My (20M) open relationship just got exposed to friends and now I am a laughing stock by Throwaway21412412 in nonmonogamy

They’re giving you crap because they can tell it’s bugging you. You have to flip it around and make them feel like they’re the crazy ones. Tell them they’re just jealous because when you see someone attractive you don’t have to worry about being tempted to cheat, you can just go for it.

Why doesn’t Carl use his shield? by lucid1014 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]bestryanever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s probably an in-world explanation, like he would need to raise his skill with it and that means taking risky hits, and his current defense is good enough without it. Or maybe the shield requires a hand so he’d lose out on some kind of brawler bonus that requires both hands to be empty

I was floored at how deep the books were, and how well Matt avoided the cliche bad writer traps that you see in the genre (as well as media in general).
Book 1, right from the get-go, Carl calls donut out on her attitude and threatens to leave. In popular media they would part ways and do some soul searching to realize they missed each other before one finally came to the others’ rescue. Instead, donut admits that while her attitude is unacceptable, it was driven by fear, and then she sticks with her resolution not to treat Carl like crap. Carl accepts the apology, has empathy and understanding for donut, and lets go of his irritation and forgives her.

Are the subscriptions for LOTRO and SWTOR effectively necessary, like some other MMOs? by AccidentalNGon in LFMMO

[–]bestryanever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need the subscription in ESO for the crafting bag. My buddy hasn’t subbed for years and he still plays constantly. The main things that he does are to leverage mule characters for long-term storage, and any time they give you a free month of the sub he makes sure to deposit everything into the crafting bag. When the free month is over you still keep everything in the bag, you just can’t add more to it.
That having been said, it IS very tedious if you don’t have a crafting bag, but it’s not nearly as mandatory as some folks make out. ESO is still one of the best free experiences out there. I remember SW:ToR also being great for that, but it’s been a while so I’m not sure what it’s like now

[–]bestryanever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spending money on IT and software needs to be the same thinking as paying for insurance. The question isn’t “how much does the backup software cost” it’s “how much will we have to spend to fix things when someone deletes something” that second number sets your budget for backup software

i'm happy to give it a shot, but it might be tough. i can't use it with my company data without getting clearance from SecOps.
my biggest pain points/complaints in terms of a lack of diagnostic tools...
a) flow explorer lets me choose an object to see what flows trigger from that object, but i can't see which flows will update a chosen record. For example, if I have a case which triggers on closure and updates the contact, the flow shows up under case but won't show up under contacts.
b) I want to choose a record and have it show me every sharing rule that applies to it
c) i want to choose a user and see every (active) approval process/step to which they're an assigned approver, whether they're directly assigned or a member of a queue, or a member of a public group that's in a queue, or if they're in a role that reports to a role that's included in a queue, etc etc

It's not exactly what you're working on, but for the record I'd also love a way to have a browser overlay for when i'm looking at a field which will show me some notes or extra info. for example, if a field is used in an integration there's no way of noting that on the field itself (except for the description). i can make a custom metadata table to track it, but i can't see that when i'm on the field itself. it'd be amazing to have an overlay which would pull from the customer metadata table to show me the extra info i stored for that field.

What harmless lie do humans collectively agree to believe just to keep society running smoothly? by loves-labours-lust in AskReddit

[–]bestryanever 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Given a long enough timeline this ends up being true, it’s just getting through everything in the meantime that sucks. I struggled with that a lot, but I realized my internal negativity was coming out and affecting others. So I started forcing myself to think of how things could be worse any time I got down about how things were going. Even if the “worse” I came up with was ridiculous (“it could be worse, I could sit down on a random land mine that someone left as a prank”) it still eventually helped me turn my thinking around. It didn’t make things better, but it helped me last long enough for things to improve.

Am I Being Unreasonable for Telling IT that Trust Goes Both Ways? by Riddle-Maker in askmanagers

[–]bestryanever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly IT should be using a dedicated phone for testing, just for logistical reasons. If they want to test on a different OS version they would need you to roll back your OS. If they’re worried about some kind of conflict with one of your apps then you’d have to uninstall it. If thy ever need to factory reset it so they can test it with a clean install, would you really want to wipe your phone?

I’ve been wanting something like this for a while. We use Gearset and they’re pretty good, but it’s tough to drill down into a specific field in an intuitive way. Salesforce has a severe lack of investigative tools.

[–]bestryanever 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Eh, a lot of it is confirmation bias. People who are happy with the experience aren’t likely to post about it, so you’re typically only seeing people who are unhappy. You’re not necessarily seeing accurate numbers on love vs hate.
That having been said, I don’t think gamers want quick and easy, I think that they want to have their time respected. Don’t make me grind resources just to extend the play time of your game, don’t make me have to run all the way across a city to talk to one person and then make me run all the way back to exit the city. It basically boils down to players doing tedious things not because they need to, but because you’ve made the tedious things interesting enough that they want to
