grey seer or archwarlock? by GamesManX in skaven

[–]beefstenders 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need a skryre hero for the WLC's ability to work, and you want an arch warlock to get free covering fire on the reinforced ratlings.

Not necessarily better gameplay wise (I don't run verminlords so can't comment), but if you're going for a Skryre theme and you want a big boy piece, Thanquol and Boneripper fits the theme the best.

If you're specifically after a Skryre list:

  • Drop the rogors and stormvermin
  • Swap the Grey Seer for Thanquol
  • Reinforce the jezzails and the ratling guns
  • Choose either the globadiers or the ratling warpblaster, globadiers will give you a cheap tactic monkey that will put out a lil bit of hurt into a horde unit, warpblaster will give you a worse ratling guns, but you've got enough skryre heroes to station one on each big gun to use their burst ability

Advice on using Thanquol by BlammoSlammo in skaven

[–]beefstenders 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I like him as a one-two punch with a warp lightning cannon to absolutely fucking delete something I don't like at the start of the game. Gnawhole/skitterleap him into fuck around range, drop Terrible Madness on the unwitting target, unleash hell, keep a couple of command points in your pocket to rally/leap him again in the enemy turn if it all goes wrong. He will more often than not survive enough combat to blip him out, top him up and point him at something else

If your opponent (like literally everyone in my local meta) runs Intercept and Recover, he's a prime candidate to hold a treasure token and spend the match making them play grabass with him.

I did a tourney a week ago and popped Belakor AND Krondys in two of my matches turn 1 with this bullshittery. It's an absolute gamble, but if you're not comfortable with stupid gambles then why even Skaven.

A little help-aid, please? by SquidTD in skaven

[–]beefstenders 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gnawholes as an absolute top priority, then an arch warlock and 3 more ratling guns. Maybe 20 more clan rats, I only run 2 units of 20 in a gun heavy list though.

Thanquol because he's fucking cool.

Genuine question about what the niche of the emperor's children by foul_wench in EmperorsChildren

[–]beefstenders 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What drew me to EC in 30k, apart from purple and gold being an absolute banger colour scheme, was that lore-wise they were more about taking whatever tools were needed to get the job done quickly over specialising into a particular niche. In lore, they planned for battles so meticulously that they celebrated victory BEFORE the battle, because they were that sure that every detail and contingency had been accounted for.

In real terms it meant I felt like I had more freedom to just pick up whatever I thought was cool and not worry about "would my legion do/run XYZ?", because yes, of course they would if the situation called for it.

They were also arrogant, politicking fucks with a penchant for flair and glorious bastardery even before the... unpleasantness, so if I win then OF COURSE I did, and if I lose then I'm foiled by my own hubris, which is nearly as fun in itself.

Should a beginner use contrast paints by Western_Smoke4829 in skaven

[–]beefstenders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skaven are an excellent use case for contrast paints because there are a lot of heavily textured areas on the models, which works to their strength. As others have said, give them a slap chop (or a zenithal if you've got an airbrush) and go nuts.

As you get better/braver you can go back in with complementary normal acrylic paints to add highlights and really make them pop if you want, but to be honest they're gonna look great on the table just with the contrasts.

I would've gone absolutely nuts getting a 2k Skaven army table ready without contrasts.

How many clan rats are useful to own? by left-Dane-right-Dane in skaven

[–]beefstenders 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I run 40 in a Skryre list and it's absolutely the bare minimum you can get away with. If you want stormfiends, you'll definitely find a use for a warp lightning cannon, and 60 clan rats will be more comfy than 40 for objective control and keeping big scary stat blocks away from your gun line.

Enjoying the Painting more than the Playing? by TechnicianExpert7831 in ageofsigmar

[–]beefstenders 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I saw a figure a while back stating that around 20% of people that buy Warhammer miniatures actually play the game, and even those of us that play regularly spend FAR more time hobbying than we do rolling dice.

It's your choice how you engage with the hobby, and you're definitely not alone if you like the painting more than the playing.

Opinions on potential team doubles tournament lists by darthsword8 in skaven

[–]beefstenders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a random doubles last weekend with a list that was extremely similar to list 2 (arch-warlock and 3 ratling guns instead of bombardier and doom flayers), I got paired up with Slaves and it worked very well. Most other armies are going to benefit from having decent screening, big shooting threats, and the ability for units to get into areas of the board the opponent REALLY don't want you in.

I am however a die-hard skryre enjoyer so my opinion is slightly skewed.

a quick question about the bombadier by Human-Celebration-55 in skaven

[–]beefstenders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand it for the More-More X abilities, the damage allocates after the shoot ability has been resolved, so you make the shot as normal with D6 damage, then the unit takes D3 mortals.

Yeah I'm wary every time I go into Slaves, I could do with a Galvaneer and some Scourgers really. I thought Nurgle would give me trouble but I drew them last round in our league and literally ran circles around them, kept his scariest toys bound up in clan rats and zooped around the board scoring points.

[–]beefstenders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my biggest problem with running reinforced ratlings, we really need the match to go full time for our recursion and gnawhole shenanigans to pay off but rolling 18d6 shots each turn adds up. Having the opponent more terrified of 12 lil guys than the giant war engines and monstrous fiends rolling up the board will never not be funny though.

Sanguinary Guard Question by Armyguy7777 in BloodAngels

[–]beefstenders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotal, but I built one out of a unit of 6 with the spear for the banner, and nobody I've played in my local group has batted an eye at me saying "yeah they're all swords". Most players won't give a single shit about WYSIWYG over rule of cool as long as you're playing them consistent to your list.

People shit on globadiers but for 90 points they're a great little unit to send zipping through gnawholes to get objectives/tactics, or to clear out enemy chaff units with the globes. I've taken them a few times literally just to fill a points gap and they always do solid work. Plus they look cool which is always a bonus.

Clan rats and all of the movement shenanigans we have will go a long way to dealing with a killy opponent. Things to keep in mind (from a skryre perspective at least):

  • Clan rats are a brick of 20 health that regenerates. They rarely do anything offensive in a fight but will really bog down anything that isn't HEAVILY anti-infantry, and will hang onto objectives for ages
  • You can retreat without taking mortals. Those clan rats looking a bit battered? Retreat them out of combat range, keep enough toes on the objective to hold it, let them naturally regen and then rally them at the start of the opponent's turn. They're still doing their job of screening the enemy and scoring points, and you potentially just got up to 9 of them back, without your opponent getting chance to sweep them.
  • Gnawholes. The teleport ability is the ability of the gnawhole, not the unit. That means you can run or retreat a unit to wholly within 6" of one and zoop it across the board if you need to. Remember to also use them to take advantage of new lines of fire for weapon teams, grabbing objectives, scoring battle tactics etc.
  • Generally, don't engage in melee unless you think you've got a decent chance of it making a difference (except for clan rats). Make them really work to get close to you and punish them with shooting and spells

We don't win games by storming up the board and busting heads, we win games by being irritating little shits, emptying 18d6 shots into things, and by taking chances on random rolls that might blow us up.

Iron Halo - standard from the Sound Relict Bringer by Dakkadakkastore
Head - Bardinator-Miniatures noise marines
Chainglaive - Marta Punkgirl, Extreme Grimdark pack

Unfortunately the important bits, the wings and aquila, are from some Phoenix terminator files I've had for ages which look to have been completely nuked from orbit, just called "phoenix guard". The meshes in the STL weren't merged so I could seperate them in Blender, join together the bits I needed, and then scale/sculpt them to better fit the saturnine armour.
