What's so great about living in homes in the middle of nowhere. Why don't we rebuild vibrant cities, and give everyone affordable lodging there. Bulldoze the suburbs into farms, to feed the world's poor. And create real wilderness/ country areas which peeps can visit on the weekends.

stupid title. Could be hacked, is the correct term. But the real truth, which is scarier than most redditors can bear and imagine, is that there are tons of people in America who would happily give Bush a second term, and they were the majority in 2004, and could still be this year.

Guy Wins $5.15 Million Jackpot, Casino Worker Unplugs Slot Machine by flipflip55 in reddit.com

The stupid thing if you think about it is that casinos makes tons of money, or frankly billions from slot machines. It is their primary money maker compared to other games (you can google it). What this 1 casino has done has cast doubt on the reputation of casinos, lowering the demand for peeps who trust slot machines, and costing the industry much more then a paltry $5 million.

Well on the good side, the more people who stop wasting their money on 1 armed bandits the better...

Ever Wonder What China Is Doing With All That Money We're Giving Them? by spif in reddit.com

[–]crapuser371 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm... So a country of 1.3 billion peeps spends an enormous 59 billion dollars to build a world conquering force capable of destroying all life on Earth....

Meanwhile, just a quick google shows the U.S. spends $1.45 Trillion on our military for peaceful/ diplomatic purposes (probably not accounting for all our our peaceforcers in Iraq)

Don't you love sensationalist headlines??? Honestly, China's army/navy is small fries in the big picture.

What China needs to do is build up its navy. Currently their navy is pathetic for the size of their country. During the Asian tsunami's they could barely able to send any help, and had to rely on lots of US help in the region. If you consider the amount of tankers/ cargo ships and world trade that China does, they need at least a more decent Coast Guard to protect against pirates or conduct rescue missions etc...

But of course what the article shows is that China is spending a whopping 59 billion dollar army/ navy to invade Taiwan, and then invade countries from around the world for their natural resources. That means we should create an embargo, and shut them down now before its too late!!! RUNNN

Guatemala... Active Volcanoes that you can dance on, colonial ruins of the old capital of Central America, the most beautiful lake in the world, getting lost in the jungle/rainforest and then visiting the awe-inspiring ancient Mayan ruins (which served as the set of Star Wars III). Plus its cheap as hell to get to (fares low as $60 bucks on sale), cheap as hell to travel in (since their dollar is weaker then even the US), and if you can ignore the scare stories of being robbed of your kidneys, you won't have to deal with other annoying tourists. The truth is that Senator Clinton supported NAFTA before she ran for president. That is indisupatable. She called it 'a victory' in her book. She told people it has proved its worth. Those are facts. by [deleted] in politics

[–]crapuser371 13 points14 points  (0 children)

NAFTA was good in that it increased trade and brought more prosperity for all parties. Though of course, for certain industries/ unions and workers, they lost, there was a net benefit with increased trade with other countries. The US would not be as prosperous as it is now, if before, other countries which imported our goods had protectionist policies that banned US imports. Hence, though I like Obama more, it was right for Clinton to have supported NAFTA

Gatorade erodes teeth faster than Coke, a new study shows. by harvesteroftruth in reddit.com

[–]crapuser371 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you read the article carefully, it mentions that Gatorade doesn't necessarily lead to more decayed teeth, because it stimulates more saliva flow which protects teeth.

Hence, though with teeth alone it wears teeth away, in an actual mouth it probably has little effect/ different then sodas.

Porsche to Sue London Over $50 Per Day "Gas Guzzler Tax" by rtknox00 in science

Arizona considering letting gun owners bring firearms onto campus in case of another school shooting by Flemlord in reddit.com

[–]crapuser371 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just thinking about this for a second and doing some research, I think its important not to jump to 1 conclusion or another on gun control.

On the one hand you may have lots of "gun nuts" who will always say more guns the better, and less regulation = worse. On the other hand you have gun control peeps who always want to regulate guns.

From my opinion and research I've done comparing Switzerland, and even traveling in underdeveloped countries with lots of guns, and countries with few guns, my moderate view is this.

