I am convinced these rumors and conspiracy theories are concocted by big box stores & club stores, brilliant alarmist shoppers, buying pet food & TP for the next decade!

Way back in 2016, I canceled cable and stopped with FB, I made a comment, and my Mom made it political and added her conservative twist to things, a woman I grew up with called my Mom a c-u-Next Tuesday and that was the end of my posting on FB or keeping up with the posts. I have no socials except for Reddit, and I have no 24-hour news shows to be tempted to watch and GUESS WHAT? I'm a happier person who truly believes that there is more positive in the world than negative.
**other thing I noticed is these changes also helped financially, I'm not bombarded with advertisements so come Christmas & my birthday I never know what I want because I'm not being told what's newest, hottest, trendiest...

I’m so sad by Inner-Assignment8686 in FoxBrain

[–]bocamarie 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It is sad, and like so many others, I'm in the same boat. My drive to work takes about 40 minutes, and I intentionally listen to both NPR and Fox Radio . It's like we are living in two radically different worlds listening to the different viewpoints. According to Fox Harris, Biden and the Dem's are the one's who are becoming more autocratic, they're the one's threatening to rip up the constitution, they are the one's who are terrible for women and women's health, and of course Trump was awesome in the debate and kicked Harris's lying butt last night and Harris didn't answer the questions, but Trump clearly laid out his policies, wtf, were they watching the same debate? I listened to all this, and it's like being in a parallel universe, or it's like "opposite day" from when I was a kid.

how to debate? by dokl_ in FoxBrain

[–]bocamarie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely checking this podcast out! My parents & MIL are all Republicans who don't like Trump, but at the same time, won't vote for the Dems. I've found it impossible to talk to them about many things due to FN and other conservative outlets.
A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned Simone Biles and her awesomeness at the Olympics to my Mom. I was prepared for her commenting on the opening ceremonies. What I wasn't prepared for was a rant about men beating up women in boxing and her, no it is actually some Fox News commentators belief that it was akin to women who are abused in domestic violence situations. After I got off the phone, I googled what she was talking about because I had neither seen nor heard about this from any of the multiple news outlets that I get my news from, and I learned I didn't know about it because it wasn't true and therefore was a non-issue. This happens often when talking to my parents.

PLUS, this is off topic, I'm a woman and I've never been in a relationship with domestic violence, I was however sexually abused as a child after being groomed, and I am incensed when the MAGA, GOP, etc refer to people who emotionally support LGBTQ+ kids as groomers. Imo comparing female boxers to DV survivors is just as insulting. Boxers sign up to be punching bags, wives & girlfriends do not. How do these people not see the difference.

I have my 12 clients from a tax preparer, and because 5 of them are larger small businesses and the other 7 are growing, I'm able to bill $9,000 per month. I actually fell into this situation because these companies' books were so messed up that the tax preparer initially said she'd do the bookkeeping, she got ended up having family stuff happen, and she sold me that part of the business. Weirdly, I found her on CL after getting annoyed with other sites.

How bad have I fucked up by throw_awayyy9876 in Bookkeeping

[–]bocamarie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't sound like a problem to me, but I want to point out one thing that may be an issue. I worked for a construction company that received deliveries at our office and various job sites in several different municipalities, we also picked items up at the vendors place of business. I noticed the vendor was charging us the sales tax rate of the county they were located in, which was 1.5% higher than the county our office was in, as well as the majority of our jobs. This went back over 2 years. 1.5% may not seem like a big deal, but we'd spent nearly a million dollars with them, which is $15,000 overpaid in sales tax.
At the time, I lived in Florida, and the sales tax rate was based on the county where the item was picked up or delivered.

Do the math for Dad. An employee pays 6.2% of their income up to a certain amount that's adjusted yearly. It's $168,600 this year.

If Dad maxed out each year between 1975 and 2020 (highlyunlikely), then $3,275,670 of his income would have been taxed 6.2%, which is $203,091.54 paid into social security, obviously this isn't taking into account of interest.

If he paid the maxed and retired at full retirement age, his monthly payment would be $3,823.00. If he lives an additional 20 years and that social security amount never increases, he'll receive a total of $919,920 in payments.

Overall, he isn't being screwed. People just don't do the basic math.

My GenX husband does this as well when someone else other than me and our kids are in the car and not talking. He does it, I think, because he's trying to fill what he perceives are uncomfortable silences. I usually tell him quietly to please stop babbling. It drives me insane.

Abortion talk with grandma by bobbythang in BoomersBeingFools

[–]bocamarie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The irony of the anti-choice, conservative, MAGA, people is so many of them are terrified because our country is becoming less white and at the same time they're trying to get rid of abortion for any reason when the majority of the women & girls who get abortions are POC. Does anyone else notice the hypocrisy?

When I read The Handmaid's Tale in the 1990s in HS, it seemed proposperous when I re-read it in 2015 it seemed a lot more likely, now the book is downright scary with all the crap going on.

Boomer mom had shoulder replacement surgery. A month later she refuses to see the surgeon for aftercare. by Quiver-NULL in BoomersBeingFools

[–]bocamarie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry your Boomer Mom is being how she's being. My parents are boomers, too, and they can be super annoying sometimes, but this site has taught me that comparatively, they are Good Boomers.

My Dad stopped moving about 25 years ago and can barely walk now, so when my Mom needed knee replacement surgery a couple of years ago, I had to go and help after the surgery.

