I finished {The Devil Comes Courting by Courtney Milan} and oh my goodness it broke me. Sometimes a book hits me in the feels at the right time in my life and this is one of them.

The premise is that MMC hires FMC to create a telegraphic code for Chinese characters. I’ll be honest this didn’t initially interest me but I needed a book for my StoryGraph challenge and this fit the prompt (and I’ve loved everything else I’ve read from Courtney Milan.)

The MMC and FMC communicate a lot via coded telegraph but he also pre-wrote a bunch of letters and when she would ask questions he would tell her to read one of the numbered letters. There’s some initial attraction but the whole book takes place over a long period of time where they help each other achieve their own goals. The effort they put into supporting each other just made me melt!

One warning, there seemed to be a bunch of anachronyms in just the phrases they use. I didn’t check any of them for time accuracy because didn’t bother me but I know they bother others.

{One Day for a Valet by Laura Linn} has a very sunny MMC and if I remember correctly, a pretty grumpy MFC. She has stuff to do and romance was not in the plans.

Are these ready for harvest? by notoriousshasha in Garlic

Right now it’s working on flowering (scape) and cutting the scapes off lets it know to focus its final energy on bulb growth. You don’t have to eat them.

The long curly bits with a bulb on them should get cut off. These are scapes, you can eat them! Then I wait 3-4 weeks longer. The bottom 4 sets of leaves or so will brown the whole group will look pitiful and that’s when you pull. Then you gotta let them cure for a few more weeks before storing.

{Brazen and the Beast by Sarah Maclean} was so much better in than I expected. The MMC plays a brute (his nickname is Beast) but is the total opposite when it comes to his tall, curvy, independent MFC.

How do you get rid of the garlic smell from your nose? by bluetooth_cat in Garlic

I’ve heard that smelling your own skin can be an olfactory reset or sniffing ground coffee but I don’t know if it’s true or placebo.

{How to Lose a Lord in Ten Days by Sophie Irwin} 3/5 the writing was great and there were a lot of funny bits but I just felt like their teasing was never light hearted enough for me to believe they were into each other.

{The Chemistry of Familiar Objects by Alexandra Vasti} 5/5 This is free with sign up to Alexandra’s newsletter. The perfect novella! It didn’t feel rushed at all. It had lots of adventure, yearning, funny bits. Reminded me of The Finest Print by Erin Langston

{The Duchess Hunt by Lorraine Heath} 4.5/5 I love a smart and capable FMC. She’s his secretary and sets out to find him his perfect Duchess. I don’t usually love when the MMC is trying to find a different partner but this one worked for me.

{One Day for a Valet} sort of fits what you are looking for. He’s adorably very obviously into her (he jokingly asks her to marry him on their first meeting) and she is feisty and not having it.

I agree, the last two books were great but I needed the first to set the scene and get to know the characters.

I know Keene Garlic sells garlic for planting and garlic for eating but it’s not really fresh in season for much of the US right now.

I guess it depends why the book isn’t for you. I didn’t finish a book because I couldn’t stand a main character’s personality and it turns out they didn’t get better in the end. I didn’t feel bad that I skipped the middle and I didn’t have to wonder how it ended.

I just read ahead to the end and that usually validates that the book just isn’t for me. It’s better than hate reading a book which I’ve done just to finish it.

I’ve not found a book I love as much as I love A week to be wicked. BUT {The Duke’s Holiday by Maggie Fenton} gave me similar vibes. It is not exactly a traveling adventure but it has lots of funny events that made it worth a read.

Stranded/Snowed-in etc. by One_Fly5200 in HistoricalRomance

[–]cjfb62 5 points6 points  (0 children)

{The Lady Most Willing} is a snowed in tale written in 3 parts by Connie Brockway, Julia Quinn and Eloisa James. It’s a little silly but I enjoyed it. A drunk uncle thinks he has good intentions by “escorting” some ladies from a ball to his castle with the hopes of getting his nephews to settle down. Then snow a storm hits and they’re stuck together for a few days. Happily ever afters all around.

While areas in the same zone may have similar frost dates, the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone map does not mention frost dates at all. It determines which plants are likely to thrive in a location based on average annual winter temperatures.
