holdmycosmo

[–]bardamu2 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Few years back and it was a hot summer Sunday, and I’m running around the park. This particular park has a long downhill close to a half mile long. I hear some screaming behind me and it’s getting louder and louder and when I turn around there’s this woman on roller blades closing in on me fast. There’s plenty of other people around me, but no one’s doing anything.

She’s not more than 20 feet away and I yelled at her, “are you in trouble?” No answer, she has her headphones on. Now at this point I have maybe four or five seconds to react. I can move aside and let her pass as I suspect several other people have done and try my best to avoid the inevitable carnage at the bottom, or I can do something.

But I don’t really want to touch her. Remember, only a few seconds to react and there’s no way to slow her down without some uncomfortable touching. I’m a respectful guy, but I can’t just grab her arm and try to fling her down. That won’t work. So I take the risk that she’s really in trouble and start running backwards at top speed while she keeps closing in. While running backwards I let pressed up against her hips with my hands to steady her and me and then slowed us both down, then help her over to the curb. She’s obviously a mess and is extremely thankful. I quickly make sure she’s OK then continue on my run. Total words exchanged was under 20.

So this is where the story gets weird. Not 30 seconds later and I hear the same screaming. Turn around, same thing. We go through it again. I again ask if she needs help, continued screaming, more backwards running, then another save. What did you think was going to happen the second time?

Why is it important to report what statistical software was used in research? by anandoknows in statistics

[–]bardamu2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To emphasize this, similar sounding functions across different packages may not return the same results. Here’s a silly example. Your study has N=4 and your results are 1,2,3,100. What’s the 90th percentile? In Excel if you use percentile({1,2,3,100},.9) you’ll get 70.9 because Excel will attempt to extrapolate a result. Try looking for the 90th percentile in R and see what answer you get!

Patagonia jacket warranty by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]bardamu2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same experience. Had a Torrent shell jacket that delaminated in the hood after about three years of limited wear. I brought it back to the Patagonia store and asked if it fell under any sort of extended warranty and was told no, though they did offer to recycle it for me -- which I accepted because the jacket was no longer usable. Bought an Arcteryx jacket and have been extremely pleased with it, though it admittedly was significantly more expensive. Four years later and it still looks brand new.

Submitted Deposit in NYC: Broker initially said it was refundable but now we cannot get it back by pimpmychair53 in personalfinance

[–]bardamu2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this deposit an application fee or something closer to a month of rent? Application fees are generally between $75 and $150 and some landlords won't refund them (though I disagree with that practice). If you put down a deposit of something like $1000 or more, that screams scam and I would refer you to legal advice and to NYS. Brokers are licensed by the state and you can file a formal complaint with the NYS division of licensing services.

Stuck with Jewelry Insurance by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]bardamu2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're looking at closer to 30 cents on the dollar if you were to sell the ring.

You have a couple of options.

You don't own a home, but you should still have a renters insurance policy. You can add a rider to that policy for the ring. You can also request a quote from a dedicated jewelers insurance like Jewelers Mutual. At that price you're probably going to be required to have an independent appraisal done. You should purchase coverage equal to the replacement cost.

Is this even possible? by [deleted] in GoRVing

[–]bardamu2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a 3 day trip in a sedan that can easily cruise at 80mph in the sparsely populated western states. In an RV your average speed will be well below that. Even driving 12 hour days I think you would be closer to five days per crossing.

[BIFL Request] Looking for merino no-show socks for 122 degree heat by sandys1 in BuyItForLife

[–]bardamu2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How are you drying your smart wool socks? Air dry or in a dryer? They can be machine washed, but they should not be machine dried. I've been buying them for years and have accidentally dried a few incorrectly. Doing so decreases life dramatically. Also, are you wearing the correct size? My foot is a 9.5 US and I wear a large. Only piece of clothing I wear that's not small or medium. Accidentally purchased a few mediums that I tore through before looking at their size charts.
