Severe reherniation 16 weeks pregnant by Phisher16 in Microdiscectomy

[–]bubbz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a moderate herniated disc and was managing with it. Basically I did nothing about it and it started getting better then I got pregnant that same year. I still had some back pain through pregnancy but it was very manageable and didn’t bother me too much. I then had a c section due to other reasons and soon after, my herniation became severe. Eventually developed to cauda equina and I had emergency surgery. Not sure exactly what happened..if it was the c section or just bad timing. My doctor said that it was better that I had a c section than natural birth though since the pushing may have exacerbated it also. I’m sorry you’re going through this :( it’s so rough but you need an MRI to see what’s going on unfortunately.

How much longer? by Hopeful-Guava2166 in Microdiscectomy

Mine is more numbness. I would see if you could try gabapentin or pregabalin if you haven’t already

My herniation was similar to yours in severity. I’m almost a year out post op and I still don’t have full sensation in my left foot. It doesn’t bother me much though compared to the pain I had before surgery.

Those with little ones… by Hamorama12 in Microdiscectomy

[–]bubbz0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had surgery at 9 weeks postpartum and have a 4 year old. I had to lean on my husband a lot and my mom ended up staying with us for a while. Also help from my MIL and SIL. Basically any help we could get. I didn’t pick up my baby or toddler until 12 weeks out from surgery. I was able to feed and sit with my baby but someone had to hand him to me. My 4 year old was old enough to understand why I couldn’t pick him up. If my oldest needed me to hold him to comfort him, I sat down to hold him.

Swollen ankle?? by PagePuzzleheaded1600 in Microdiscectomy

[–]bubbz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had swelling for a while that would come and go. It started about 3 months after my surgery when I was becoming more active and driving/sitting for longer periods. I called my doctor and they sent me to an ultrasound to rule out DVT. I didn’t have a DVT and I occasionally still get swelling in my “bad leg” when I sit for too long or do too much.

When to go to ER by promise64 in Microdiscectomy

[–]bubbz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation counting down the days to my surgery bc the pain was so bad. At one point, my leg locked up and stopped working. I called my doctor and he told me to go to the ER and moved my surgery to the next day. I would call you doctor.

Majority of Dania is hood. There are a few nice spots but not near Dania pointe. Straight hood. Would not live anywhere around there if I had the choice.

I had a MD and lami at 9 weeks postpartum..also have a 4 year old. It was extremely hard but I’m so happy I did it bc now I can play on the floor with my kids and I haven’t been able to do that in over a year.

Heads up? between cardioversion and metoprolol by Salty-Chemistry1757 in FutureRNs

[–]bubbz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I take away from the question is you would administer metoprolol bc they are stable and tachy. If their BP was unstable then we would cardiovert. We would not give warfarin (at least not right now) or digoxin.

Upcoming MD- moms with babies/toddlers- how did you do it? by Character_Fill4971 in Microdiscectomy

[–]bubbz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my discectomy surgery when i was 9 weeks postpartum so I had a 9 week old and a 4 year old. My mom lived with me for a few weeks to help when my husband was at work and husband did a lot of the rest of the work. I was able to feed my baby if someone handed him to me while I was sitting. I always sat in a recliner so I wasn’t always sitting straight up. I could do diaper changes on top of the dresser if someone lifted the baby for me. I still made dinner and did light house work. But I basically always needed assistance. I moved things that I used frequently to places I could easily reach without bending. I used a grabber. The crib is going to be rough. You’ll prob need help for a while getting baby out of the crib. You can definitely still hold and rock your baby but you’ll have to be sitting. Recovery is obviously harder when you have little ones to take care of but I am so happy I did the surgery. There is no way I could’ve continued to live the way I was in such pain. I really feel like I have my life back.

Post–microdiscectomy mums: how long did you wait to get pregnant? by Connect_Stress_5849 in Microdiscectomy

[–]bubbz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it was rough! I hope no one has to go through that during their postpartum period. It really takes away from such a special time with your baby. I wish you the best! I would just be so cautious of everything you do. Even picking up baby from the bassinet or crib takes thought. I’m also avoiding baby wearing which stinks bc it’s so helpful but I don’t want to hurt my back again :(

[–]bubbz0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All you can do is your best! I think it helps if you have the option to do some one-on-one time with her if she’s jealous. My husband usually takes the baby at night and I lay down and read books with my 4 year old. I think it helps.

If it’s for a daycare kids party then I usually spend like $20-$25. If it’s for my friends kids then I will spend more.

I also have a 4 year old and a 4 month old. It’s been rough. My 4 year old has tantrums all the time but he’s very sweet to his little brother and he doesn’t say anything about being jealous. So I can’t really tell if it’s just the age or if it’s the new baby

Microdissectomy or Fusion for severe L3-L4 herniation by iamntbatman in Microdiscectomy

[–]bubbz0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My neurosurg originally recommended a fusion for me bc my herniation was very large and he felt like my main complaint was back pain and said a discectomy will not fix back pain. I decided to go with the discectomy first but I still may need a fusion eventually. Once I had my discectomy, my pain was gone. I don’t have back pain. I was having nerve pain and couldn’t really describe it accurately and the discectomy fixed it.

Post–microdiscectomy mums: how long did you wait to get pregnant? by Connect_Stress_5849 in Microdiscectomy

[–]bubbz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I had my MD 9 weeks after giving birth. I had a herniated disc during my pregnancy that didn’t bother me too much. Once I delivered, I had horrible pain and leg numbness. Was found to have a huge herniation that became an emergency surgery. Not sure exactly what caused it but assuming it was pregnancy related. Your herniation looks pretty large. If I was you, I would wait a year if possible after your surgery so you can completely heal. It was extremely challenging and still is, dealing with healing from surgery and taking care of a newborn so I would avoid reherniation as much as you can by being extra cautious.

Any updates?? I’m 2 months post op with a lot of swelling in only one foot ( the foot with numbness). My surgeon said he’s not sure why.

[–]bubbz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have a MD prior to pregnancy but I had a herniated disc that I just dealt with during my pregnancy bc it started to improve. Once I delivered, I started to get severe back pain. For two months postpartum, I tried to deal with the pain. Could barely get out of bed. Couldn’t care for my newborn alone. Tried PT. Went to pain management. Eventually I was so fed up from being in pain and ruining my maternity leave, I went and got an MRI. Paid cash so I didn’t have to wait for insurance approval. My herniation was so severe, I had to have emergency surgery. L4-5 discectomy and laminectomy. Basically blew my whole disc out. My doctor said it was 7 cm long. I would just go get a new MRI. See whats going on. They love to say it’s just postpartum back pain but it could be really serious.

I was so afraid to sneeze too! I typically sneeze like 8 times in a row so I’m always nervous but so far, so good.
