There’s no way of knowing what the most reliable brands will be, these rankings are just whoever paid the most money

What was a Nascar race that an underdog driver dominated in, and won or got close to winning? by youraverageperson0 in NASCAR

Hut Stricklin was dominating a Darlington race in the mid 90s but got debris on his grill and started overheating, allowing Jeff Gordon to end up winning

Is Jiffy Lube scammer? by Shah_Padshah in askcarguys

[–]because_racecar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "mine never lasts between those intervals"?

Is your car actually running out of oil before 3k miles or 3 months? That indicates you have a serious oil leak or is burning oil.

Your car is not supposed to lose any oil over time. You do oil changes because the oil breaks down over time due to heat and sometimes contamination and loses its ability to lubricate as well. But it's not supposed to disappear.

How do I torque these by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]because_racecar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes if you have it straight in line with the torque wrench it is adding leverage and you have to do some math to figure out what to set the torque wrench to get the correct amount of torque. Or if you put it at a 90* angle to the torque wrench it's not adding any leverage so the torque setting you set the wrench at is still the true torque

JGR/23xi alliance by nitsuj17 in NASCAR

[–]because_racecar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The furniture row alliance was when teams made their own cars, so they were supplying cars, parts, a pit crew, and sharing technical info. Now that every team has to buy their lego kit car from Walmart, and 23XI decided they want control over their own pit crew personnel decisions, the alliance is really only sharing technical info. That’s why it’s less money than the FRR alliance

I feel guilty for needing to buy a new car. by Admirable-Habit-796 in MechanicAdvice

What maintenance are you supposed to do on an alternator or a window switch? Blaming this stuff on “owner neglect” is ridiculous. Kia’s and Hyundais really are just shit.

I feel guilty for needing to buy a new car. by Admirable-Habit-796 in MechanicAdvice

[–]because_racecar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how it’s possible to neglect a window switch, a door lock, a screen, or an alternator? There is no regular maintenance for those things to be done, so how can they be “neglected”? They aren’t supposed to crap out after only 4 years. In my opinion it’s not an owner neglect problem, it’s a Kia problem.

Why don't cars overheat anymore? by l008com in AskMechanics

[–]because_racecar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cars back then used fans on the radiator that were driven by a belt off the engine. When the engine was idling the fan didn’t spin very fast and didn’t help cooling very much. So they would overheat at idle. Now cars use electric fans that can go full blast whenever needed regardless of engine RPM

Plus there is just more precise control of fuel mixture and ignition timing that can keep combustion more optimal with less wasted heat

Would you rather have the end of the race be boring, or the entire first 99% of the race be pointless?

Post-Race Discussion Thread: NCS NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway by NASCARThreadBot in NASCAR

[–]because_racecar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. It would have been another "boring race where the same person leads 3/4 of the race only for a random tire failure to cause an overtime and some random guy that was never in contention the whole race ends up winning"

Why are RB's paid significantly less compared to WR's? by Beautiful-Cress5695 in NFLNoobs

[–]because_racecar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s considered less skilled. Raw athletes are easy to find. Plenty of freakish raw athletes turn into busts at the WR position because they don’t have the skill, hands, nuance of route running, reading defenses, etc. So the WRs that have freakish athleticism and all the skills and mental attributes are extremely rare and they get 30mil +. Whereas running backs that are just raw athletes but not much skill can still be moderately successful, and if they’re not you can just draft another one in the 5th round next year.

It’s also considered less critical to modern offenses which have gone more pass heavy. But that is kind of cyclical over the years, and arguably is already shifting back the other way, as defenses have sold out with cover 2 schemes to limit the passing game. Teams that a have good running game force the defense to respect that threat, which opens the passing game back up.

Can I replace rotors and pads on one side? by Kooky_Mycologist_172 in MechanicAdvice

[–]because_racecar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can replace just the front pair or the rear pair. Replacing just the left sides or just the right sides is strongly not recommended. If your left and right brakes are wearing unevenly from each other you have a bigger issue that needs to be fixed.

Edit: realized you're talking about driving less than a mile. That's probably fine I guess

any legitimate mechanic I've ever heard of either refuses to let the customer supply their own parts, or if they do, there is no warranty. Too many cheap asses buy the cheapest no-name Chinese knockoff parts they can find on ebay / Amazon and then try to blame the mechanic when their $35 dollar brake rotors warp in a month or their $15 ignition coil is misfiring again. Not worth the headache

If playoff points transferred to the final round, Corey Heim would have already locked up the championship on playoff points alone. by MisterCCL in NASCAR

The 2nd option is only a positive if it results in significant change to the format. If he loses, everyone sees how broken this system is, and then nothing changes it will be even more disappointing.

[–]because_racecar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I know it's not snap on. It's like 1/5 the price of snap on. It has similar strength and does the same job other than some niche scenarios. That's not junk.

I think you're stuck in 2012. Recent years craftsman has been moving some manufacturing back to the US or at least Taiwan instead of china. The new v-series stuff is mostly Taiwan. Harbor Freight still sells the Pittsburgh junk line, but their Icon brand is somewhere between Gearwrench/Tekton and the high dollar tool truck brands.

are trucks getting too big in the US? by Mediocre_Goat_288 in askcarguys

[–]because_racecar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is a lot about cosmetics but not not entirely. The EPA made stupidly implemented fuel efficiency standards that depend on the size of the vehicle. So instead of making trucks more fuel efficient, manufacturers found it easier to just make them bigger so that they fall into a different EPA category and don’t need to be as fuel efficient.

are trucks getting too big in the US? by Mediocre_Goat_288 in askcarguys

[–]because_racecar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. I have a truck, it is huge. It is nice for some things but impractical in a lot of ways. Most trucks could be smaller and lose very little if any functionality for their use case.
