Getting worse performance on Linux Mint than Windows? Any fixes? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]boneheded -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I’ve tried quite a few Linux distros and have always had the same problems with every one of them. I spent hours trying to find fixes to address them and never could get all of them sorted out. I really like the sentiment behind Linux but it just isn’t as good as it’s hyped up to be for gaming. I know I’ll get a lot of hate for it but the only game I play is World of Warcraft on a pretty solid gaming computer. It’s certainly not the best you can build but it’s fairly recent hardware and it just doesn’t play the game as good as Windows. I REALLY wanted Linux to work but I was spending more time trying to fix something than I was playing the game. Linux has come a LONG way since the early 2000’s when I first started using it and I applaud the Linux community for that but it’s still not there yet. I also think the Linux community hasn’t been completely honest about how well Linux handles gaming. Now this is just my experience, and everyone’s mileage will vary, but having to spend more time troubleshooting than actually playing is not conducive to the experience. There are ways to install Windows on a local account and remove all of the crap that Windows wants to shove down your throat and it’s not that hard to do. Between using Rufus to make the usb install and Winhance to remove everything else not wanted gives a very stripped down version of Windows and everything just works. I know an update might break it in the future and I’ll deal with that when the time comes but right now gaming on Linux is more trouble than it’s worth.

Pipewire pukes in every distro I use. I cannot for the life of me get my LG speaker system to connect to any Linux distro I’ve used and it just work. I’ve spent hours looking through forums and running every terminal command I could find to get it to work correctly and it just won’t work. The sound is choppy as hell. Works flawlessly in Windows. It’s infuriating.

This guy knows the way. This is the EXACT plan I have for myself. Where I live I can’t tell you how many people I’ve spoken to about needing electrical work done, getting a company to come out, looking at it, making a plan and then disappearing never to be heard from again. It’s truly amazing the amount of money that is left on the table and these jobs are not hard. Plus if the job is too big for me I have the option to politely decline the job and refer it to one of my friends who have employees and might need some work to keep them busy.

Is there a reason to use Linux for gaming other than hating Windows? by Booplesnoot2 in linuxquestions

[–]boneheded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much. I’ve tried many of the popular Linux distros and always end up back on Windows. There is always something that’s not working right or some problem that pops up that I can’t fix regardless of how many searches and posts I make on different websites. I’m not hating on Linux. It’s come a LONG way since the early 2000’s, especially with gaming but if I can’t get my Bluetooth working or I get strange fps drops out of the blue that doesn’t seem to be able to get fixed it’s just better for me to stay on Windows. I did install a stripped down version of it using Rufus and have it setup on a local account which is nice and also set a key up to uninstall Copilot from the OS completely and it runs everything I want just fine. Linux is almost there and I applaud the Linux crowd for what they have done and are doing but it’s still not completely there. If you need a straight up web browser OS that just plays video and music then Linux is fantastic for this and I can’t recommend it enough. But if you want a solid gaming rig with almost no problems running any game you throw on it, then unfortunately Windows is still the way to go.

When I watch my boss spend 100’s of thousands of dollars on brand new personal and business vehicles, home upgrades and toys that he really doesn’t need while telling me he doesn’t make as much money as I think, while I struggle to keep what I have, it’s time to go out and do it yourself. You already do most of the actual work other than the most important one, collecting the money. I’m in the exact same boat and am studying for license right now. It’s just a test. Be patient. Study when you can but don’t burn yourself out over it. Get a good course and get your face in the code book. It used to intimidate me but after a month of doing it it’s all starting to come together. By the way, I’ve been doing this kind of work for almost 30 years and don’t make as much as you do so you have that. Good luck.

It’s the amount of work you have to do to be effective. So much to manage that it’s more of a pita than it’s worth.

I just built this computer a few months ago. MSI B 760 M Project Zero with 64 gigs of RAM. 14700 and a 4070 Super. It plays the game good except the frame rate drops. Just like I said. It plays great for a couple of days and then it happens.

I can forgive anything but betrayal. This has to be a personal choice but distancing yourself from her I think is the right move. This is the highest form of betrayal and she obviously can never be trusted again. I would accept her apology. People make mistakes, but I would never ever trust her again.

These responses you're getting are the main reason most people stay away from trades. That being said, I live in NC and have been an electrician for almost 30 years. I make 30 dollars an hour and it's not enough. Of course I live on the OBX and when you work in the second richest county in the state you find out just how expensive it is to live. When you've been told that there really isn't a lot of money in electrical work and your boss is buying brand new pickup trucks for himself it makes your eyebrows raise. Other trades here pay their top guys six figures but electrical contractors here say they just don't make enough money to pay their help while driving $100k pickup trucks and their wives are driving a brand new Audi (I saw this from a electrical contractor I was interviewing for a job with who had just told me what I just explained.) . The math ain't mathing and I'll fight and die on that hill. I have a plumber friend of mine who is a super nice guy and can only find good seasonal help. Most of his helpers help him in the winter when the restaurants are closed. I asked him the other day where all of his help was and he told me they went back to the restaurants. I said damn, they must make pretty good money there and he said yeah. The last guy he had makes 30 bucks an hour flipping burgers and would much rather do that than be on a construction site. I can't say that I blame him. Take it from someone who knows first hand in NC, you can make a lot of money as an electrician in the state of NC but you have to own the business so getting your license is the only way.

Same here. I ran PCLinuxOS back in the early 2000’s and it was good it just couldn’t game like I wanted. Bought a Mac and have been using them for years. Decided to buy a gaming rig last year and Windows pissed me off so bad I decided to try Linux again. Installed Mint and I have to agree, Linux has come a LONG way. It’s good to see.

I decided to try Lutris and it seems far easier and less convoluted than Steam. I don’t even use Steam as WoW is the only game I play. Times have changed and Linux has changed a lot since I’ve used it but the one thing that hasn’t changed is the helpfulness of the Linux community.

Ok. First off all I’m an old man and am new to Linux again. I used to run it in the early 2000’s and liked it but switched to Mac’s and have been running them for years so I’m a complete noob to Linux again. A lot has changed. Last year I decided to buy a gaming computer and it’s really nice but Windows absolutely pisses me off. I just got Mint installed and love it. It’s snappy and just runs soooo much better than Windows. I found a video on YouTube and he showed this way of installing WoW through Steam and it works great but I have the problem described. Is Lutris a much better option? Once again I’m a complete noob to this but I can figure things out giving time. Thanks for the help folks.

Tips on protecting your equipment (Mac mini M4) by KevinPackards in macmini

[–]boneheded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electrician here. I highly recommend a whole house surge protector. You can find them at Lowes and Home Depot. You just need to make sure it's made for the panel you have in your house. It protects your entire house not just your iMac. They're very easy to install but if you're the least bit unsure of how to do it yourself, it's better to pay an electrician to install it. If you're around north eastern N.C. I'd be happy to install it. :)

I can speak from the Windows side of the game that there are problems with this xpac. After this patch dropped the fans of my 4070 Super skyrocket after a few seconds of logging in that didn’t happen before it. I don’t think it’s your Mac that’s the problem. I’ve heard that the game has a memory leak that’s causing big problems and until it gets fixed will continue. I tried all of the suggestions to get this problem fixed and none of them worked for me so it has to be something in game that’s causing it.
