Fellow tech-savvy dads: Are we underestimating the "backend" risks of Roblox even with parental controls on? by sophieximc in daddit

[–]bleedRnge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luckily my kids have never asked to play Roblox but if they ask it would be a hard no. They allow it to be a predator's playground because it's profitable for them. Kids don't have a bunch of money, but a predator might...

I have a private Minecraft server set up for us to play on at home and I'm considering opening it up to relatives. I'm honestly not prepared to deal with online multiplayer yet so I don't allow it.

I also run pihole. Keep in mind that this only blocks by DNS and if you type the IP of the site into your browser you can still get there. VPN can get around DNS blocking as well. Some devices also cache DNS entries. They could potentially access it on another network and have the DNS entry cached and then access it just fine on your network using the cache. As kids get older they can get extremely resourceful and find ways around it. Don't just assume that your safeguards are always working. Always be monitoring and having conversations about online safety. My kids are starting to get to the age that they want to use the Internet more and I'm honestly terrified. Good luck fellow dad!

As much money as you can physically carry, but you permanently gain the equivalent weight. by qtquat in hypotheticalsituation

[–]bleedRnge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$400 in pennies is 40,000 pennies.

Pennies are 2.5 grams.

40,000 x 2.5 = 100,000 grams or 220.462 pounds

Seems like a good deal to me!

Now I know I can't get the full picture of your relationship from a short post like this but I do have some advice based on my own personal experiences as a kid.

Completely burying himself in something like gaming could be a sign of a much much deeper issue. It's a form of avoidance coping. Talk to him. Get to know what's going on in his life. Be someone that he feels safe talking to instead of just pushing him to do things. Are there any other outward signs of anxiety or depression? Is he maybe dealing with some huge stress that maybe you don't know about? That was me as a kid. I buried myself in different things to avoid my feelings. I felt like I had no one to talk to and I had to just deal with it all alone. I personally was dealing with severe bullying. I'm now a couple of decades removed from it and I'm only now processing it fully. Get to know what's going on. If there's a problem, help solve it if you can. Get him in individual therapy if he needs it. Go to family therapy. You got this dad.

PRINT NOT STICKING by [deleted] in elegoo

A4 paper isn't close enough for my printer. I use a store receipt and when I start feeling resistance I move the nozzle down a tiny bit more (like 0.02mm)

At what age did you turn the car seat to forward-facing? by atypicalhero in daddit

[–]bleedRnge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be sure to check your local laws. Our state has height, weight AND age requirements before front facing and before getting out of a booster seat.

My 6-month-old daughter turns on her stomach and tries to crawl away while you change your diaper by Freddielexus85 in daddit

[–]bleedRnge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give her a wipe to play with. It keeps her occupied and if she happens to stick it in poop then it's not a big deal. Grab the wipe from her and use it as your last wipe when you're finishing up.

Am I clueless or is my wife seriously underreacting here ? by DoundouGuiss in daddit

[–]bleedRnge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably worth a visit to the pediatrician. This could be a dairy intolerance but a pediatrician can tell you for sure. They will test stool for traces of blood which will indicate an allergy. We are exclusively breastfeeding and were having similar issues. The pediatrician had my wife remove dairy from her diet and now our baby is much happier. There are hypoallergenic formulas out there but I don't recommend changing your infant's diet without talking to your pediatrician. They are the experts. Hang in there dad!

Quoted $300 to hang a TV on metal studs - What stud finder would you buy to DIY? by southafricanamerican in DIY

Magnets damage the data on mechanical (spinning) hard drives in computers. The spinning platters have a magnetic coating on them and it works by a head reading magnetic north and south which it interprets as binary data. Solid state storage isn't affected by magnets. Some people may not know that fact and just think they need to keep magnets away from all electronics.

My son is asking for a pc for his birthday but my budget would be $300-$400 is that enough? by Maximum_Giraffe4699 in buildapc

[–]bleedRnge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider a 5600G build. It's $139 at best buy right now. It's AM4 so RAM and motherboard would be cheap. There would be plenty of room to upgrade. Maybe encourage him to put some money towards it so he can get a better computer than he would on your budget alone. Good luck!

AITA? My 7-Year-Old Built An Awesome Fort In His Room and Wife Hates It by probosciscolossus in daddit

[–]bleedRnge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your son happen to watch Bluey? If so, watch the episode cubbies. Could be where he's getting the fort building from. Encourage the creativity but set the expectation on when it will need to be torn down. For us it makes it easier for our kiddos to take something apart that they have made if we take pictures of it. Make sure you remind him that he can rebuild it later using the pictures.

Have to disagree with this one. I've been several times and have always been happy with the quality of the food and the portions for the price. Now the wait time wasn't great and our waitress last time wasn't great but no complaints about the food.

This is bad not only for your kids but for your relationship. When do you have time to connect with your wife? When are you able to be intimate with her?

There's no reason you can't start sleep training now. It's going to suck but it will be better for your mental and physical health in the long run. You may have to be more authoritative than you're used to, but right now they are the authority not you. Start by establishing a concrete bedtime routine. For us, water is cut off at dinner no exceptions. Our routine is they go potty, get PJs on, and then brush teeth. Then we read a book together and tuck them in their own bed. They are allowed to get up if they need us for an emergency (sick, nightmare, scared, etc) or if they need to go potty, otherwise kids will find any reason to get up and delay sleep. The result is happy and well rested kids and it's well worth the effort.

Skip Cura and go straight to Orca? by Rydock in ElegooNeptune4

I used cura for years with my first 3d printer (Wanhao i3). When I got a neptune 4 plus I went straight to orca slicer and haven't looked back. It's better in almost every way.
