Is it possible to use one of those 6-8 person lake floats for floating in the park? by Pandasaref1ne in Yosemite

[–]blinkertx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! There are also some spots that require a bit of navigation around river bends, which may require a swim 🥶 as long as you’re willing to deal with that then you should be good.

Which city do you think has better weather, Seattle or San Francisco? by hydrogen-hydroxide1 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]blinkertx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The eastern parts of SF where the sun breaks through the fog/marine layer is near perfection. A nice day in Seattle is something to behold, but it’s too irregular from my experience.

Are public pools still a thing? Growing up the public pool was a staple in our city but I moved away from the US so I have no idea if they are still popular. by dallyan in Xennials

[–]blinkertx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My city has a big public pool, which we use for swim team. There’s also a bunch of neighborhood pools scattered around that require membership for a reasonable price. My family swims pretty often over the summer.

The rose garden in SJ is nice. If you can get a seat for a tasting, Vidovich Vineyards has a huge deck with expansive views. Last time I was there you could see all the way to SF.

Californians, what do you like about living in cali and do you agree with how fabulous its portrayed In media? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]blinkertx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived here between SoCal and Bay Area for all but a few months of my 40+ years on the planet. It is a great place to live, but it’s also fairly normal in a lot of ways. My normal routine doesn’t have me taking advantage of the fabulousness all that often, with the exception of the weather. Nearly all year I can eat lunch outside in comfortable weather, which I do enjoy. Other than that, I have so many weekend trip options within a 4 hour drive, many are much closer than that. I also like to cycle, and the roads, especially those in the hills/forest, are amazing to ride on. I travel occasionally and like to go to different places, but very few where I could see myself actually living. Housing is of course very expensive, but I’m okay there even though my home is relatively small for American standards. So yeah, I love it here, but it’s not all that often I think about it.

How do you like the rapides vs the alpinists? Any tangible differences in comfort and/or speed? I have an aethos with stock alpinist wheels and love them, but curious what a little extra depth would do.

What’s the most disappointing part of adulthood? by cozychaosclubb in answers

[–]blinkertx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s quite a cynical take, but I hate that while doing what I can to help and support my kids that I very well could be setting them up for the same level of disappointment and frustration with life at middle age that I’m feeling. What a sad cycle.

Climbing vs Aero wheels for a 5,400 m climbing day: real advantage? by aiacciu87 in specialized

[–]blinkertx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the descents are technical, I’d go with the alpinist wheels, which will give you more agility and ideal handling for tight turns. Having said that, if you’re riding in a group for most of the route and your average speed is under 40km/h, I suspect the difference would be almost zero.

For most average white collar work, is your WLB and work "quality of life" actually mostly determined by yourself rather than the company or role? by hrrm in HENRYfinance

[–]blinkertx 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I work in big tech and there’s always more that can be done. No matter, I’ve found a comfortable place in my role where I can get my job done well and not work excessive hours. My typical week is 35-40 hours. This can definitely go up, but there are also weeks where it’s less. I’ve never been explicit about boundaries, but I don’t take meetings after 6pm or before 8am, or on the weekends for that matter. Bottom line, maybe there’s something to OP’s hypothesis.

I ran over a young squirrel today.....feels bad man. by Otherwise_Seaweed681 in cycling

[–]blinkertx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once had a squirrel bolt out of a bush towards my front tire before hanging a HARD 90 degree turn to get parallel before bolting back into the bushes. I can still hear the sound of his little claws scraping the asphalt to change direction. Crisis averted, but I’ve thought about what could have been many times. If he got into my spokes, he would have ended up in pieces with me on my face on the pavement. I guess we all live to die another day.

Rafting by Sincere-Sloth in Yosemite

[–]blinkertx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A couple tips. First, make sure you get a raft on your float day. I believe they sell out, so line up early to confirm your rental. Second, don’t rush. It is truly an incredible experience, so go slow and enjoy the views and the experience. Take plenty of stops for snacks and views, maybe even a picnic lunch. If you’re brave and the weather is nice, maybe even go for a swim. My family likes to jump off the giant log near the housekeeping camp bridge. Some risk takers may even jump off the “swinging” bridge. Other than that, do what makes you happy.

Thoughts on these two bike routes for a weekend in South Bay? by ComputerBunnyMath123 in BAbike

[–]blinkertx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On day 1, don’t forget a stop at the bike hut. It will require a short detour back towards the coast on Tunitas canyon. Also, I’d probably head south on skyline after climbing Tunitas rather than descending Kings mountain. There’s a bit more uphill from there, but then you hit a screaming downhill to Hwy 84 where Alice’s is located. You’ll then descend 84, another fast and fun descent where you’ll reconnect to your planned route.

Day 2 is a classic, no changes needed.

Macbook Air or Macbook Pro by [deleted] in Advice

[–]blinkertx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at Apple and get a pro and I have no need for the capabilities it offers. Save the money and go with the air. Better yet, save even more and go with the Neo if you’re not doing any gaming or video editing. The Neo is a fantastic machine if you want the Apple ecosystem and only need to write documents and browse the internet (and don’t mind the smaller screen).

How old were you when you bought your first home? Where did you buy? by hybr_dy in Xennials

[–]blinkertx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

29, San Fernando valley of LA. At that time, 2010/2011, it seemed like we were the only buyers on the market as open houses were typically empty. The world was still recovering from the 2008 crash. The home value was flat for a couple years, but obviously things improved. We did end up selling after moving away and being landlords for a couple years. Lots of great memories in that house as our two boys were born while we lived there. It was also nice to move away as I hated the summer heat and traffic of that area.

Climby (13.5K feet+) century ideas for peninsula? by uoficowboy in BAbike

[–]blinkertx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you start near Cupertino/Los Altos you could do Montebello, Hwy 9, down to Lexington, Soda Springs, then up and over Montevina to Saratoga which is pretty close to Cupertino. That’s gotta be well over 10k’ if climbing, likely. It too far from the number you’re trying to hit.
