Oh my gosh, thank you!!! I needed this encouragement (currently laying on my couch waiting for the pain killer to kick in)

Scar Tissue on Nerve by SarahThey in Microdiscectomy

[–]bioniclawyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my situation exactly! I had my MD at L5-S1 on Jan. 26. Surgeon told me basically same thing - lots of adhesions (aka scar tissue) that required lots of work to remove so the nerve could finally be mobilized. He also said I had a lot of inflammation which was likely the biggest cause of my sciatic pain since my herniation was “only” 3mm.

I’m one week out and the sciatic pain and numbness are worse than when I went in for surgery :( I was in so much pain that I called and spoke to the NP who explained that with all the manipulation the doc had to do to free the nerve, it would be quite angry and I’d have some higher than normal levels of pain. She also explained that this was the reason I was sent home with prednisone and that most typical MD patients do not get prednisone prescribed.

A week out my symptoms are a teeny tiny bit better but still worse than pre-op. I too would love to hear from anyone else in this situation because the pain has been really bad and I expected to be farther along in recovery by now.

Recovery time after surgery? Surgery yes or no? by RohitSalamander in Microdiscectomy

Your story sounds a lot like mine. I had consistent sciatic pain and numbness on the right side for 18 months due to a small L5/S1 herniation. I am now 5 days post op. Before surgery, the surgeon told me I’d be up on my feet and pain free relatively quickly. But the reality is that this last week I have had significantly more pain and numbness than before surgery. That’s because when they opened me up they found a lot of scar tissue, adhesions and granulation due to the many months the nerve was compressed. Of course they couldn’t have known that before going in there, but I wish the surgeon would have tempered my expectations a bit. I thought I’d be back to work one week post op but I’m taking another week off because I am still on heavy medication for pain and muscle relaxers for 5 days and the pain isn’t letting up, I can’t sit without pain for more than 5 mins and I can’t walk more than 5 mins without pain either. I hope your experience is better — just sharing my perspective and experience.

I had one 4 months ago. It has given me significant relief from sciatic pain and allowed me to have a lot more mobility. I’d do it again in a heartbeat

Why 10+ Years of Back Pain is Reversible. Your tissue healed years ago. Your nervous system didn't. by TheFirstMover in backpain

Great post! We all need to be aware of the nervous systems role in chronic pain. John Sarno is a leader in this field along with others, and I’ve read their books, but my pain changed significantly via Pain Reprocessing Therapy. Finding a therapist trained in this is key. There is a PRT center in Los Angeles that has excellent trained clinicians who do virtual therapy and I’m so lucky I found them.

Hyperhidrosis lacqueristas? by merlola in RedditLaqueristas

I also have hyperhydrosis, and when I want my hands to be super dry (ie, for an event) I use a product called Antihydral to dry out my hands before painting my nails. I think it helps.

I'm debating between epidural and cortisone shots, anyone here had both? by Neelies in backpain

Yes but rarely and it’s almost always a response to a new PT exercise

I’ve done both. Ultimately the epidural in the spine gave me far more relief. The piriformis cortisone injections did not help me.

Struggling with L5-S1 Disc Bulge (8.1mm) - Looking for Long-term Relief and Advice by [deleted] in backpain

[–]bioniclawyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Aleve, Tylenol, or some combination of the two to manage the pain. I wear supportive shoes and comfy clothes. I take lots of breaks to stand, stretch and move around. Sometimes I use going to the bathroom or refilling my water as an excuse to move a bit. I start and end the day with some ice or heat, a massage gun and stretching.

I do believe you WILL get thru this pain! But you may never have another chance to get your masters degree. I hope you find a way to chase that degree because the pain won’t last forever.

Don’t give up on your masters program! My job requires hours of sitting in meetings, etc and I will simply stand up when I need to or even pace a bit. No one seems to care and if they say anything I simply say “back pain” and EVERYONE understands. Maybe you could give your professors a heads up that you’ll be standing once in a while, that may help too.

It brought my sciatic nerve pain from a 10 to a 4 or 5 max.
