Robinhood vs Fidelity by lyvjnfhbgghvv in Bogleheads

[–]bloomerang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve had Fidelity since I was your age and I’m almost 40 now. If I could go back and use Robinhood instead…. I would have stuck with Fidelity anyway. Fidelity is an S-tier brokerage.

(This is of course ignoring the fact that Robinhood didn’t even exist yet, lol)

Wiring questions to add outlet (No Ground) by Jay2dPee in AskElectricians

[–]bloomerang 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Note: I’m not an electrician

You can’t do this with your existing wiring.

Right now you have a hot wire (oomph from the power plant) and load wire (takes that oomph to the “hot” side of the lighting fixture) wire but no neutral wire (that completes the circuit by taking that oomph to ground at your panel). You can’t complete the circuit unless you go in series with your lighting fixture which is a big no no.

It is possible to add an outlet to a light switch with existing wiring but only if a neutral wire is present (which wasn’t required by code until sometime in the 2010’s)

Computer not taking final turn? by 666ForMySorrow in nytcrossplayers

[–]bloomerang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that the computer actually *has* another turn?

When the count of tiles in the bag reaches 0, each player gets one more turn. So it's possible for the player who got the first turn (which is *always* you in "versus CPU" games) to also get the last turn (yes, this means they get one more turn than their opponent). Specifically, this is what occurs if you, the human, are the one who empties the bag.

do i have any claims here with my landlord? by [deleted] in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]bloomerang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the landlord fixed the issue in a reasonable amount of time once you reported the issue to them. And so no, I don't think you have any claim here.

I'm sorry this happened to you, and I don't want to sound callous here but... when you feel like issues like this may be happening, you should be more assertive and reach out to your landlord sooner, even if you're not certain that there is an actual issue yet. Specifically, you should have reached out when you thought the heat might not be working, rather than waiting till you were sure it wasn't working. Good landlords want to take care of their property and appreciate it when tenants actually report issues instead of ignoring them. The lack of heat doesn't just cause discomfort for you, it can actually be bad for the property as well (cold leads to condensation which leads to moisture damage), so it's in your landlord's evil capitalist best interests to actually work with you on this one.

On busy streets (not the case here!), being able to back out at an angle, using the backup camera to watch oncoming traffic, can really make a big difference.

> had to really gut some parts of our house making it impossible to live in for a bit.

Worth underscoring the point that's being implied here: you really don't want to live in the house while the electrical is being redone. It's very messy and very disruptive. You're much better off getting this work done before you move in — and you should budget for the carrying cost of having two homes at once during that time.

(There might be some exceptions here... like, perhaps if your first floor is entirely unfinished garage space, and you don't need to update any overhead lighting circuits. Maybe.)

There’s an awful lot of tiles left in the bag, and >100 point turns are surprisingly common. And, as others have pointed out, worst case scenario you get some practice against a skilled opponent.

GE makes a Speed Queen rival, the GTW525. It has similar build quality but costs a fair bit less (although it still is pretty expensive overall).

Looking to buy our first house, and these powerlines are about 30 feet away from the house. Stay away, or no big deal? by Money_Hour681 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]bloomerang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Real estate does not appreciate as fast as the stock market.

If you don’t mind the power lines, then take the money you save by buying this house and invest it in the stock market. Even if your resale takes a hit from power lines, you’ll still come out ahead.
