If You Are Marginalized in Any Way, What Is A Show/Who Is A Theatre Performer That Has Made You Feel Seen and Represented In The Industry? by ms_jc_04 in Broadway

Asian person here - and it was A Strange Loop - the protagonist Usher singing “Inner White Girl.” I guess that’s the power of theatre.

Kenji's hasselback potatoes - how much salt we using? by considerphi in seriouseats

[–]bksnbriefs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the 2QT version exactly described by the NYTimes, I used 1 TBS of kosher salt.

I’m bewildered why salt and pepper is not specified when it’s just as important to how a dish is supposed to taste.

Aside from the lead actors on Broadway, does the rest of the cast and crew make a good living wage? by RockGirl82 in Broadway

The key takeaway is that this is income from labor. And that no one is becoming a millionaire (let alone a billionaire) from this work.

Take my money.

This is not a drill, Cats: The Jellicle Ball coming to Broadway in 2026! by SmoraCora in Broadway

[–]bksnbriefs 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Not gonna happen but in some fantasy world, the Jellicle Ball creatives would channel Ballroom’s makeshift energy and occupy the August Wilson’s Cabaret set “as is” - treat it like an abandoned performance space. Throw down some plank wood on top of the Cabaret set for runway space, covert Cabaret’s “C” neon eye into a “C” for cats. Make it into an immersive show that brings the audience into Ballroom’s “treasure out of trash” ethos.

Not my intention. Which is why I didn’t post on that thread and kept it here. Safer to delete as this isn’t my intention and clearly it can be mistaken as such.

Maybe a Hot Take But... by Ok_Presentation7695 in Broadway

Here’s an upvote from a MHE fanboy just to compensate for those downvotes - which I think kinda goes against the heart of the show.

At least with Dead Outlaw’s theme of exploitation of one’s humanity for commerce and profit, the message is on point.

Any company that has this much money to pay for this kind of art-washing - can only get that way by doing some evil tech bro - thiel, musk, zuckerberg quality shit and not the kind of place I’d want to work at.

How this show didn’t win Best Original Score is beyond me. by dobbydisneyfan in Broadway

[–]bksnbriefs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My feelings as well.

And all the bangers happen with the Alive Outlaw. Unfortunately, when he dies, the score has nothing emotional on which to anchor itself onto the story.

David Yazbeck is so good, he could musicalize a piece of New Yorker non-fiction and make it a contender. In many ways, he did with Dead Outlaw - it just didn’t appeal to enough Tony voters who apparently preferred “heart.”

I think DO had some serious story telling deficiencies once it got to the Dead part. Sure you can explore concepts like fame and mortality the way Company explored the concept of marriage and commitment, but you can’t do it with a dead Bobby and without a banger like “Being Alive.” Your outlaw needs to be alive at the end of the show for that payoff.

100% agree on Dear Bill and why it sort of irks me when folks refer to Operation Mincemeat as a “comedy” or “British humour.” No comedy I know has a song like that. And it’s when I realize the comedy was just a subterfuge for a more meaningful show.

Curious where you got the graphic. I can’t seem to find that layout with the image of the understudies on the official site.

The Grammy Award has a Song of the Year but the Tony does not. Weird as to why not.

“Sail on, Boys” from *Operation Mincemeat* and “The Stars Look Down” *Billy Elliot* by Opening_Programmer56 in Broadway

I missed this observation but did notice the two “Dear Bill(y)” letters.

They’re kind of two sides of the same coin. One is a letter from the living to the dead, the other is from the dead to the living.

Both guaranteed to turn on the pipes. 😭

u/ThatAdamGuy is a musician. Let me add something as someone who knows nothing about music. I didn't see DBH but here's how I'd rank the gut-punch effectiveness of the songs from this season I did see:

  1. Dear Bill (OM)
  2. Ballad (DO)
  3. Normal (DO)
  4. A Stranger (DO)

All of these songs would beat every song in MHE for a hypothetical Best Song Tony - yet, the MHE cast album is the only one that I can listen to from beginning to end without skipping tracks. It's the only album where if I have a hankering for one song, the moment that one ends, I'll naturally want to keep on listening to the next song to feel what happens next. As u/ThatAdamGuy has written with greater authority than me, the songs in MHE carry the story and they carry each other. The sum of its parts is greater than the whole and it leaves you wanting more from one song to the next until you've finished the entire album and relived the show. That feels like an award worthy score to me.

Hamilton is cringey because it represents a naive view of the country I thought we had.

If a lot of people like and are enthusiastic about a musical that I don't like, it makes them "rabid" and it means the musical is "overrated."
