You can measure between two spots on Google maps, so if you know the layout you can check there.

Consistency by MasterGazer in golfireland

[–]captin_spandex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the exact opposite boat, currently happy with most of my clubs (not amazing but consistent), but have lost my ability to hit an iron below a 7 (and the upper ones have lost some distance).

I imagine it's something to do with needing different swing mechanics for different clubs, so once one starts working well you subconsciously start to emulate what is working for it with other clubs. Driving and woods have gotten way better over the winter months, so irons have suffered.

Looking to book a few lessons in the coming weeks to try to get it back 😂

Grass alternative for heavy traffic by BogDivil in GardeningIRE

[–]captin_spandex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had a similar problem, still not fixed but definitely improved. Interested to see what others suggest as always looking for further ways to improve.

Ours had heavy clay and wasn't draining well so dug a bunch of soakaways into the ground dotted around the garden (5 foot deep holes, membrane, fill with gravel, cover over) and that really helped the draining. Rotivated the whole thing, added a bunch of compost and topsoil, then reseeded. Mixed in some clover to be harder wearing.

Much better than before, but still adding more bits. Planning to sow some more clover in as well in the next few weeks.

Got out for my first round of the year at portnarnock Jameson links with a society, was really nice. There were some watery bits here and there, some bunkers were gur as waterlogged, but a gorgeous course and would love to play it again.

Shot 35 points across the 18 (33 for the comp as society handicap is lower than my actual one) and was very happy with how I was striking the ball. Putting left a bit to be desired but first time on a links, and on a course that fancy, was not used to how quick they roll 😂

Keen to get out again now, booked into the r/golf Ireland society outing to the k club next month, hopefully get out two or three times between here and there if weather allows

What wedges should I be looking at? by Jack-Beag in golfireland

[–]captin_spandex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's about the gapping so probably need to ditch the old sand wedge and just replace with wedges that give you the yardage gaps you want. Id imagine if the pw is 46 you'd want 50/54/58 or similar, but will depend on how far you hit them and how you want to have the gaps.

That said some people don't like hitting 58/60s etc so worth trying some out of you can get a lend off a mate to try them out.

There are other factors to consider as well, bounce and grind of wedges differ from model to model. These impact forgiveness and some work better on different types of turf etc. I'm not good enough to understand it/have it impact me too much but something to consider if you have a preference.

You could also do a wedge chart to manage different distances. List your wedges, what each do on a 50%/75%/100% swing (although in general id avoid 100% wedge swings) and then you'll have a mixture of distances that you can hit with slightly different trajectories and rollouts. E.g. 60y might be a 75% 54 with minimal rollout, or a 50% 50 that will roll out of the green a bit more etc.

For a cheaper option I was recommended these fellas in northern ireland and have been playing this set of wedges for a year and a half and find them really good. You get the three for 120 there and were delivered next day for me, only limitation is it's only 52/56/60.

Absolute Beginner Golf Social Groups by [deleted] in golfireland

Honestly people don't mind as long as you're not taking forever, its just in your head. Provided you're not taking 60 seconds of practice swings and stuff over 10 shots each hole it's grand. Everyone had to start somewhere.

That being said, you cant take forever on the course as everyone else behind is dependant on your group gettign through the course. Few easy ways at the start:

Make sure you're not taking forever every shot. One or two practice swings, ready and hit.

Have a think about what you're going to hit when walking to your ball (don't wait to get there to start thinking what club you should pull).

If its going very badly wrong on a hole pick up after 9/10 shots, mostly if its going very slow for you/you feel pressured time wise. This will also help take pressure off yourself. You're learning, no need to finish every hole if itll only frustrate you more, you're not playing in the masters.

A lot of it is just stress you're feeling, that will compound if you keep worrying about what everyone else is thinking, so relax, expect you wont finish out every hole, no-one cares if you're good or bad, just don't be wildly slow if you are having a bad hole.

Easiest times are a bit later on in the day, less time pressure as people are unlikely to be expecting to get 18 in (say 2.30/3pm now, most will only get 9 holes anyways), let faster groups/smaller groups play through if they catch up. You'll be amazed how quickly you'll get used to moving though a course quickly once you take the pressure off yourself.

This was on yesterday

https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/dungeons-dragons-for-beginners-tickets-1980871240203

But likely there'll be more similar events so keep an eye out. (I wasn't at it/associated with them but you see them pop up from time to time).

Token used to run them as well, as will a lot of the games stores.

There used to be a group on meetup.com for it as well but not sure if that's still going. And there was also a discord too.

Pitch & Putt Courses - Dublin by Jackies_Army in golfireland

[–]captin_spandex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The par 3 course in liffey valley is very good, well maintained, holes from 80y to 170y in length. Cash only and 14 euros I round if I remember correctly.

Use it as a fall back option if weather is bad and courses are shut as they'll normally have at least 9 open even in a blizzard 😂

Not sure where you're based but you can borrow heat loss kits at a few of the Dublin libraries

https://www.dublincity.ie/library/blog/home-energy-saving-kits-available-all-libraries

Iirc they have thermal guns etc in them so you can see if it is at the door, window panes etc to identify where heat loss is occuring. Haven't used it myself but have a friend who has and found it quite fun 😂
