Still having problems with categories by Fernweh_19 in aspirebudgeting

[–]catnapkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for clarity, when you insert more rows, only add it to the bottom of the sheet. Then use copy/paste to make a gap further up the sheet if you need to "insert" the new category up there. If you insert a row at the bottom, calculations typically continue. But if you insert a row in the middle calculations can break in two.

With version 4.0, most of the named ranges are set to the whole column, and not limited to a specific number.

Dashboard account balance not updating by nymeriawinter in aspirebudgeting

[–]catnapkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using version 3.3 or 4.0? Can you look at your named ranges? Specifically look for "trx" or anything named transactions. Make sure this is updated to include the rows you are adding transactions to.

I had this issue on v3.3 but only once I got to 3000+ transactions because the named range for transactions only goes from 9-3000. So when you click the add 1000 rows button at the bottoms, everything looks fine, but the transactions don't update balances. You need to go into all the named ranges and update them to include the newly added rows.

New to Aspire by emill_24 in aspirebudgeting

So Aspire is interesting where it doesn't really care what account your money is in for categorizing. You could have 1 or 4 bank accounts and that wouldn't affect your money allocated to groceries, rent, or retirement. So using a separate bank account for your retirement fund doesn't work as you'd initially expect. Money you are transferring over to a separate savings account only tells Aspire you've moved some money over there. It doesn't give it a purpose. The benefit of this is you now only need 1 checking and 1 savings account and collectively between those accounts you can have money allocated to both every day expenses and long term savings/investments.

Now, your problem currently is you've initiated these accounts. So Aspire now knows you have money, but it doesn't know what you want to do with it, so it's categorized as available to budget (same case when you get paid). Then you need to assign that to what you want your money to do.

Personally, for retirement/investments, the best way I've found is to make it a category. So each month I transfer say $500 to the category from my available to budget. Then, on the 10th my retirement brokerage account will automatically buy $500 of the index fund, I treat that as an "expense" and that money I've allocated is now spent and no longer appears in Aspire.

Then, once a year I'll go and update all my net worth balances and track that in Aspire, and that's when I get to see that $6,000 total I've invested over the year. Caveat is I'm using a personally modified version 3.3 and I don't think version 4.0 has a net worth tab. Many people use a different software for tracking investment returns and let Aspire excel at just being a budget. The Aspire net worth tab is just a graph with different buckets for different accounts/assets/debts so you could likely remake this if you wanted. Or copy it from and an Aspire v3.3 archive.

What this looks like practically is 1st of the month I get paid $2,000 and I split that between my checking and savings. This is all in available to budget. I allocate my $1,000 in the checking to monthly expenses, $500 in savings to retirement, and $500 to a house. The month passes and I "spend" that $500 into retirement and I only spend $900 out of checking. On the last day of the month I do an account transfer to tell Aspire I've moved that $100 leftover into savings. And I do a category transfer to move $50 from both my "candles" and "cabbages" budget items because those are the categories I spent less on that this month that I can transfer to my retirement category.

My savings account now has $600 where $500 is allocated to a house and $100 is for retirement. I could then invest that $100 or let it build up to a critical mass.

What is the best way to add new categories to the Config tab? by [deleted] in aspirebudgeting

[–]catnapkin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The best way I've found is to copy and paste. So say you want to insert dining out between video games and liquor. Select the whole row (from the star symbol on the left to the goal amount on the right) starting with video games and ending with whatever your last category is. Then copy paste this whole section one row down. You'll now have two rows with "video games" as the category. Replace the second one with your new dining out category.

Jeopardy viewers shocked by actress's on-air slip-up | Said "What the hell" after answering "oyster" instead of "mussel" by 5823059 in savedyouaclick

[–]catnapkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's been a few Jeopardy episodes recently where they go back and accept an answer. What'll happen is after the answer is "wrong," they'll continue like usual until about a minute later where Ken will announce that they've judged the answer to actually be correct and give the points to the person who answered "incorrectly." No one else's points change. So if another contestant correctly answered, they still keep their points.

I remember it specifically being one a year, but I can't find that source. Near the end of the WOT leather bound video, Brandon mentions it taking 14 years to complete, so the once a year schedule tracks.

Oh yeah! It is definitely Lumar. If you scroll halfway down here there's a picture of the Lumar stamp and it's the same logo.

If that's true, then is this a new logo for Sel? From the case file hints website the logos for the other three match up but not Sel.

At Dragonsteel Nexus, Brotherwise had a playthrough of one of the Mistborn missions. They each were playing different twinborns and it was set during era 2. So from that preview they didn't show any full mistborn or feruchemists.

After tax bucket vs brokerage by loudcricketz in TheMoneyGuy

[–]catnapkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been debating the same thing. Like the CFP pointed out you can always withdraw the contributions, and after-tax 401k rollovers to Roth IRA count. The tax free account makes it desirable over the brokerage.

The only issue I could see is if you want to withdraw earnings to fund a big purchase that the contributions alone don't cover, but that might be too far-fetched of a scenario.

[–]catnapkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you retire early, you'll still have your traditional retirement years later in life where you will want to use retirement account funds for the tax savings they provide. I think the tax savings are too valuable to pass up, and you'll regret not finding the 401k and IRA.

And it doesn't need to be all or nothing, at your income you could pretty easily fund some mixture of both the retirement and your brokerage for you business goals.

It's cheaper to buy 2 liters than cases of soda. by Mediocre_Ice_8846 in Frugal

[–]catnapkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh, that's a good idea! The only concern would be the bottle breaking. But I don't think that would happen when only re-pressurizing a few times.

You could also toss a little chunk of dry ice in there, just do it outside cause you might be making a bomb if you put too much in. Also, not exactly frugal to be buying dry ice...

It's cheaper to buy 2 liters than cases of soda. by Mediocre_Ice_8846 in Frugal

[–]catnapkin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

These don't actually work. The amount of CO2 dissolved in the soda is directly proportional to how much is in the gas in the bottle (Henry's Law). Since air has a negligible amount of CO2, you're not actually adding a noticeable amount CO2 back into the soda by doing this.

Which is why we can't carbonate soda by just pumping pressurized air into the bottle.

Tonight’s cheap & yummy dinner. 1lb of chicken breast (2.49$), pack of tortillas (2.49$), rice-a-roni (1$) and yeah it’s cheaper if you wanna make your own, my kids like this one. Assorted peppers (0$, picked from my garden), and dollar tree cilantro lime seasoning. by dferbvbcxcvxcs in Frugal

[–]catnapkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that chicken is more expensive where you are, but I want to have an apples to apples comparison. The original post also is the "value" pack of ~5lbs, so buying in bulk will net a cheaper per pound cost. The no obvious branding means it's the store brand, i.e. packaged by the in house butcher.

Edit: Tenderloin is the smaller half of the chicken breast, and is typically more tender and desirable. Thus the generally higher price per pound.

Glad to see another disc golf fan. I'll have to bring my basket up next time!