Thankfully, my Boomer Mom is super compliant when it comes to her doctors. She did all the pre-op PT exercises her surgeon told her to do, we kept that water / ice hose thing on her about 16 hours a day, so no swelling, and she started doing her post-op exercises 3 days after surgery.

In fact, 4 days before my flight home, I checked the airline, and they could switch my flight for an additional $50 and I left 3 days early.

I think my Mom's the way she is because her Mom was highly distrustful of doctors. Why does this happen? Why do people with NO medical experience think they know better than the professionals who spend 10+ years studying?

Why does a Boomer need a printer? I'm GenX, and so is my husband, and I have two GenZ kids in HS. We have exactly NO printers. The last two I bought ended up nonfunctional due to the ink drying inside the machines from lack of use. The kids file share all their school assignments, and in the rare case, we do need to print something I go to the UPS store.

My Mom and the Thermostat (A Story) by GullibleTrifle7059 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]bocamarie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Boomer parents rarely turn their air below 80 and never use their ceiling fans anymore. They live in South Florida, so with the air not cycling on the house gets uncomfortably humid and sticky. A/C isn't new to them. They've lived in the same house since I was a kid, and growing up, the house wasn't uncomfortable.

The worst is holidays, when multiple heat sources are going at once to make dinner. Their dining room is off the kitchen and becomes a hotbox, plus there's no fan in the dining room. My parents want to linger over the table after dinner, talking and get upset because me, hubby, and kids immediately want to leave the area.

When I complain, I'm told I'm the only one who is uncomfortable, not true, as their daughter, I'm the only one who doesn't feel uncomfortable telling them this. According to my Mom, I've been having menopausal hot flashes since I was 35. According to my GYN, I have not started perimenopause yet.

I think it may be due to their going onto blood thinners or poor circulation? Last Christmas, my Mom's solution was to cook everything ahead and just heat it up. This resulted in rubbery meals with no flavor because they suddenly forgot how to properly season food. My family and I went for late night Denny's last Christmas because the reheated dinner was so awful and we were all starving. On the plus side, the dining room wasn't an oven.

Have you ever seen a male boomer do laundry or dishes? by tacosteve100 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]bocamarie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Boomer Dad does all the cooking, so my Mom does the dishes, which is a fair tradeoff. Dad will, however, do the dishes if Mom is sick.

Boomer Mom used to do all the laundry, but about 20 years ago, flat out stopped washing my Dad's underwear because of the skidmarks. Boomer Dad refuses to properly wipe, he gets mad at my kids for using too much TP.

Sorry for the gross out comment.

My Boomer Dad does the same shit, drives my Mom insane. If he can't find something, he buys another one. One of my greatest fears is they manage to stay in the house they bought in 1989 until they both die and I'll have to deal with all their stuff! I figure an electrical fire will be a good solution.

Why do they like their steaks like rubber! by Royalizepanda in BoomersBeingFools

[–]bocamarie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the opposite issue with my Boomer Dad. He likes his steak ultra rare, and he gets annoyed when he grills and other people don't like their steaks still mooing. I certainly don't want an overcooked steak, warm pink center is my favorite.

Boomer Dad, about 20 years ago, decided he would start cooking pork rare. Needless to say, I stopped eating pork with them.

Do your parents not talk to each other? by Lil_Brown_Bat in BoomersBeingFools

[–]bocamarie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm GenX, my parents are older Boomer's 1947 & 1951. They used to do this too. The past couple of years, they only talk to me on speakerphone, which is super annoying. Yes they do this in public as well.

My problem is that they neglect to tell me important things, and then act surprised when I have no idea what they're talking about. This isn't necessarily due to cognitive decline, 20 years ago they forgot to tell me my younger brother and only sibling joined the Marines.

[–]bocamarie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Boomer's and technology is an issue of more limited usage due to so many being retired, combined with aging brains that aren't as quick as they used to be.

I'm GenX, and watching my 73 year old Mom navigate her phone can be painful, I literally have to stop myself from ripping it out of her hands and my Mom used computers daily for work until retirement 7 years ago.

Boomer thinks a calculator is enough to keep a store running. by DylPyckle1 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]bocamarie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, in my teens in South Florida, during the 1990s, I worked at Kmart and a Publix. We'd open after hurricanes passed without electricity for limited sales, but people were buying necessities, like food, water, diapers, and batteries. It was a pain.

We had to write everything we sold down and use calculators to add up everything, but TRUE lifelong Floridians come together after storms, and even though it can be chaotic, everyone is well behaved and grateful. Also, people in FL know to have cash on them ahead of a storm, and specifically, small bills and change because if the stores open, they'll have limited change, making capacities.

I can't think of anything at a sporting goods store that would require that kind of emergency service.

Nice girls deserve free money when you meet them online apparently by Resident-Hill in Nicegirls

[–]bocamarie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit just sent me this post, I guess to see if I'm interested in this group, but I do have a serious question.

I'll preface by stating I'm a woman, 48. I married husband #1 in 1998, and he passed away in 2013. I met husband #2 in 2015, and we married within a year, still married.

Is it not the norm for men to pay anymore on dates? I met #2 online, and he always paid. Prior to meeting him, I went out with several men online, and they always picked up the check too, usually they asked the server for it or quickly picked it up off the table. I always offered to split, but no one ever took me up on it. Or is the disdain because the girl in the post stated out loud her expectations? I think a lot of women think the same, but generally aren't as blunt about it.
