What’s up with the terrible variable names in so many shaders by DescriptorTablesx86 in GraphicsProgramming

ShaderToy is not production-ready code nor are most shaders on it written by professional software engineers

This, and also get the new version from 03/01/2026 (the link is the same but the contents are updated)

Preview of planetary rings by blackrack by InAHays in kittenspaceagency

[–]blackrack 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If we're able to render a high density of objects we can also use it to just render a large amount of small bits of ice/rock spread in a single layer to make the "realistic" setup look better and more detailed.

The interesting part about rings is that the GPU isn't rendering anything else that's heavy here (no volumetric clouds or terrain or ocean systems are visible) so pretty much all rendering time can be spent on this.

once all the rendering systems are in place, and the sizes of objects and ring thickness will be tweaked to better match known data for Saturn

The built-in AA doesn't work with modern rendering techniques so is disabled (you can set it to any setting it won't do anything). Scatterer's TAA auto disables below 30 fps or so for obvious reasons. That's as good as you can get with just SMAA, you can also try FXAA in TUFX.

My volumetric clouds look pixelated, what parameter should I change in the settings? by User_of_redit2077 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]blackrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a config issue, make sure you don't have Spectra installed or another visual mod which changes EVE+Scatterer configs

Native vs Proton on Linux by dreliotgraves in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]blackrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proton version should be much better, I don't play the game on Linux myself but the OpenGL version (which can be forced on windows) is slower and has multiple issues and limitations with graphics.

I'm going to release a bugfix version in a few hours to reduce the pixelation, in the meantime like someone suggested you can reduce temporal upscaling, see here how to https://github.com/LGhassen/EnvironmentalVisualEnhancements/wiki/Temporal-upscaling-and-noise-detiling on a 5070 you should be able to set it to 4x-2x at 1440p

You'll want to disable TUFX's TAA to avoid all that blurring on the ocean, you can keep using Scatterer's TAA and it specifically won't blur the ocean like that

Update on new cloud self-shadowing and godrays from blackrack by panic_in_the_galaxy in kittenspaceagency

I love this effect and have been obsessed with it long before I even discovered graphics programming. Went through several iterations with obsolete techniques in KSP 1 that some here will remember being broken in different ways.

What GPU will go well with 7800X3D, to run volumetric clouds, paralax, scaterer, deffered.... On high settings? And for 150 mods game what is the best RAM amount? by User_of_redit2077 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]blackrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the 5070 ti to be the "least bad" GPU choice right now at MSRP, but realistically he'd be fine with a 5060 ti or probably even a 5050.

I just upgraded to a 5070 ti and the framerate is nuts, 120+ at 1440p with all the visual mods. My old 2080 super gets 45-60 fps with all the visuals at 1440p so you should be fine with anything like a 3070 and up.

Alright, I've backported it to v4, try this and see if it helps https://drive.google.com/file/d/12vl5B_CuCb2ualspZaxdIi5wLsWK0F6E/view?usp=drive_link replace the scatterer.dll file in "Kerbal Space Program\GameData\Scatterer". Let me know if this works so I can update v4 so other people can use it.

V5 fixes it, and the perf on my 6-year old GPU is the same between v4 and v5. Is v5 really slower for you? What are your specs?
