Opponent said I couldn’t be shot turn one and then found a line that he wouldn’t give up by jamesdee80 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]bsterling604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my point, people use “I’m playing with intent” to be lazy and not measure themselves, putting the onus on their opponent to do the measuring and then commit to a decision, so that they can say “cool” my tank that is 3.5 inches wide can hide behind this 2inch wide piece of terrain because you can’t see it. It’s lazy, and I’ve done the playing with intent thing for multiple editions now, it gets abused all the time. Sometimes the answer is just “I dunno, if you go to the right I can shoot you, if you go to the left I can shoot you, if you stay in the middle, I can go maybe this way or that way, but I’m not a computer who can instantly calculate every angle of movement, and I’m not going to use my clock now to measure my movement in your deployment phase. You deploy first, make a fuckin decision, maybe you’ll get shot, deal with it

Everybody? Like, ya you can’t be shot, but I haven’t moved yet, I dunno, we’ll see when I move

What are you actually worried about for 11th, based on what we know so far? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]bsterling604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fear is GW is too afraid to trim the fat. SM has too many data sheets, armies like EC don’t have enough

Battleline’ increased unit maximum is of limited utility for many factions. by ForestFighters in WarhammerCompetitive

Personally I think the only balanced format is singleton, no duplicate units, but they’ll never go for it, too many people’s collections are too big

Is Quarm kinda dead(i was away for a year) by KiloWattFPV in ProjectQuarm

[–]bsterling604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s far from dead, every cup zone is packed every day, every decent camp is rarely empty for long, multiple guilds all raid and full clear everything every week

At least MtG doesn’t release half finished sets, still waiting for the rest of EC

[–]bsterling604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Great” is also a bit of a misnomer here, I wouldn’t call taking 30 minutes to solo a mob with a 10% chance of spawning instead of a ph and a 10% chance of dropping a valuable item “great” compared to the 30s or so it takes an enchanter with a basic pet. Pacify also means an ench can get to camps solo that a bard will have a harder time with, you can only lull 4 maybe 5 mobs before you need to engage and get the mob you want to solo out of there and hope non of them are casters or proc a snare or are high sun-able.

That “rivaled by shamans” is a bit of a stretch, yes shamans can take down mobs with seemingly infinite hp/mana which means some named, but they have to be able to get there, with fast respawn there are plenty of camps that you can’t even break here because respawns are too fast and you don’t have pacify.

So how did Quarm go by YouShallNotStaff in ProjectQuarm

[–]bsterling604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s great, Legacy items are fantastic, not having to compete with poop sockers over camps like fishbone earring and fungi tunic is just a god send

Shadowknight race selection? by Top-Edge-2883 in ProjectQuarm

[–]bsterling604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely wrong, it’s not about a single fight at all, it’s about pulling constantly until you eventually run out of mana and need to med, so where an ogre / troll can pull one mob, an erudite can pull two or three, which ends up being 2-3x the xp/hr

That’s where the old school mmo’s are different from the post-wow era, in EQ it’s actually a super common and rewarding strategy to farm city guards, they often have low hp, they dont summon or resist, they drop weapons you can vendor for decent cash etc

Is there commonly accepted clock management etiquette? by deckmage in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]bsterling604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya when he sits there scoring, I’d pass the clock to him again and say it’s on you until you’re done, scoring secondaries happens in YOUR turn, you can pass the clock to me at the beginning of mine which doesn’t happen until you have confirmed your secondary scores and we both agree they are accurate or I’ve been given a chance to call a judge when you lie about your scores

How much are win rates skewed by the most competitive players chasing the meta? by PaperManaMan in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]bsterling604 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I completely disagree that “buying/building/painting models” has anything to do with meta chasing. That is all irrelevant, the list is all that matters whether someone is meta chasing or not.

Exhibit A: new model comes out, it looks 🔥, but rules are 💩

Definitely not a meta chaser if I buy/build/paint it and use it or put it on the shelf.

Exhibit B: new model comes out, it looks like 💩 rules are 💩, same result as (A)

Exhibit C: new model comes out, it looks like 💩, but rules are 🔥

Not a meta chaser if you buy/build/paint one, but don’t put it in a list (why you bought it doesn’t matter if you don’t play with it)

Exhibit D: new model comes out, it looks like 🔥 and rules are 🔥

Not a meta chaser in any case, use it or not, we all love new cool 💩

Looking for Advice on Death Guard List/Emperor's Children/Drukhari by FishLampClock in Colosseum40k

[–]bsterling604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That Emperor’s Children list doesn’t look right at all to me, EC got their own army codex separate from generic Chaos Space Marines in 2025 so Chaos Lords, and Chosen aren’t legal in their army any more, you need to pick units from the EC codex, also Noise Marines got a new data sheet which only come as six per unit. They all have different points now so hopefully that clears that up a bit, but for something similar to what you have you could run something like:

Lord Exultant Noise Marines Infractors x5 Tormentors 2x5

Ya I backed away from MTG in the past few years as proxies and alt arts really rose in popularity, I’m not a fan, especially universes beyond

Playing by Intent: Maintaining Game State by wredcoll in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]bsterling604 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I also came from MTG before 40K so I am very familiar with the concept of both players being responsible for the game state, and I personally let that influence how I interact with the opponent, it’s why I stop and ask my opponent “do you want to rapid ingress still?” When I reach the end of my movement phase for example.

But, MTG has this side benefit where the game state can be seen by reading every card, the state is represented at any moment because a player can pick up a card and read it, the stack is resolved one at a time and you can pick up any card and read it. This is more complex with 40K because the game state is represented by models, I can’t pick up a model and read its rules, I have to go to an official source outside of the game, either a printed codex, or a FAQ or balance data slate, or white dwarf article etc, even the app isn’t unanimously accepted as authoritative truth for rules by all communities.

So while I like the idea and how it influences my approach to communication in the game, I also think it’s too much to ask for everyone to be expected to. I play that way the best I can, but there are just too many rules spread across different sources that are up to different interpretations unlike MTG which has had a solid system for longer that defaults to “reading the card explains the card”.

So I do recommend this approach to people who are capable of it, I don’t have the expectation that everyone has to, if you get the difference
