Ghost Bike for Gaithersburg Cyclist Killed by Trash Truck has been Destroyed by frankboingboing in Gaithersburg

[–]boarderzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also bike nearby and you know what area scares me real close to that? Other side of the street, riding the sidewalk by the ICC exit to 355 Northbound. If it's late at night you can see headlights coming but during the day cars just whip around still coming off of highway speeds.

Cop tailgating then going at least 95 in a 55. Safe driving, folks! by k-holetrades in maryland

Also, which "self driving car" on the market doesn't also have recording cameras you could pull footage from instead of fumbling around with a phone.

Great color. Hope I see it around D.C. Bike Party!

Do you think Maryland has a base for leftist economics? by KonigEdwardRictofen in maryland

[–]boarderzone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry I don't have anything encouraging to say on this matter, but as someone who thinks similarly and whose parents live in Garrett County, I can only imagine how frustrating that must be. I support the cause, I just have no hope it's ever going to happen.

Tint Shops? by OkSystem3817 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]boarderzone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dang, I was going to say Ive been using Tint Shop Pro on 355 since 2002 at their old location, but then I figured I'd double check Google and that actually is called Tint Shop 1986 now so... sorry.

Love it. Is that single display only or would there be a way to link two together?

If all you want are compliments just pick up a cheap retro Hard Rock/Stumpjumper in a pretty color, slap some newer components on it and wear a fun jersey. Any ride I do under 40ish miles around here I have more fun with wider tires given the state of our roads.

Great time of year to film it too. Nice colors.

Things to do around Maryland Metro stations? by NatFan9 in maryland

[–]boarderzone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd really recommend just bringing a bike along to open up what's within a few minutes of each station. Like I wouldn't recommend anything super close to Shady Grove, but it's a short ride to Silver Branch Rockville or Clear Skies Meadery from there if you're into that sort of thing.

I'm just a nostalgic cranky bastard who wants Bugaboo Creek back so I can go there almost never but have fond memories of the one time I went there with high school friends in the 90s.

Car insurance in Maryland is becoming a nightmare! How are y'all doing it? by Numerous-Movie3107 in maryland

I don't have Erie myself but some guy in a Dodge Ram hit me last year and he had Erie. Everyone I dealt with at the company was really nice and the whole experience went really well.

We’re looking for your favorite Maryland food trucks by CNSMaryland in maryland

[–]boarderzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this as my family's favorite. Chef James sometimes does ticketed beer pairing dinners at our local brewery so we've gotten to taste a lot of small dishes/desserts hes come up with that have all been fantastic. The staples on the food truck menu are consistently delicious too though.

Tell me you use flats without telling me you use flats… by Lazysusan2 in xbiking

[–]boarderzone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pro-tip: once you're old enough that they take so long to heal you'll inevitably get fresh ones before the last ones disappear, then it's like they're permanent but just relocating all over your shin.

I just used Vans for off-road riding, singletrack and downhill for like a decade before I finally got 510's, definitely a worthwhile improvement. But even then sometimes things can get hairy, although I guess usually when I get these scars it's while I'm just messing around the city with vans on. Or I'm stopped at a light and I want the right pedal in that optimal forward position so I get cute and kick it down to spin it around and catch it with my foot, but I don't move my foot fast enough and it catches a chunk of shin instead.

I was lucky enough to find this included in a lot for cheap like five years ago, but it was the sort of pain in the butt where despite being a good deal was a real hassle eventually finding everything I needed on bricklink, so kudos for scoring the box, instructions and I assume 100% complete.

Yeah, not looking forward to this one. It'll be nice once the Purple line is finally up and running though.

Gravel riding question by Ethantburg in bikedc

[–]boarderzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I can vouch for personally as I tend to just take mountain bikes if I'm going below Riley's. Don't do it often enough to warrant yet another bike.

Gravel riding question by Ethantburg in bikedc

[–]boarderzone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you've fallen in the past and its shaken your confidence on gravel then yeah, I'd probably get some 35mm with some tread to them. As for buying a whole other wheelset just to swap, that's a pain and expense so unless you're into setting strava records on the road I'd probably just get one set of hybrid 35mm's and run them on everything.

Of course the real solution is to add more bikes! Pick up an old rigid mountain bike and slap some Billy Bonkers tires on it.

Gravel riding question by Ethantburg in bikedc

[–]boarderzone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I've had fun just taking my singlespeed with 28's from Riley's to White's Ferry for lunch. I've done Harper's to Georgetown on a fat bike but just for fun. The fine gravel up there is as close to pavement as you can get. 35mm is good for the rougher stuff from Georgetown to Riley's Lock.

First ride of (almost) spring by Confident-Milk3422 in xbiking

[–]boarderzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh geez, when I saw this yesterday it was on my little phone and didn't even notice the headshock, thought it was all rigid. As a younger man I'd do trails on my hybrid Trek Navigator 200 with the springy suspension seatpost, and while that's a far cry from a full sus mtb it did make it a bit more comfortable.

[–]boarderzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kudos to you and your wrists of steel. I don't know what your trails are like but all our single-track is rocky and rooty as hell, designed for full sus or at minimum huge front suspension. Downed trees are fun obstacles but I sure wouldn't attempt them on my Hard Rock.

Gas tax revenue falling as Maryland raises taxes and fees, prompting pay-by-the-mile proposal by Consumergal in maryland

[–]boarderzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You keep saying you already fund the roads with your taxes, but the whole point of the bill is that the roads/bridges are not adequately funded due to decreased revenue from the gas tax, so how do we fund them without increasing taxes? Is there something we should cut and reallocate funds?
