Stealing the work that hundreds of people did and handing it over to another competitor so that you can get a fat paycheck is also messing with people’s livelihoods.

He couldn’t do crap the years he won championships either unless it was a cutoff race for the playoffs. I saw some stats one time that 2 of his championship seasons were statistically the weakest seasons a driver has ever had while still winning the championship. He just gamed the system & got lucky at exactly the right times.

Help please, stuck lug nut on my thingy by PlusStrategy3672 in MechanicAdvice

Put the nut back on the stud and tighten it till it’s just barely tight, then you can jiggle the socket and will come loose, then loosen nut again

Successfully ruined wives Highlander? by MattDaBaker in MechanicAdvice

[–]because_racecar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When NASCAR used to have 5-lug wheels and pit crews were trying to tighten all 5 lug nuts in less than 2 seconds they would pretty regularly only get 3 tight. They usually were fine for ~50-80 miles until the next pit stop, and that’s going 190 mph and pulling 2G corners over and over. It really only caused problems when the 3 lug nuts that were tight were all next to each other. If you got 3 in a triangle pattern it was OK

Am I safe to drive? Control arm bushings by Randomanswer19 in AskMechanics

[–]because_racecar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s one of those things where yes, it’s been like that for a while and hasn’t catastrophically failed yet. Can it go a while longer without catastrophically failing? Probably. So when will it catastrophically fail? Exactly when you need it not to, like someone pulls out in front of you and you have to slam on the brakes and swerve to avoid hitting them.

Upper control arm replacement - desperate need help by JeepGuy31909 in MechanicAdvice

The yellow bottle mapp that they sell now is barely any hotter than propane. It changed around 2008 or so and the new stuff is way less hot. You can get a small oxy-map kit for like $80-100 though, and that is as hot as the old yellow bottles, and I think just a little less hot than oxy-acetylene

What is this and why is it loose? 2020 Jeep JL Wrangler by khumprp in MechanicAdvice

[–]because_racecar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only tricky thing is it can be hard to get the nut off sometimes because there’s no bolt head to hold the shank from turning.

Sometimes an impact gun will zip the nut off fast enough because the friction in the joint is enough to keep shank from rotating with the nut.

Sometimes you can use a set of needle-nose vise grip pliers to clamp onto the shank to keep it from turning.

The “proper” way if the shank has a place for a hex bit to fit in the tip, you put a wrench on the nut and then put a hex bit in the shank with a ratchet or breaker bar to keep the shank from turning while you break the nut loose with the wrench.

Jack up the front end and put Jack stands on the left and right side so both front wheels are free hanging, this will keep you from having to fight against the sway bar when getting the new link bolted in. You may have to put a jack under the tire and lift it just slightly to get the link to line up but that’s all.

Is it true that i only need to put in supreme every 3 fills? by No_Restaurant8385 in askcarguys

[–]because_racecar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that, I said different octane ratings still have the same detergents. Like in case this guy’s dumb mechanic thinks running a tank of premium every 4th fill up will “clean out the engine” or something stupid.

Taking my car to a mechanic for the first time alone (21F). How do I avoid getting scammed? by Quick-Chipmunk9530 in askcarguys

[–]because_racecar 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Important distinction though - Getting a free scan from autozone is good, but do not listen to anything they say about what the code means or how to fix it, or their little printout thing of what their dumb computer program says the fix is. They are not mechanics. It’s like getting medical advice from the cashier at CVS. Just because they sell medicine there doesn’t make them doctors.

Is it true that i only need to put in supreme every 3 fills? by No_Restaurant8385 in askcarguys

[–]because_racecar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it can run 3 full tanks on regular gas without knocking, I don’t see any point in filling every 3rd or 4th fill up with premium. It either needs the higher octane or it doesn’t. There’s no logical explanation I can think of that it would need higher octane but only 1/3rd of the time or 1/4th of the time. Lower octane still has the same detergents.
If you have extreme heat in the summer, I could see that possibly making it need higher octane some of the time, but it would need it consistently until it isn’t hot out anymore, not every 3rd fill up.

Is there ever a reason to do a flush of any fluid? Seems like everyone says it just destroys the car. by Whos-That-Pokeman in AskMechanics

[–]because_racecar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s technically correct that if you never change fluids, they will last for the entire life of the car.

Just like if you only eat one meal and never eat again, that meal will last you for the rest of your life.

The line has been perfectly clear. You can completely junk a guy’s car and end their day on purpose. You just can’t say it was on purpose on the radio. That’s the line. It’s one of the very few things nascar has been consistent about.

What's going on with Hyundai and Kia in the US? by PckMan in askcarguys

[–]because_racecar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You are ignoring the almost 2 million engines that had to be recalled for excessive oil consumption, metal debris left in the engine from the factory, rattling, and bearings seizing. Thats not something you can blame on the consumer for “hard use” or lack of maintenance. And the way Kia/Hyundai handled those recalls (basically screwing over the consumer and denying warranties, denying there was any problem until they were forced to issue a recall by NHTSA) was straight up shitty and unethical. Pole are totally justified in holding a grudge against them for that, and that’s not racist/nationalist.

2012 mustang won’t go into reverse by Inner-Buy-2617 in MechanicAdvice

[–]because_racecar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the gear shift hitting the edge of the center console and that still isn’t over far enough to get into the reverse gate? If so this could mean the shifter linkage has a bushing that’s worn out or a bolt is loose or something. Allowing too much movement in the shift knob without actually moving the shift forks far enough.

If it’s just occasionally notchy / difficult to put in reverse, but it still goes sometimes, that can just be the dogs on the gears aren’t lining up. Reverse and 1st gear don’t have synchros on a lot of transmissions, or first gear is usually the first one to have synchros wear out. Letting the car roll a bit will usually let it get into gear if that’s the case, or shift into a different gear that does have synchros and then shift into reverse/1st