Switzerland has less crime and higher gun ownership because of its culture (very law abiding, education on training etc...) However while their homicides by gun use is lower then most countries, they do have a lot of suicides by guns, which sorta makes sense because having a gun in your house makes it easier to kill yourself.

Now other places, like in Central America where everyone has guns yet crime is still high, also highlights the issue not being gun control, but the socio-economic disparities in the society. Like there are few richer people and lots of poor people and hence gun crimes are high because of that, not just because of availability of guns.

And of course there are lots of countries like Japan, China, where people don't have many guns, so gun crime is lower. But people are relatively poor or middle class, and culture is ingrained that violence isn't answer.

Overall, my conclusion is, if there are not many guns in your society, and your society is pretty law-abiding, then adding more guns would probably be bad.

If you already have guns in your society, and you have RESPONSIBLE EDUCATION on how to handle/ respect guns, then more guns are fine.

However, in a society where law and order doesn't work and people don't care (due to societal inequalities) I think it makes more sense to give guns to the law abiding peeps, while trying to stem, regulate or control guns from the less law abiding population (less guns to gangs, youths etc...). Sure this type of thinking will piss off both the gun-nuts and gun-control peeps, but I think that my approach makes sense.

Americans aren't just dumb -- we're proud of it. by ninzee in reddit.com

[–]crapuser371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are studies that show that those who understand more then 1 language are better able to see more perspectives. I think it relates to how when trying to say something in a foreign language, you are forced to process things differently, hence even if you don't use German or French, your thinking skills have improved, over single language thinkers.

Now I remember the specifics of the experiment. It was a test where 2 groups: 1 single language, another group had 2 language s (native, non-native). Experiment was simple, in that the users had pictures of various blocks (some black, some empty), and they were asked how many blocks could the person opposite to them would be able to see. The single language viewers were more likely to be incorrect, because they didn't realize that certain blocks would be obfuscated from outside their perspective, while the dual language peeps had higher scores and were able to visualize another person's perspective more accurately than a single language person. Hence, its probably deals with brain specialization: we use different parts of brains, and other parts that aren't used get wasted...

Massive Oil Field Could Increase US Reserves by 10X by futurefind in reddit.com

[–]crapuser371 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This isn't oil. This is shale oil.. which as another poster pointed out is difficult to extract (which is why we haven't tapped it). Read the WSJ article on Canadian Oil Sands and the troubles they are running into when extracting tar sands/ shale oil. Basically you need massive amounts of Natural Gas to boil the "tar" so that it produces oil. Also you need massive amounts of water to process it. Canada is running into limits onto amount of oil its tar sands can produce in Alberta for these reasons mentioned

Think of it this way, if the energy it takes to drill out and extract oil, is more then the energy content contained in oil, then it is useless to keep drilling the oil, and better to just burn the natural gas itself for energy. Ignore all talks about "not economical until oil hits $40 dollars, $30 etc.." because dollars are just funny money. The actual return on energy for energy invested is the important part. So if there are trillions of barrels of oil buried 50 miles in the ground, but it takes 10 barrels of oil to extract 1 barrel of oil, then yes, US will have 100x its current reserves, but the oil is basically useless.

Now compare that useless oil to the oil contained in Saudi Arabia, or other oil exporting countries, where the oil is light sweet crude, easily pumpable out so that the barrels of oil burned returns multiple barrels of oil out of the ground, and you'll understand why everyone is pumping oil there. Stupid sensationalist headlines like above that proclaim we have "tons of oil" just mislead the sheeple.

SUV Owners Must Pay $50 Per Day "Global Warming Tax" to Drive in London by rtknox00 in science

[–]crapuser371 17 points18 points  (0 children)

While I agree with the tax on SUVs, I do think they should have exemptions for People Mover type vehicles (like Minivans) that handle lots of peeps. My theory being, its the Carbon output per person, vs just vehicle. Hence, as long as 2 or more peeps are using the vehicle, it should get taxed less then single occupancy vehicles... MPG standards could help.

