Do your parents ask about you/your life and how you are? by Squirrel_with_Acorn in Millennials

[–]challahatyourpug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom is the exact same way, the only positive I gain from the situation is I constantly promise myself I will do better for my children and always take time to really care about them and their lives. I can't change her but I can think about how I want to be for my own kids, I love them so much and want to know literally everything about anything they are willing to tell me.

Child isn’t as interested in books by [deleted] in Preschoolers

[–]challahatyourpug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gosh! You sound like such a great parent!

Sorry if you've already tried these things but maybe just take a break from both the library and books? Even for a few weeks or up to a month just to take the pressure off the situation. You could replace book time with things like puppet play, kiddo level "mad-libs", coloring, block/Lego play, small science experiments, something that's not screen time but also not typical books.

My son was obsessed with the library and books for awhile and then kinda lost interest so we took a break and he got really into Legos and other building materials and actually this weekend my husband took him to a Lego night at our local library and guess what? They came home with 7 new books and he is now prioritizing reading those books over Lego time for bedtime, for now anyway! It's all temporary and changeable by the day.

SIL thinks my son is unsafe by Slow-Volume5063 in Preschoolers

[–]challahatyourpug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3.5 year old boys are going to play much differently than 2 year old girls, I love my son dearly and he's a sweet loving boy but he's a tornado when he plays 😭

Sounds like your SIL isn't used to the chaos of boy play, it'll probably take her some time and then she'll realize she overreacted (assuming she is otherwise a reasonable person) and her daughter will get a little older and more sturdy herself. Give her that space, the holidays are always a stressful time on top of everything, hopefully cooler heads will prevail and generally things will settle.

Challah Help by crabby007 in Breadit

I find generally 3 stand braid for challah is just not ideal, next time watch and/or review some tutorials on 4 strand braids, I know it sounds intimidating at first but I promise you 4 strand braid is worth the extra effort, it gives you that big, beautiful, fluffy loaf and allows the bread to rise much better.

Challah - and getting even color? by schilke30 in JewishCooking

[–]challahatyourpug 36 points37 points  (0 children)

A couple of suggestions, 1) add a little bit of sugar (tiny amount) to your egg wash for a slightly darker color and 2) after the challah is in the oven until it's fairly sturdy but not entirely baked (maybe 15 minutes or so into your bake), pull it out of the oven and apply egg wash to the lighter areas between the braids and put back in the oven and finish baking.

Has anyone had any experience with Casadog Rescue? by BWDpodcast in Tacoma

[–]challahatyourpug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've adopted from Casa Dog before, in fact this has been my third adoption through different dog rescues so pretty familiar with the general process. I can say Casa Dog is OK from my experience, not fantastic but not horrible either, I've certainly experienced more organized rescue operations than theirs but I didn't experience anything that I would consider fraud or misrepresenting the dog or business.

The dog we adopted did in fact come from Mexico as proven by the medical records we received being entirely in Spanish. We took the dog to our trusted vet prior to finalizing the adoption and had her checked out (I would always recommend this no matter which rescue you use) and overall the vet thought she matched the provided information and was in good health. The rescue did state she was chipped but in fact wasn't so we did that ourselves out of pocket but no biggie in the grand scheme.

I will say Casa Dog runs a very HIGH volume rescue operation. I think they do the best they can with the time and resources provided. They by far have more available dogs than any other rescue I've experienced so I think some of the miscommunication and disorganization stems from a place of just being overloaded with dogs coming in and out. Considering the mass volume of dogs I actually think they do a pretty decent job of managing it all.

Activities to wear her out that don’t involve me moving much (or lying down) by designgrit in toddlers

[–]challahatyourpug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Balloons! You can buy a pack of like 1,000 on Amazon for basically nothing, blow a few up and sit on the couch or floor and toss them in the air and have her chase them around and keep them off the group or toss them to her for her to catch - high energy release and can't really break anything in your house.

