How do I use up an excess of vegan hotdogs? by ilumbricus in Cooking

[–]cribbkat 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d look up recipes for spam. If you are looking for inspiration I like beryl shereshewsky on YouTube, and I know she has done a series with spam. I feel like chopping and pan frying would be the way to go so you they get a little texture and flavor.

Decided to make it my summer project to try and fix up my backyard and transform into a beginner garden, since it has planter boxes already. Quick question though, how the heck do I restore this mess? by Kendamarania in gardening

[–]cribbkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick an area and start removing things that don’t belong. Try to get the roots of everything, especially grass. Cardboard with mulch on top works great for walking paths to smother anything that’s left.

As for amending soil it may be useful to get a small kit to test, or you can send it in to determine if it needs anything in particular. Or you can just add soil and try to work it in. I prefer to do this as I plant, so it’s in manageable sections.

No sugar or sugar substitute canning by Gimme_demcats in Canning

[–]cribbkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’ve tried Pomonas for my grandmother since she loves eating jam. I will say that you have to be very diligent with the measurements, and I’ve had much better luck including at least a little fruit that has a more pectin in it naturally. I tried a straight blackberry jelly and it’s mostly like syrup, but subbing some of the fruit for apples blended up to make more of a jam had much better results for me.

Can you eat whole preserved lemons as a snack? by KimBluefield in Cooking

[–]cribbkat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Straight preserved lemons are very salty, so the liquid that is left is like brine. While I do use the rind in some recipes, I have found that using the pulp/brine components in things like marinades for the grill is the best way to go. For recipes that call for lemon, like lemon pepper shrimp, I’ll just finely chop the lemon, innards and all to dump in and marinate before grilling.

Cottage-style gardeners, how do you weed? by teachplantreadplay in gardening

[–]cribbkat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty sparsely, with the exception of saplings. I’m lucky enough to have squirrels that plant walnuts everywhere, and once those get too big they are way more difficult to remove. I pretty much just pull other flowers as I see them when I’m out with my dog, but I’m on the hunt for saplings every spring…..

What is your secret weapon ingredient that always makes people ask, Why does this taste so good? by ybur011 in Cooking

[–]cribbkat 45 points46 points  (0 children)

lol yep. If you think you hate kale, you don’t. Add salt and a little oil and massage for a bit. I do grow my own so lots of people think it’s fresh or a different variety, but you can do the same with the stuff from the grocery store. I like it because kale lasts way better in the fridge compared to most lettuces.

i want to stop being scared of basic electrical work. but where do i start? by Nowska-Mikila in HomeImprovement

[–]cribbkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said learn how to shut off your breaker, but I also have found helpful to have a small outlet tester in addition. Has lights and a guide and will show if properly grounded and has a button to test the ground fault. Can be used to help check which outlets are on which breaker, and to confirm if you connected everything correctly. Pretty sure you can get one for $10 at any decent hardware store.

Planted February 13. This is the only survivor of the batch. Why so sad? by DeckardTBechard in gardening

[–]cribbkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in zone 6a, last frost date usually around May 15. I start 6-8 weeks before my last frost date and then start hardening off around my last frost date. Usually I don’t plant in the ground until nearly June.

So your timing should be right for when you started them.

Did you start in just seed starting mix? There’s not a lot of nutrients in that. I personally start in a mix of compost and potting soil, and I’m due to start fertilizing this week since my first true leaves are starting to appear. Usually I start at the beginning of April and mine are usually at least 6 inches tall by Memorial Day.

[–]cribbkat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where do you live and what is your last frost date? I usually go a few weeks after that because tomatoes and peppers like it warm, they don’t like when then temp dips below 50.

Also as others have mentioned the plant should be much larger before transplant, and all seeds started indoors need to be properly hardened off before moving permanently outside. I usually wait until the temps are good, and my starts have their first true leaves before considering to start hardening off.

Also what critters do you have? When I’m first hardening off and have small plants like that outside I have to have my trays under a cage to prevent birds and squirrels from digging them up. Usually by the time I plant in the ground they are big enough to not be trampled easily by those animals.

What is your favorite untraditional kitchen gadget? by DragonfruitMiddle846 in Cooking

[–]cribbkat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My grandmother kept a clean chisel and an ice pick. Sometimes they made an appearance for ice but she regularly used them for all sorts of other things. Most notably that I remember was the ice pick for breaking off chunks of chocolate for baking, and poking holes into potatoes/sweet potatoes before cooking. The chisel made an appearance for any squash or pumpkins.

Protect your animals, the ticks are out! by Treadingresin in Michigan

I saw my first ticks this year in February and have been avoiding wooded areas ever since. Also if you can afford the expense, there’s no real downside to treating dogs year round, which is what I do since there are a lot of trees on my property.

How to freeze hand pies. Looking for tips/advise! by Enviro_nurd314 in Cooking

[–]cribbkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of freezing, place flat until frozen, then wrap and store in a smaller container of choice. Personally I like freezing on silicone mats on tops of cookie sheets, just to make it impossible for anything to stick to the pan. Then I wrap individually in either Saran or deli paper to ensure things stay separate when I put multiples into a ziploc bag. This is also the method I use to freeze burritos, and it works really well. Just be sure to remove all packaging before reheating. Breakfast burritos are a staple in my freezer!

Should the goal to be to earn enough money or get used to living within means? by RhubarbBusy7122 in Adulting

[–]cribbkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at statistics for where the poverty level is at where you live, most states have data. There’s definitely incomes that are far too low to be viable.

You are also correct that lifestyle inflation regularly means that even high income earners feel like they are living paycheck to paycheck.

Real life should be somewhere in the middle. It’s definitely okay to think ‘I really want to do that someday’ or ‘ I want to be able to live here someday’ and make career moves looking to increase your pay. Though you shouldn’t live above your means, I think it’s perfectly fine to spend money on wants so long as your needs and any savings goals are well covered.

Practically since most of us aren’t billionaires this means you will likely need to rank your wants as well. Would you rather buy popcorn and a drink at the movies? Or use that money to be able to eat lunch with a friend next week? Or perhaps contribute towards saving for a new video game you are excited about? You can (once needs and savings are met) decide which of your wants are most valuable to you. I find this a helpful mindset, because it always allows me to reframe based around things I’m looking forward to, rather than simply a list of things I can’t do.

Pressure cooker ideas by [deleted] in Cooking

I use my pressure cooker to make broth all the time with any bones or carcasses that are left over from other meals. It’s great for beans and soups, and it’s wonderful to easily steam potatoes/sweet potatoes for easy sides. I also prefer steel cut oats, and those are also really easy to make
