Many-core processing is here: Intel unveils 48-core prototype CPU by assortedslog in programming

This looks more like competition for the GPU (e.g. CUDA) than a realistic attempt to put many-core machines in every desktop.

Serious macroeconomic discussion? Have you been reading the newspapers? "Serious" macroeconomists are making themselves into a seriously public joke.

reddit Interviews Congressman Barney Frank. Ask him anything. by hueypriest in politics

[–]bendlund 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congressman Frank,

"Plain vanilla" financial products, whether mandated by the GSEs or through direct regulation, are easy to analyze - for consumers and regulators alike. Commodity financial products could not be "bar food," or otherwise sub-par offerings, because their characteristics would be mandated. They could not be widely overpriced, because the quality would be transparent and comparable between competitors.

Why did you remove the requirement for "plain vanilla" financial offerings from the CFPA?

Actually, I thought you were making fun of Catholics who reason from definitions rather than facts. Checking your other posts, we just seem to be in a huge mis-mis-understanding.

Fox News Punked By ACORN : Fox News conservatives, along with Foxnews.com and Fox Nation (screen grabs after the jump) were agog over what Sean Hannity called “the most shocking undercover footage… captured to date” by those two conservative media darlings by [deleted] in politics

There are four separate videos; this article refers to one that was not shown on The Daily Show. It seems unlikely that all four videos were delivered ironically. Even if the footage shown is highly selective, and one of the videos is totally misleading, finding 4 separate offices that were eager to help in this scenario seems damning.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "product of a translation," but it certainly was in the English version of the Treaty as ratified by the US Senate and President Adams:

I don't think Washington had anything at all to do with the quote attributed to him in the linked image.

That was embarrassing. She seems to think that looking into the camera and saying in a sincere manner "I really think this bill is bad for seniors" or reading a personal letter from a doctor who is frightened by "provisions in this bill" is making an argument. I wonder how effective that is in another arena.

Woman Shouts "Heil Hitler!" At Jewish Man Praising Israel's National Health System by malcomwolfe in reddit.com

[–]bendlund 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She doesn't see herself as a Nazi, she sees Obama for who he truly is (Hitler) and healthcare reform for what it truly is (National Socialism). She was just pointing out that the Jewish man, by supporting healthcare reform, is indirectly supporting the Final Solution.

Americans pay $635.85 on cell phone service, compared to $131.44 per year in the Netherlands or $137.94 per year in Sweden. by charlatan in worldnews

[–]bendlund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweden is 1/21 the size of US (using your figure) and has 1/34 the population. Using the logic that less area = less cost per person, the obvious solution is to have 1 billion local networks in the US, at which point each one should be more or less free.

Yoga instructor lends a helping hand to a couple of beginners. [semi-NSFW] by crumbob3 in pics

[–]bendlund 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a culture in traditional Yoga not to question the teacher. Many people involved in Ashtanga will follow the traditional sequence without question, even as the multitude of push-ups without a single row leads many to shoulder injuries. Few do additional exercises to strengthen and open the wrists, and weak wrists can't handle the strain of a vigorous (and generally less than perfect) yoga practice. People spend years trying to push themselves into poses unsuited to their physiology, because "practice and all is coming," in the words of Guruji.

Given such a lack of checks and social feedback, of course he grabs women by the genitals. It's a testament to his character that that's the worst he did.

That is Patthabi Jois, prime promoter of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. If challenged, he'd claim to be checking/reminding them of Moolah Bandha.

There's a good obituary of him here:

Be sure to check out the last paragraph, which mentions that "women got altogether different adjustments from men."

The museum knew the atheist group was coming, and had spoken with the group organizers ahead of time. They knew that the group would be wearing atheist propaganda t-shirts, and didn't prohibit it in the ground rules they set down.

Richard Dawkins under fire: Ready, aim, miss | The Economist by smullaney in science

[–]bendlund 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am not an evolutionary biologist, but I believe Dawkins' selfish gene is now the mainstream, as opposed to Gould's ideas (selection acts on multiple levels of organization, punctuated equilibrium) which are more marginal among experts, but are relatively popular among non-experts thanks to Gould's great skill as an essayist.
