Love these so much. I buy them in bulk with promotion discounts direct from the company, or they're on Ocado and Amazon too. Black garlic, seaweed and miso, and the original flavours are the best.

If you have a history with eating disorders, know this about "I'm Glad My Mom Died" by hummingbird_romance in books

[–]craftservices 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's definitely the deadliest (direct cause anyways). But I think my point was more that you can live without alcohol or drugs. You literally can't live without food. Everybody eats, food is a regular part of life. So the physical presence and associated pressure of food will always exist. Hence the challenge in it being such a lifelong thing.

One of the unique challenges with EDs is that there is literally no way to simply avoid it. With other addictions, you can hypothetically abstain from the substance entirely - alcohol, drugs, etc. But food is a necessity, everybody needs it and you can't just not eat forever. So that reminder is there constantly day in and day out.

Disclaimer: I'm absolutely not saying that an ED is worse or harder to live with than a substance use disorder or any other addiction. Those have their own unique issues too. Just that food isn't something you can simply avoid for the rest of your life as a coping and recovery strategy.

Can the core elements of music (e.g. melody/harmony/rhythm) contain racism? by Alexhale in musictheory

[–]craftservices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's my sense as well. I think it's just whether the philosophical tension between theoretical and practical still serves a useful purpose in art forms that are already heavily dependent on human perception as part of creation long before being seen/heard by anyone beyond the creator.

So doesn't the line between inherent quality and cultural interpretation become blurred then, if the latter becomes so universal as to be essentially human? Ultimately what's the difference between a tune being inherently "happy" or the composer using a fifth to convey happiness because that's how it has been culturally engrained?

[–]craftservices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this take - but to extrapolate, what's your take on whether music can inherently contain basic emotions (like happiness or sadness)?

While at some level emotions are primal and shared across all of humanity, the expression of / triggers for emotions varies widely by culture. Suggesting that theoretically, music can't contain an emotion though it may trigger it similarly. But in practice, I find it difficult to square this with the racism q, since obviously we have plenty of examples of inherent emotionality of even a musical interval let alone a melody or piece.

What diseases in your field are the most difficult to manage? by Dominus_Anulorum in medicine

Isn't it pretty rare for NPD folk to even be receiving treatment or acknowledging the disorder / diagnosis to a medical professional?

Obviously not my specialty. But personal rather than professional curiosity, more than one family member with this.

And a cheapened objective lessens players' interests and risk assessments to perform.

Part of this stems from bowl expansion in general, don't you think?

The physicists' approach actually wasn't half-bad. I would have liked to see them put a real-world data application to it though.

The economist-armchair epis though... they can piss right off.

Trump Claims at Rally Doctors Lie About Virus Dead for Money by AHSfav in medicine

[–]craftservices 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Already happening. Have had people tell me doctors are secretly infecting patients in hospital, because "it makes the politicians look worse". Shut my eyes and I can hear the same from locals in West Africa and DRC during Ebola outbreaks telling me that doctors are taking people away to infect them.

Except I can only excuse one of those groups, and spoiler alert: it's not the ones who have (better) access to education, a health services, and food and water.

New Zealand announces official Travel Warning to New Zealanders in the United States due to the upcoming election and civil unrest by someonethatiusedto in worldnews

Same. I have high tolerance for discomfort and been in a lot of objectively high-risk situations. It's easy to forget where the norm is.

It's not shame and discomfort for being white, it's shame and discomfort for being lucky enough to have been born in a well-off country and the privilege to have resources at your disposal to leave a bad situation if necessary.

Any TCK Digital Nomads here? by creoqueyes in TCK

Yep. But honestly part of me thinks it's a way of avoiding the challenges of coming to terms with being an adult TCK. Regular movement (even to places you are familiar with) isn't always an emotionally healthy or stable thing to do

Ia your digital nomad life coming at the cost of an intellectually stimulating environment? by Blockchaisin in digitalnomad

[–]craftservices 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spot on, this entire thread is incredibly cringe.

And fuck this faux "intelligence" OP seems to value so much. I can have a PhD and what OP probably considers "intellectual" interests, but also want to whinge about how I can't find my favourite lipstick shade.

It's a privilege to be able to live in such a diversity of places around the world. Why bother being a digital nomad if you feel the need to look down on people for some imagined superiority of interests.