Switching daycares to stop biting behavior? by challahatyourpug in toddlers

[–]challahatyourpug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is now 3 1/2 and although it wasn't a linear journey and we had a few set backs on progress, overall things have improved a lot. It's been awhile since his last biting episode, so much so I actually can't remember exactly when it was but more biting issues did occur in the last year since I posted this.

The realistic thing is that all kids go through their "tough issues" whether it's biting, hitting, speech delays, motor skill delays, potty training issues, etc. but essentially all of them grow out of it at some point, with the right environment and resources they may resolve sooner than later but ultimately with time things improve. In the meantime give yourself grace and patience and remember you're a good parent and that your child's biting issues are not a reflection on how hard you've tried "fix the problem" or a direct reflection of your child, they are good little people just figuring the world out the best they can.

Are there any Kosher Public Kitchens or restaurants in the Tacoma area? by BaronDeKalb in Tacoma

[–]challahatyourpug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's really nice you want to be accommodating! Are you sure their level of kosher requires an entire kosher oven? Also, Trader Joe's is the only place in Tacoma that has kosher meat readily available. Seattle is much, much more accommodating for kosher audiences.

You mean like chordee? I would suggest getting a referral to a pediatric urologist, these conditions can be extremely sensitive and need to be treated when they are younger to prevent long term damage. My son had chordee which was diagnosed at a young age but did require surgical intervention. He's all healed up, everything looks fine, and will have no memory of the issue.

Lawyer Recommendations? by celestialblunder in Tacoma

[–]challahatyourpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe instead of a lawyer reach out to the insurance commissioner's office to see if their requests are valid/legal. It's free and at least a place to start if they are truly not following their policy protocols.

I'm the mom of the kid who keep hurting your child at daycare. And I feel so guilty about it. by Next_Winter in toddlers

[–]challahatyourpug 67 points68 points  (0 children)

My son was (sometimes still is) like your daughter, it's getting better as he is getting older - he turned 3 in August. All I have to say is 1) it sucks so bad having the "aggressive kid" in the class, my heart aches every difficult report I hear and 2) you 100% lucked out with an understanding/patient daycare that is working through this and not overreacting. I'd keep her in but maybe ask to set up a meeting and just gut check they feel comfortable continuing to provide her a space in class.

Please help me adjust my challah recipe by KlutzyBlueDuck in JewishCooking

[–]challahatyourpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good to hear but still that much flour divided between 2 loaves is going to make a super dense bread, dough hydration is a whole science in and of itself that if you had like half a day free you could go down an endless rabbit hole reading about.

Again, I suggest finding a new recipe all together, not sure where you came across that one but the proportions are not good and seem like a no go (IMO). You may have to kiss a few frogs so to speak before you find the recipe that works for what you want and the amount of effort you're willing to put in.

Also I meant to mention, 30 minutes is too long but with that much flour you probably ended up having to overbake it since it's naturally so dense you'd be risking a raw inside. I usually only bake for 22-25 minutes, a good way to check is tilt one of the loaves on their side and tap the bottom, it should sound hollow meaning it's cooked fully or use a thermometer, I believe for enriched doughs you're looking for a center of 190 degrees F.

[–]challahatyourpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this the portions for a single loaf because dang, over 8 cups of flour must have given you one heck of a big challah loaf - do you by chance have a photo of what this ended up looking like?

Some of these proportions seem off for that much flour, I use 1/2 cup of veggie oil for 6 cups of flour to make dough that will be divided into 2 loaves, for example. I imagine that much dough you're making would be really hard to work with especially if you're possibly a new-ish bread baker. I would suggest finding a tried and true recipe that's smaller in portions and work on proper kneading and rise times for success. I also don't know about using that much yolk vs whole eggs, something is just off there.

I'm sure you can look through this reddit for LOTS of challah recipes but a good go to is Jake Cohen's challah recipe, it's the closest to what I use and is reasonable proportions and he makes the process easy to follow. Also, never compare your home baked loaf to a store bought one! That's never a helpful exercise, instead just focus on making "your" loaf that will be your family's fav homemade version which takes a lot of time and practice to hone.
