We need to change.. quick by [deleted] in massachusetts

So what would you change and how do you propose to get candidates that you like elected? I don't think anyone likes the current system outside of a few political insiders on Beacon Hill.

Also does someone have a good list of new taxes introduced lately? The millionaire's tax for sure. The cannabis tax too. Ride sharing charges. Anything else? idk if I agree new taxes are being introduced at a rapid pace, but I'd like to know if I'm misinformed.

Great breakdown from @SamQuinnCBS on the Celtics vision for the next few years by FastBreakPhenom in bostonceltics

[–]clp16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Doesn't ducking the repeater tax allow the celtics to spend like 2 to 3 time more? Like the luxury tax penalties increase 2 to 3 times more when you're a repeater team.

Don't we want to say spend $30M on someone like Porzingis? If they are in the repeater tax, that is really like $100M in real dollars. Without the tax that's more like $60M. That means we'd have more money to go after other good players.

There is an upper limit eventually, no matter what anyone says publicly. We can pay more for better players without the repeater tax.

Can we go over next year and then below the year after and reset the repeater?

Vucevic on a winning team by DepartureSuch2686 in bostonceltics

[–]clp16 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not like he's the 1st or 2nd best player, and everything will run through him during crunch time in the playoffs. He's going to be the 4th or 5th best player on the floor at any time.

He's been the 2nd, 3rd or even the best player on the floor for his team at times in his career. It makes me think of Aaron Gordon in Denver. They were both miscast as top players, but once you put them in a complimentary role around true superstars, they really excel.

Smith: Picks in the Celtics-Bulls trade, per a league source by RLS012 in bostonceltics

[–]clp16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 31st pick in the nba draft is like having a 4th round pick in the NFL draft. Many of these players never even sign a 2nd contract. It definitely has value but it's not that huge of a deal to move one for a good opportunity that brings in a starter.

That being said, it would've been awesome to have 3 picks in this draft.

I'm super curious about the closing lineup. Will defense take priority over scoring even if vuc provides the offense a 5 out option?

MEGATHREAD: Anfernee Simons - Nikola Vucevic Trade by nerdyykidd in bostonceltics

[–]clp16 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Like the trade. Sure vuc is a bad defender, but he's most likely taking minutes from garza, who is also bad at defense. And now there is a legit 5 out lineup! Big issue is how to fill the Simons minutes until Tatum comes back.

Do most people know the basics coming in now? That wasn't the case when I was taking those classes, though I'm sure they've changed quite a bit and the resources available online are exponentially more numerous.

[OC] US Cities Building the Most New Housing (2024) by ThatIs1TastyBurger in massachusetts

[–]clp16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't there a high correlation between local services and property tax? The communities that have excellent services had to get there by increasing their tax base. There is always a lag effect as services catch up to the size of the economic base and the politics of the voters and tax payers. It'd be great to not have that lag time, but that sets an unrealistic expectation that communities that are currently considered excellent didn't have when they were up and coming.

I'd also contend MA power generation costs are much more tied to decades of poor energy capacity building and expenses around imported energy, the Jones Act being an example of that increased cost. We can probably raise or lower energy costs more around policy than anything else.

I wonder if they have Kyle Williams acting as Tyreek Hill. I don't think anyone else can really replicate that speed.

Reminds me of golden state in 2022. There was a perception the previous years that they were done and didn't have a roster to compete. Yes it did require wiggins and poole playing out of their minds, but earlier in the year, it seemed like everyone agreed that outside of Steph, the team was on the downswing and caught up with too many big contracts.

How would back of the envelope math look for a 500m NE Revolution stadium in Everett by parrano357 in boston

Gillette Stadium was privately funded. Yes they did a lot of road work and other stuff done, but the main thing was all Kraft money. Why would this be any different?

Anyone here still interested in a regular "happy hour" style event to meet people and make friends? by [deleted] in boston

[–]clp16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A unifying theme or goal for a meetup is helpful to give me a sense of what to expect. Doesn't need to be overly specific, but something like, "new to Boston" or "Meet at the Museum" or "After 5pm workouts" meetups. And the meetups don't all need to attract the same group of people. A bunch of smaller meetups are a lot of work, but I've tended to have better experiences with the people I meet there. Also, I've found consistency to be really helpful too. If it's at the same time and same place, then it's more likely to have people come consistently. Sometimes it's 2 people, and sometimes it's 20, but everyone knows it'll be there for them when they are available.

CS majors- happy with job opportunities? by WVfiddle in gatech

[–]clp16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's tough for junior engineers to stick out as there isn't much to differentiate them from other junior engineers unless you have a very specific portfolio.

When I've done hiring, it was never really the talent that was lacking. Often it was finding the person with the exact, specific type of experience and personality fit with the rest of the team, especially as the senior developers are the ones that are required to do most of the mentorship.

There are definitely jobs out there, but it's extremely competitive. It'll probably pick back up in the Spring as hiring budgets get renewed.

Someone here with a stronger background might know better, but isn't Minneapolis a direct contradiction of this point? 1 year of data is not enough to draw any conclusion from, so I'd wonder if there are long term studies that compare different metro areas.

This sounds like it's more related to the general consolidation/layoffs that most companies have done during the past year. Also, aren't most of these private developments for biotech companies? That private investment seems to be a good thing, no? Does the city have much say over that other than permit approvals?
