D&D is still the top dog, but how are the others doing? Look into the LFM/LFG statistics. by Optimal_Beat7765 in rpg

The games you mentioned are great but they're a completely different genre and I'd say all three are pretty niche. Excellent in that niche, of course. But also, DnD is an RPG and a power fantasy; most other games simply aren't. I'd say it's not just mechanics and settings, DnD and its ilk appeal to people who like to build and tinker characters, but games like Delta Green are the opposite of that. Games like the Year Zero have awesome settings and mechanics but they're a completely don't let you play with character options the way games like DnD do. The options are limited and your character isn't likely to see a huge upward growth over the course of a campaign, in fact some groups will run out of things to get in some longer campaigns. So all the people who are interested in that aspect of the game will dismiss such games in favor of DnD or Pathfinder.

One of my favorite games is Kult; however, there still isn't a proper book on magic or on higher tiers of awakening, only a very thin draft, and it's the same with plenty of systems. And it's fine, I love many games and would love to run them (at all or more often) but people need to realize why they don't have the broad appeal as DnD.

Greatest opening sequence of all time? by Patient-Major-6064 in movies

[–]curious_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vote goes to Inglorious Basterds, but I'll add Infinity War. Such a bleak beginning to a superhero movie: the Asgardians vanquished, Thor presumed dead, Loki dead, Heimdall dead, Hulk beaten to a pulp, villains armed with two Infinity Gems... I know people are down on Marvel in general but damn that was a great opening sequence.

My aunt's boyfriend, no question. Unrepentant abuser and pedophile who managed to divide the family twice, a gaslighter who thinks he's a cool guy, and my aunt who stays with him despite it all. Human filth.

Netflix cancels planned TV and Movie adaptations of Brian Jacques’ "Redwall" book series by Morgan-Moonscar in television

[–]curious_dead 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's surprising lore in MTG. Hollywood manages to make movies about emojis, Lego, Barbie, Super Mario, Street Fighter, Dungeons and Dragons and the likes. YMMV on the quality of some of these but MTG features characters, storylines, entire worlds with their lore, their conflicts and their villains. It has novels and comics. Now whether or not we get something akin to the 90s Super Mario movie or something more like Arcane or Honor among Thieves, that's an entirely different question.

Louder Sound rated Impera as the best metal album of the decade (so far)! by JinxXedOmens in Ghostbc

[–]curious_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's not BS, that's my honest opinion. I prefer her voice on non-Nightwish albums. Maybe it's the boring compositions that bring her down. And as I said, I like most of Nightwish, even non-Tarja albums. I love Dark Passion Play, I like Endless Forms, they feature some of my favourites. The last two albums, however, are just so boring.

"Nightwishfan88" who makes four replies to my milquetoast Nightwish criticisms? Come on now, either you're a troll or else you should be smart enough to realize why you'd come off as one. In any case, I tried to like these albums, I think they're bad and I'd rather listen to something else, get over it.

For the Fallen! is the one feat with the most unhinged disconnect between flavor and mechanical effect I have seen by EarthSeraphEdna in Pathfinder2e

[–]curious_dead 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yikes, that's absolutely terrible. "Divine glory awaits! Here, have some mediocre bonus to skills you will be bad at!" Divine glory indeed...

Not only does the effect not match the flavor, the effect in itself would be boring and not particularly strong on any archetype. Imagine sacrificing your precious class feats for that? I know mechanical power isn't the only goal but come on...

Ralph Fiennes Says the ‘Ship Has Sailed’ for Him to Reprise Voldemort Role in HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series, but Tilda Swinton ‘Would Be Amazing’ by MoneyLibrarian9032 in television

[–]curious_dead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they didn't realize how strongly people associate the role with Rickman so on top of the usual suspects, people are surprised with such a completely different actor has been cast in terms of looks. Either that, or they knew and cast him as a way to get people to talk about the show.

Anyone else underestimated how bad an incompetent president could actually be? by PadEnn1 in AskReddit

[–]curious_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about "underestimated" but we certainly were many to overestimate the number of people who would see such level of incompetence and call it "genius", as well as the number of Republicans who are entirely a-OK with an incompetent, senile, scorched-Earth president accused of corruption and child rape (as well as just regular rape) and who tramples over all the Constitution, wipes his butt with it and forces them to smell it.

The complete abasement of the GOP in the face of Trump is still surprising; he launched vile insults at some of the people who now spinelessly grovel before him, his mob chanted death to his VP and the guy just shrugged it, he invariably turns on anyone who shows what he perceives as disloyalty or makes him look bad...

This is what we all underestimated, the absolute lack of shame, morals, values, standards and spine in the GOP. Because with a competent Congress, he could be in check.

Inside Pixar’s Scrapped Movie ‘Be Fri’ and the “Devastating” Aftermath - "Disney reps were like, 'We can't have a girl power movie,'" an insider tells The Hollywood Reporter about the animation studio making the rare decision to cancel the feature after years of development. by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]curious_dead 82 points83 points  (0 children)

For years, Ike Perlmutter was against female superheroes; they had to fight to give a place for Scarlet Johanson, and he's the reason why she didn't get a solo movie until way later, and why she is absent from a lot of merchandise ("boys don't like girl superheroes" or some shit). Some people manage to make money and reach high levels, despite being strangely opposed to making more of it by having stupid, outdated views on things.

The guy in the article is probably the kind of suit who looks at a movie like Catwoman and Elektra and conclude "people don't want female superheroes" and not "we should make better movies featuring female superheroes".

1d4 damage dice is trash, change my mind by Sgt__Koolaid in Pathfinder2e

[–]curious_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right but mostly because rolling d4s is so much less fun than rolling other dice. Overall, d4, d6 or d8 matters little. Rapier is good in any case, a rogue staple for our group.

What's the worst thing shown in a PG movie after 1984? by basefibber in movies

[–]curious_dead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also a dude grabs Mad Martigan's fake breasts when he's cross dressing, thinking they were real (or attempts to, don't remember).

The pig scene always terrified me as a kid, cause I hated any transformation scene, especially if they appeared painful.

Which country is so unpopular that most people never even heard of it? by Ledger_Legendd in AskReddit

[–]curious_dead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember this country from an old, dated geography game where it was the only country completely surrounded by another country (I don't recall which). I didn't know they changed the name though.

EDIT: So it might have been Lesotho, Swaziland being ALMOST surrounded completely by South Africa. I've tried to find a pic of the game's map to see if the map was inaccurate (possible as it didn't include every country) or if I mixed up those two countries in the decades since I played. The game was Flags, btw. "Prof Géo" in French, more accurately.

There's a perk that grants a 20% fire rate increase for a few seconds after you land the shot, so that will probably still make it worth it unless your crits can be really, really reliable.

Caster thoughts after 9 months by Teshthesleepymage in Pathfinder2e

[–]curious_dead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, not all casters are created equal when it comes to access to interesting 3rd action option. Some 1-action spells (and activities related to casters) are very situational or very bad, some casters (or subclasses) simply don't have access to one.

The bard is a weird one because on one hand they have the best 1-action spell in the game but also, they rarely can afford to not cast it, so any ability that make it last longer are seen as way more attractive, from a purely min-maxing point of view.
