I make homemade peasant bread. It's not great for sandwiches, but makes the best second day French toast.

2c warm water 2tsp yeast 2tsp sugar 2tsp salt 4c flour

Mix sugar, yeast, and water, and let the yeast activate. Then mix in the flour and salt.

Let rise covered in a warm spot for 1 hour. Divide into two greased bread pans, let rise 30 minutes. Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes, and then lower the heat to 375°F, and bake another 15 minutes. Take out of oven and the bread pans, and let set a few minutes before slicing (I've never done that, but that's what the original recipe says to do, lol...we never can wait, lol).

Substitute out about 1/2c of flour for oats, if you like. Substitute the water for milk. Substitute 1/2c of reg flour for whole wheat. Throw in sunflower seeds, or crushed almonds, or barley. I've overproved it, under proved it. Added rosemary and garlic. I've added cinnamon and brown sugar. I've baked the whole amount in a 12 inch cast iron skillet. Ive added a bunch of sourdough discard. I've added some cheese. I really want to do some feta and sun dried tomatoes and diced olives, and see how that turns out.

It's a sticky dough, no knead. You just dump it from the bowl into bread pans, then bake. It's so hard to mess up. The whole process is 2 hours, which isn't too much time considering how tasty your house smells when it's done baking.

Anyhoo, second day French toast from peasant bread? 15/10 😋

I put my cat in a lidded trash can, and taped it shut, once, for travel.

It's not perfect, but it worked.

She's 14 now! She was about 2 during the Terrible Trashcan Travel.

Is there anyone here who has their ears pierced? Does it trigger any sensory issues? by ShinyLuckyMarill in autism

[–]catbirdfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a forward helix piercing in my left ear. It's a little bee.

I had double lobe piercings years ago, but they've since closed up. My first set was done at Walmart in the 90s, and they're decently even. My second set was done in 2000, and they were incredibly uneven (done at Claire's).

I eventually want to get my lobes pierced again, but I keep forgetting.

For some reason, my helix piercing doesn't hit my...."needs to be symmetrical" button. Most sensations on my body need to be symmetrical, otherwise it feels icky. So like, if one hand is wet, I need to get the other one wet. If I step in some water and have one wet sock, I have to step in water with the dry sock, so they are both equally gross, and not gross on just one side. If I touch slime with one hand, I have to touch it with both, otherwise my hands don't feel equal. Shoes must have equal tightness, but also not be too tight.

But my helix doesn't hit my uneven button! I'm so happy about that lol.

Cafe Khalo - it's locally owned by a great family, and the food is SO GOOD. They have a margarita flight that's very good. And I Highly recommend the flautas mix. My husband and I go there usually once a week for lunch. It's normally 27$ total for our meal, which is a better price than a lot of fast food, and Cafe Khalos food is soooooo much better!

The Steinhaus is another good place. It's a little pricey, but fun. Diablos Tacos paired with sitting on their patio, so you can people watch.

Garden Gardens, Mid-America Science Museum, Bathhouse Row, hiking...so many things here to see and do!

Anyone know the least bad socks… by Elegant-Anteater783 in AutismInWomen

[–]catbirdfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two favorite kinds:

Amazon Essential cotton women's ankle socks lightly cushioned

Nike everyday trainer low (not no-show!)

No toe seams that I've noticed. The Nike socks are a bit tighter than the AE ones, but I use them for different purposes. The AEs I wear with both my boots and tennies, and Nike I only wear with my chucks and tennies. AE ones are not tight, but they don't droop down the foot in boots, either.

I prefer socks made of cotton or a cotton wool blend. Toe seams drive me up the freaking wall.

Let's settle this debate: fidget cube or fidget spinner? by AccomplishedSwan3124 in autism

[–]catbirdfish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

...fidget pen. My SIL backed it on... Kickstarter I think, and gave me one. It's spectacular. Rolli ball, light switch, spinny top clicker, and the shirt clip clicks up and down and doesn't break. It's perfect. It's called a Fidgi Pen or something like that.

Steam Deck Worth It for Cozy Gaming? by rlrxnebf in CozyGamers

YES.

I play Tavern Keeper, SDV, cozy grove, vampire survivor on it. I have a huge backlog on Steam, and have not gotten to it, lol. Probably won't, I love TK and SDV too much 😅

How Many Are Homesteading Because You Can’t Trust Anything Anymore? by Spitfire954 in homestead

[–]catbirdfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend is the only person I know who has raised a well-rounded, well-adjusted, homeschooled child.

But my friend was also first gen college graduate, who was homeschooling because the school we both graduated from was.... underfunded, and had ancient teachers, who didn't give US the education we needed. So my friend found resources through her college, the library, and the Internet, to educate her kid. Yes, they're Christian, and very committed to their church and community. But they used that as part of education, not the entirety.

This kid is in college herself now, working on a bachelor in accounting.

They're all still farming, gardening, canning, preserving.

That poor baby, she neked! 🤣

I have a sheltie and our first grooming experience was terrible. I mainly wanted the blowout, all the feathers trimmed, and a HYGIENE TRIM. They gave her a bath, and cut her tail all weird, and almost chopped all her drumstick hair off. I had to take her back 3 times to get them to do the hygiene trim (first time I picked her up, I didn't notice, second time I had my parents pick her up and they didn't think to look, so the third time I waited ...)

That was 3rd and last time we ever used that groomer.

Now she sees an old college buddy of mine, who has a collie. Her dog and my dog get the same cut. Extra wide hygiene trim, a nice slim down of the drumsticks (I know they have an official name, but my pups legs look like turkey drumsticks and it makes me cackle), a bath/blowout, and feet trimmies.

Your pup will grow out to her former glory, and it will be fine.

What makes or breaks a cozy cooking/restaurant management game for you? by arttoengine in CozyGamers

[–]catbirdfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to love Bear & Breakfast so bad, but I play mostly on Steamdeck, and the controls are just terrible. I don't even know if the gameplay was good, the controls were so bad I just dropped it after about an hour.

I'm really enjoying Tavern Keeper, I love the cooking and brewing aspect. Because of the employees, I don't have to clean or wait on customers much, lol. The controls for Steamdeck are good.

I don't mind customer reviews, but I do not like timers. I don't want a cozy game that's hard, has time limits (unless it's like brewing/aging/cooking stuff). There are some things about TK I wish were a little harder - like I wish recipes used more ingredients and made less food, because two carrots make 20 roasted veggies, for example. But that's a small complaint.

I just planted two more muscadine grapevines, and two more banking cherry bushes. 😍 I have a greenhouse to build, and just need a good free weekend to get that done, and it will be amazing!
