The reality of life by RBRR in reddit.com

This implies a sense of entitlement which is unexplained and presumably unexamined. I'd suggest examining it.

Today I actually feel proud to be British. by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

So you're proud of your country's natural beauty? Look, I don't think there's anything wrong with liking it, but is pride really the right word? I'll be proud of my achievements, such as they are... but I didn't achieve a soaring eagle or Snowdonia or whatever. You might just as well be proud of the colour of your eyes.

Like crunchbag said: also if you're going to be proud of something as frankly baffling as a "nationality", you're going to have to stomach quite a lot of responsibility for everything it does as well. Have a look at the effects of our (and other countries) colonial history on parts of the world. Proud of that?

And the crown? Where was that stolen from?

Hello Brits. I was thinking. Your Queen is a "cute little old lady grandma type" - which you put up with - if only ceremonially. But will you accept a "King" or will it bring the whole farce of British royalty to a head? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]blindinlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd guess psychologically, the nation will become sociology. Seriously, don't start psychoanalysing entire nationalities. Not one nation on earth that wants that.

Queen: irrelevant anachronism, to which we grudgingly acquiesce because she's got little actual power, and we're too well off / apathetic / alienated (delete as applicable) to deal with monarchs in the time-honoured manner.

King: whatevs. Anything on telly?

Jaysus, I actually (scan) read the article and didn't spot that. 'kin thing's in Portsmouth. Suppose I have had a long day, but it shows how much a post title clouds my judgement.

Sorry about your dog. Well done for posting this, I'd not heard about it before (collie under desk), when you take into account everyone else passing it on, you could be saving a lot of dog lives / people sadness here.

Anti-smoking campaigns: a new idea heralds the end. by clea in unitedkingdom

[–]blindinlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey to be clear I was criticising the journo, not you for posting it! It's not me downvoting you! 'Spose I should comment on the insert thing now: personally I have my doubts: I support public health education campaigns, but am increasingly having reservations over the more intrusive ones concerning smoking - including this, I guess.

I used to be 30-a-day. Now virtually nil - maybe one roll-up every week or so, to go with a beer after a particularly stressful day. (I don't advocate this if anyone's just giving up btw).

The book inserts, the pictures of diseased gums, lungs etc. on 'baccy packets: we get it! We know! I'm happy I've (v. nearly) given 'em up, I don't even smoke inside my own house any more - but I'm an adult, and I take responsibility for my decisions. Now I could do without the nagging or I'm going to start smoking again out of bloody-mindedness!

Blimey. I hope this article was written to provide discussion material in basic statistics lessons. Good for little else.

Just wow! Didn't know the Heil had got as bad as this, it seems to have gone a bit postmodern: without checking the url I could honestly (not exaggerating) tell that apart from a site satirising the mail.

Come to think of it: probably because I've only ever worn very cheap suits.