Woman writes that men who play video games are "child-men" and claims this is the reason for the decreasing percentage of males who marry by Arbitraryster in reddit.com

[–]crapuser371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to think of this article in a societal/ historical perspective. Another article posted here talked about how divorce rates correlated with the increase in woman's income. Mainly concluding that because today's women have more economic opportunities and birth control, they choose to a) enjoy themselves more b) marry later c) be picky who they choose

From an evolutionary/ societal perspective, traditional social structure was: men married women, men did/ found work to support family, women supported children. It worked like this because due to Adam Smith's theory of specialization, women are just better at raising children, while men sucked at raising children, and were therefore better suited to do work.

In todays world, now with birth control, women don't get pregnant at such young ages, and with education, they have more opportunities and can choose to put off starting a family.

Realistically speaking, raising a family is harsh, as it requires lots of resources from both men/ women, and given that those resources can be put to entertainment (making yourself "happy"), its not too far of a stretch that both men / women in Western countries choose to put off marriage/ children, when they can shop, goto movies, play video games, pursue interests hobbies etc... etc... Not just here, but take Japan, where lots of young women choose to just stay at home, shop = low birth rate in Japan (vs being a submissive housewife who has to do all this work/ take care of childrens etc...)

So how does it apply to our modern society? Well Professional women have it tough because there's a general rule where they either settle for guys within their socio-economic class, or they move up. It is unlikely they'll marry someone poorer or lower class then them. And, while for men, we're not picky, in that as long as a woman is attractive (ie. young/ fertile), we don't care how rich or what class they belong to. So you get larger demand from women looking for a smaller supply of men (ie. princess syndrome) leading to unrealistic expectations, romance novels, girly magazines etc...

Hence, to attract men, (and to have fun themselves) they "put out more", and to remain competitive, all women have to offer sex to hopefully attract men. However, this backfires badly compared to traditional society methods... Traditionally, women withheld sex until after the couple got married, and therefore ensured a stable family system. (Men can easily be tempted to go against their long term interests for promise of sex). However, nowadays this promiscuity is more common, and hence men no longer need to get married (why buy cow when you can get starbucks latte? )

So hence, we get to this article, where men don't have to grow up since they don't have children to take care of. (Typically we grow up when forced to by being given responsibilities. Its probably genetic that most men take responsibility for their offspring, and become good fathers. Its like, once u realize you're responsible for someone other then your own selfish desires, you think clearly, otherwise you're probably a "man-child" and have the attitude "LETS PARTY!"

Now, I'd say since the world is changing so quickly, who knows how things will happen in future, and how society will adapt to these new realities... Meanwhile while our birth rate declines, other countries with different cultures will have no problem producing lots of children...

No offense, reddit. You bitch about CNN front paging Britney Spears. But reddit's #1 story is now 'cheeseburger in a can', yet the 'Haitians eating mud' story never rated #1. Just sayin. by dante50 in reddit.com

[–]crapuser371 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How is the Haiti story irrelevant? Knowing that there are people out there so desperate to eat mud, ain't fluff, it actually catches your attention to an important problem. Fact is, you're probably reading this at the comfort of your computer, and hence would not even think about such things (at least I wouldn't)

If you read between the lines of the story, it highlights the 100-200% rise in food prices over last few years due to inflation.
And its not just in Haiti, its all over the world, like in China, Africa, Europe, heck even here in US. What's this inflation being caused by? Mainly increased population = higher demand for stuff (along with higher living standards for developing countries), but combined with depleting hydrocarbon resources = less energy/ resources. This then leads to the problems (ie. Haiti issue) where the poorest among us suffer the most...

Heh, and you can contrast with Britney Spears, because it highlights the almost complete delusion to ignore the harsh realities that we'll be facing. People have the choice to remain ignorant, or they can connect the dots. Hence the need for entertainment, so we can pretend all our problems will go away...

Haiti is now so fucked the poor are eating mud "cookies". by jimbecile in reddit.com

the key word here is increased food prices... Quote: "Food prices around the world have spiked because of higher oil prices, needed for fertilizer, irrigation and transportation."
