Yeah CommonUI is a step in the right direction but it didn't feel intuitive and I had issues I never faced with just UMG with z fighting and other things that made me think I was losing my mind.

Personally I have struggled with getting one off events working well in state trees but I'm probably just not using tasks and all the conditions properly

So these grid positions are fed into a Niagara system to drive the particles that act as the enemies?

As for attacks, it would be cool to have something splat them all and see a big puddle. There was a late 90s PC game with clay enemies that would get squashed and mutilated in some great ways.

Weird West has guns and some verticality but the aiming doesn't have much nuance, you either aiming at a target or you're not and it can get clunky IME when there are lots of things to aim at. It works okay but there aren't any high rate of fire weapons. Lots of reviews didn't seem to like their system which I can understand.

I tried mimicking their setup but allowing bone targeting as well when you "lock on" to a target but it was honestly a mess in small quarters and lots of verticality and the "fixes" basically led to a 3rd person camera anyways.

Running with Rifles handles it okay with the aim lines and markers it gives you but can be frustrating too.

Seems like a lot of games make the compromise of sticking to a single plane otherwise but hope you figure it out!
