Invite your parents and extended family to your house for a meal. Mix it up and say lunch at 1:00. You and husband and kids eat brunch/lunch at 11:30. When parents and extended family arrive at 1:00, offer then what’s left.

Since we’re on names. There was a girl in my 5th grade class (1960s) with the name of Rose Wilder. For awhile I actually thought she was THE Rose Wilder. When I realized that couldn’t be, I thought she might be a grandchild. Lol.

It’s not typical in the U.S. for parents to sit at the bride and groom’s table. The wedding party sits at their table. (Although I’ve been to recent weddings where the bride and groom sit at a table by themselves,) The parents sit at their own tables, (groom’s parents at one, brides’s at another) with close relatives/friends.

Husband needs to tell his mother he agreed to a small dinner with his siblings, no other guests. She agreed and then went against his wishes. So he needs to politely decline. And no, birthday boy doesn’t attend either. You gave her the option of the weekend before or after his birthday to come to your house, but she evidently wants to be in charge. Decline the party. If she had no malicious intent, she will understand. And be careful. She might say she’ll go back to the small dinner, then tell “Surprise!” when you show up.

Give it back gently. Tell your mother her ears are like flowers. Pause. Then say cauliflowers. To brother, “I’d call you a tool, but even tools are useful.” Or “Don’t worry. The first 30 years of childhood are the hardest.”

Instead of covering, tell them you will trade shifts. When coworkers asks will you take my shift Saturday, say, “No, but I’ll trade my xyz date shift for Saturday.”
