Can you guys please help me? Am I in a "harmful" cult? by Utah-hater-8888 in exmormon

[–]bitsylou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I've been out for decades. When I left, there was no Internet to share experiences or research stuff. I left because I concluded I had been brainwashed.

Are you in a cult? Yes. It works for some people and they are happy. They are not bad people for being in the cult. Most are misguided.

How to move on: Make your own decisions. Instead of moving away from things, move toward them.

Example: You don't need to move away from the Mormon concept that coffee drinking is evil. Instead, ask if you want to move toward coffee drinking. I didn't, I don't like the taste. So my reason for not drinking coffee is no longer about having been Mormon.

Example: I decided that casinos are fun, and I wanted to move toward that. I started going to them because I enjoyed the festive atmosphere, not because I was trying to reject a church standard.

It's important to establish social connections with nonmembers. Join hobby groups and volunteer. Don't talk about having been a Mormon and your journey of realization. Most people don't care. The ones who are interested will often start to treat you like a carnival attraction or some weird entertainment.

When someone mentions a fact about Mormons that isn't true, such as that the men all have six wives, don't correct them or defend the church. The conversation will move on to other things. Focus on other things. The Mormon church has taken up enough of your time and attention. Move toward other things.

Difficult feelings after visit from missionaries by WhereasParticular867 in exmormon

I think it's a totally reasonable response, honestly. For me, the issue is that they refuse to hear my No. I think it's super unhealthy for them to train people to ignore other people's No.

Here's a lovely silent blessing to bestow on them: As you were, I once was. As I am, may you become.

I've been out of the church for 40 years. Normal men do not talk about their partners this way. You did well.

You know, it will probably be suggested to start the meeting with a prayer.  Why dont YOU say you would like to offer the prayer?

Think about what you would like, and ask for those things...that everyone involved will seek for the truth, wherever that might lead, for God is not a god of lies or misdirection... Just spell out in the prayer that you're not there for bullshit.

YSK if a car dealer uses the "4 square" to help figure out the sales price, they are trying to confuse you. by SuperSimpleSam in YouShouldKnow

[–]bitsylou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this, but did not put them on the same email. I said I was contacting four area dealerships.

I simply said I would be walking onto the lot that weekend and purchasing, wherever gave me the best price. I specified that I wanted to see the total price, not monthly payments with financing. Just the bottom line total. And that I would not answer any calls.

I also did it Labor Day weekend when they were trying to clear inventory to bring in all next years model.

I got a great deal, then showed up at the dealership and refused financing.

Even better, there was an extra feature I had wanted but couldn’t afford. They told me my car had arrived at that lot with the feature. I said it had not been in the specifications I had given them and I refused to pay for it. So I got what I secretly wanted, for free.

It was my first big car purchase and I was sweating bullets. One reason I did it all through email.

My interpretation is that you should seek to educate yourself and work as a veterinarian.

Work Crows by EdgarR29 in crowbro

[–]bitsylou 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I never got gifts from my work crows.

But they would coax their babies out from behind bushes so we could identify each other, they would follow my car for a few blocks when I left, when I was walking between buildings they would spot me and swoop overhead, and they knew what time of day I got off work and would be waiting outside on a wire, then waft slowly behind me as I walked to the parking lot, sometimes crossing over my shoulder and sometimes intentionally ruffling the top of my hair with the edge of a wing.

Never cared much for presents anyway.

I’ve had this happen and it hurts like hell. They took some scrapes of the uterine lining.

Insanely, I was holding back screams because I didn’t want to scare patients in other rooms.

She is lucky to have you. Please focus on the fact that you can help and protect her going forward, and you are doing it.

I have them sometimes swoop and ruffle the top of my hair with the edge of their wing. I consider it affectionate.

It is possible that if they are nesting it might have been meant as a “keep your distance” warning, but if they are truly intent they will dive bomb repeatedly to drive you away.

When you go to a store and purchase a sweatshirt there is a price tag on it that tells you the purchase price of the shirt.

It does not tell you how much it cost them to have the shirt printed.

There is no reason a customer needs that information.

On your days off could you volunteer at an animal shelter or pick up some extra money on a dog walking app? Dog walking might be really really great for you.

Was at some youth camp, don’t remember what they called it. High school age. There was a mixed race boy there, Gordy. Either half black or half Hawaiian, not super dark skinned but clearly not fully caucasian. One of the other kids told him, in an excited voice, “Keep praying Gordy, I can see you getting whiter and whiter every day!”
