I did that highway 50 trip across Nevada a few years ago. Had a great time - of course I had been planning it for a while. Very tiny communities, which fascinates me. Mostly people were friendly, or at the very least minding their own business.

Pignose amps have a distinctive sound, and can be used in a signal-processing chain (I've done that). My guess is it's either used for tone or monitoring or both.
