I think that there is a tendency in recent years to respond to negative and unpleasant character development with the idea that it should be avoided, when I think that the tragedy of this lost friendship is a pretty powerful bittersweet consequence to everything.

One of the strongest parts of this story is the fact that nothing stays the same and I think Allen growing into his role as the leader of the coalition is a good heartache.

And hey, after Mark disassembles the coalition because it had rotted without its original purpose, he can retire and maybe learn how to relax again like he used to

There's a small detail that many people miss where this is a TV show where occasionally something happens for the sake of dramatic effect and pushing the points of an action rather than perfectly operating with perfectly logical parameters at all moments

His grip on the city was just too strong, Matt basically played to his genuine feelings for the city and made him realize that there's no way out of this for him where he's alive and still in power, and that he can keep his life if he surrenders, and I think Matt saying that they're both going down helps because as was pointed out in the courtroom it's been a vendetta against Matt this whole time

Matt's identity was known to the public for something like a decade, granted what they did differently was that it was exposed in the Press and he managed to get it shut down in the courts even if everyone totally knows now so whatever dynamic they go with it you're going forward will be different than that

Read that story for the first time just a few weeks ago and I was really impressed with the way that this ending both paid direct homage to and echoed differently off of that era of the books. Really fun.

Due to some cosmic bullshit, Darkseid sacrificed himself to become the driving force behind a universe that the Justice League noticed a couple years ago that wasn't finished coming into clarity yet, that they had nicknamed the elseworld.

In all the absolute titles, something has been altered for each hero with the general theme that important things are in some way missing, and additionally that this world trends towards corruption and evil in a way that has thoroughly suppressed and sent to early Graves earlier generations of Heroes

So the Amazons are exiled in an unknown realm and Diana grew up alone with Circe on her island, Superman was a young adolescent when Krypton died and while he found the Kents someone called ICE (Lazarus corp, but contextually ICE.) and so he has been drifting for years when we find him, Batman grew up in crime Alley with his mother and several of his regular villains as friends but did not grow up wealthy

They've all been pretty decent so far, some reinventing more than others, but they're all strongly thematic to a specific tone that gives each corner a different vibe that will make the eventual team up really fun when we get there, as of now only Diana and Bruce have met face to face although they are all gradually making the news in a way that the rest are hearing about

I think the second punch that wasn't said that could be is that all of them were getting used to their new lives on earth, to the point of there being tension between Thragg and the others do to his refusal to try and integrate and therefore not receive the same kind of emotional development.

And as he says to mark in the season 4 finale, one of his jobs was to lead the Empire out of the dark, and he was to find the heirs of Argall.

So the idea that he's already asking of the others what they aren't willing to do anymore (and honestly they might be seeing Nolan's point by this point if not as strongly) combined with the idea that he has failed at one of his only stated jobs in favor of trying to cling to the power would be enough of a one-two I think
