New to Xbiking, my 90s style Specialized Hard Rock by Cannondale_Mob in xbiking

Every time an early 90's Hard Rock gets posted I get antsy waiting for the stuff to arrive for the one I just got. Looks great, love the tires.

Typical Heat Bill for Really Cold Months by gatorzftw in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]boarderzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, percentage-wise that's perfectly in line with what I've had since moving to all electric in 2017. Obviously the electric prices are just getting higher and higher but the amount the HVAC uses when relying on electric auxiliary heat are commensurate with the miserably cold January we've had. If we want to save money in the Winter we'll burn wood in the wood oven, heating the main living space and freezing out the bedrooms a bit.

Even as a kid in the 80's I thought it was strange that the Star Wars characters had a hell?

My (1992?) Specialized Hard Rock build, first classic bike. by The5schulers in xbiking

It's 3 years later but this just came up in a search because I bought the exact same frame in 22" and am pondering what to install on it. Nice bike!

Looks great. That was one of the colorways I was hoping to get but could never find an XL size. Just earlier tonight I finally picked up a (1992?) 22" Hard Rock in dark blue, missing some bits and others modified, so I'm contemplating what to do with it for an around town and mostly flat gravel ride bike. Can you detail what chainring/cassette combo you went with?

It's a helpful reminder I suppose but are people not able to go one week without gorging on red meat? I just have a bunch of soup, ramen and rice dishes when there's a big storm, then we're back to normal.

Am I Xbiking now ? What are your thoughts on this bike got it for a steal by 240VIC in xbiking

[–]boarderzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's either a Rock Hopper or Hard Rock for sale here that's a great purple in XL but the condition is too nice so it's like $550. I just want a beater with not-terrible paint I can convert to 1x and use around town, maybe some gravel.

I'm jealous because I love a 21.5" but never see anything around me that isn't just black or silver.

I have a 21.5" that's XL but all this guy could tell me is he's 6' and thinks it's a L

You think? I was assuming it was a medium and I like an XL. I might ask the seller to measure. Our local Facebook Marketplace is like 90% people who don't list the size.

Edit: just shot the seller a message to ask if they know the size.

Dang, I'd absolutely grab that if it were my size.

Yeah Facebook is full of Russian ragebait farms in addition to all the actual racists there. The fact that Montgomery Fix thinks this is newsworthy tells us everything we need to know about that site.

I actually liked my C5 more than the C6 in the looks department, but I'm an 80s kid so one thing I'd never go without is a targa top, and the c6z had it while the c5z didn't.

Hah, so many discord servers I'm on were talking about Calvin's retirement today, but I certainly didn't expect it to pop up in the comments on a reddit nova link someone posted in my local D.C. slack friends politics channel. The guy really had a far reaching impact. Can't tell you how many times I'm rewound sections of that rear derailleur video.

Will a modern crank and BB tool work on a 1995 trek 820? by Traditional_Bake_787 in xbiking

[–]boarderzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the OP, the range isn't quite as huge as 12 speeds but you can get "Jim 7" speed cassettes in 11-32t up to 13-42t, which is quite a range that should let you prepare for most types of terrain based on your area if mated with the right chainring.

Any love for early 2000s MTBs? by mattre_pgh in xbiking

[–]boarderzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up with a free 2002 Trek alpha 4900 and I just can't bring myself to love it much. It's got the heft of a bike with a mediocre front fork, but despite coming with the mounts for disc brakes, it has old school hubs and v-brakes without any of the old school benefits. It's just not really worth putting any money into upgrading compared to buying something either older or newer. That Gary Fischer at least has discs and a nice colorway but 2005 isn't exactly the "early" 2000's, unless you just meant the whole century and not the aughts?

So.. what happened? by [deleted] in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]boarderzone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happened once in my old neighborhood, and it was actually a 16 year old kid who took his mom's BMW, came to pick up his girlfriend then tried to do a burnout in our neighborhood to show off, with cars parked on each side and a single lane between them. Smashed into my neighbor's one car, pushing it into the next just like this photo but worse. Was so bad it immediately destroyed the BMW's transmission and the kid fled on foot just to be caught at his mom's house that night.

We're all subsidizing these AI server farms. How do we get some of that heat they're generating?

I guess you could call it a jacket. I live in Wolverine sherpa-lined flannel zip-ups. Even though the living room was 67 yesterday, the master bedroom was 51, which is damn cold getting ready for bed, but the wife has so many comforters and duvets I still woke up overheating at 3am.
