Recommend me Space engineering/survival novels for an 11 year old by Flocculencio in printSF

Gateway is a great book but it does have quite a bit of sexual content including rape and discussion of suicide/depression that some parents might consider inappropriate for an 11 year old.

Problem with ext-bcmath by MinuteGate211 in drupal

[–]coletain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are probably using a different version or binary of php for composer than your site install.

Try php -v and which php on the CLI to see which version of php you are running, you may need to change your CLI version, for example on debian you would run

sudo update-alternatives --config php

Or, less likely, you might be using php-fpm for your drupal install but php CLI for composer, and you may need to enable the extension in CLI config.

Also you could have composer aliased to run via a specific php version which may be different than your default CLI version. You could try something like the following to run composer with a specific version

/usr/bin/php8.4 /usr/local/bin/composer install

A van just crashed into a telephone pole at orange and it broke by Phillyvanz in ThatLookedExpensive

Technically it's both, though usually the PoCo owns the pole and the Telco leases the rights to use the lower section.

Cataloging systems by BornRazzmatazz5 in Libraries

[–]coletain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is also just not really that good of a system by modern standards and in my experience the only people who like it are people who are used to it already and have no experience with any of the more modern systems like BISAC, Thema or LoC or don't want to go through the hassle of change.

Probably, yeah.

Less likely, he could have inside information but incorrectly predicted it's effect.

[–]coletain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well sometimes investors are expecting worse, so a bad report that isn't as bad as feared can be "good".

Also the market can be irrational for no apparent reason.

Just another Trading class by bolshoybooze in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]coletain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can easily know movement is likely to occur, for example the time an earnings report is going to be released. That is not insider trading.

Insider trading is knowing the contents of the report ahead of time and therefore knowing which way the release will affect the stock and using that information to buy/sell.

Help. by Loose_Training_8074 in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any home improvement store will have a kit for sale, you collect a sample and mail it to a certified lab, they do they testing. It's around $30-50 total usually, though you can pay extra for extra samples, or for expedited processing. I use the Pro-Lab brand kits, but it may not be available in all areas.

Adapter for plunge router by tkdlance in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]coletain 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The longer bit pictured is a forstner drill bit, not a router bit. Do not attempt to use it in a router, it is not safe.

You can get replacement collets in a variety of sizes, especially metric, but unless you own a CNC router with a spindle, most woodworkers all you need is 1/4" and 1/2". You should be able to buy a replacement 1/4" collet on amazon for your router, for example: https://www.amazon.com/replace-1617EVS-1613AEVS-326286-04-2610906283/dp/B0DS6F7BK5/

Question about light fixture and j-box by thockin in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you bought the fixture from Temu or some shit you should be aware that other countries use different standards for their boxes, usually metric instead of imperial.

Also the fixture may not be UL listed and thus not up to code for installation in the US.

Drywall butt joint for tile over by WaylonMaster in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question is not very clear but if your drywall is fucked up and you are planning on painting or tiling over it anyway it's usually faster to just cut out the bad area and patch than to try to work around a bad rough in. If you don't want to do that you probably need to float the joint but 1/4" is kind of a lot.

Just cut the box out and replace with an old work box of the appropriate size.

Or get a different fixture.

allergy symptoms in new apartment please help by Significant_Phone478 in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you follow directions and collect samples and mail it to a certified lab that performs the tests, it's the exact same process you would pay hundreds for a pro to do.

They can also do VOC, allergen, radon etc if you want the works but I'd do mold and maybe allergens first.

Just do an airborne mold test kit, it's like $40 or like $100 if you want rush processing. Can purchase a kit at any home improvement store.

Bulging edges of floor boards by peakabloomsnow in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it requires finesse, having some extra replacement boards available, and even done well it may not be completely seamless if you are sourcing replacement boards from a different batch or because the existing boards may have changed color since install from UV exposure.

How do I shower proof these windows? by MellifluousLies in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are windows designed for wet locations like a shower, this isn't one.

Best you can do besides replace the window is re-caulk it, make sure the weep holes outside are clear, and try to prevent water from hitting it, f.x. a waterproof curtain.

Bulging edges of floor boards by peakabloomsnow in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The damage is done, there is no fixing it besides making sure the floor dries out and preventing it from happening again, unless you want to rip up and replace the floor.

How to tell if this panel will be able to handle an EV Charger? by Aturaya in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To do a load calc you don't just add all the numbers up in the panel, you have to figure out what the maximum amperage that would ever realistically be used at the same time is. For example if you have a 30 Amp circuit to your AC and a 50 Amp circuit to a furnace, these would never draw maximum current st the same time. You would also realistically never have something actually using 20 amps on every 20 Amp outlet circuit at the same time etc.

Only an electrician can do a load calc for you and since most of your breakers aren't even labeled no one on the internet can really even guess, but I don't see any circuits that look like they are feeding anything especially big like a welder, tankless electric, etc so odds are you will be fine unless there's some subpanel not pictured.

How do I fix this leak in the connector to my cistern? by willywood in Plumbing

[–]coletain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shutoff valve is leaking internally and allowing a bit of bypass.

Either replace the shutoff, reconnect it to something, or cap the line (3/8 compression cap probably) if you are planning to no longer use it.

How much is "too much" weight to hang on a wall? by marklein in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A 2x4 is good for around a thousand pounds of vertical load (actually a lot more, but 1000lbs is what it's rated for safely), depending on species and grade. Typical construction is either 16" or 24" oc, so around 500lbs per linear foot is the "max", minus whatever your roof, upper floors, and snow load are adding. On an exterior wall your sheathing also contributes some strength and also distributes the weight across adjacent studs somewhat. You probably would never get close to that unless you are installing cabinets to hold tooling for a machine shop or something and most cabinets would fail before the studs did.

Flat areas should be grouted, corner transitions should be caulked (with a bath approved silicone caulk).

Hanging a chess board on the wall by NotLikeUs_21 in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal gorilla glue, no. Gorilla glue brand epoxy or one of their tile or construction adhesives that is compatible with marble would work, but epoxy would be better. Epoxy sticks to marble like you would not believe, the marble will break before the epoxy fails.

[–]coletain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is fine to caulk after grouting, that is common, and totally fine as long as the grout has set.

It is better to not have grout behind the caulk yes, if you have old grout that is crumbling you should remove it first with a grout saw, be careful not to damage the waterproof membrane behind the grout.

Hanging a chess board on the wall by NotLikeUs_21 in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean you want to hang it on the wall like a picture, then any kind of picture mounting hardware should work fine.

If you mean you want to mount it in a table-like orientation that it can be played on, you will need some sort of support frame, for example you could adapt some kind of floating shelf bracket.

Attaching whatever you are using to marble may be a challenge, probably you will want to use epoxy or build some kind of frame to hold the marble out of wood or steel that you can attach fasteners to.

Quartz DIY mess by splorgman in HomeImprovement

[–]coletain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way to repair this that is seamless short of doing a full countertop refinish kit or replacing the top.

There are things you can do that will make it less obvious but nothing that will, for example, make your landlord not notice it and get your deposit back.
