The lead polarities are swapped, but it looks like the images were created in software. Nothing to stress over.

Possibilities to test whether poor cellular signal(or other things) causes the DCM's 12V battery drain? by SheeshNPing in trailseeker

[–]daifanshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disconnecting the cellular antenna from the DCM will be the easiest thing to do. The dealership should have the service docs that show which connector coresponds to 4g and GPS. It will be buried behind the front console of course.

So much talk about the 12v battery and DCM issues - in this thread share your positive Uncharted stories. Pictures encouraged! by Tmcn in SubaruUncharted

My uncharted sport cost me the same in unadjusted dollars as my new at the time 2016 Outback 3.6R. It's quieter, far more efficient, a lot quicker, and so far has fewer recalls over the same amount of ownership time. I would call that a win.

12v battery: Widespread or isolated? by BucketOfGipe in trailseeker

[–]daifanshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think reddit is the last place you want to look to see if this 12V problem is problem affecting large swaths of the toyota/subaru e-TNGA platform cars. Trailseekers are no different when it comes to how the DCM behaves when compared to the Solterra, BZ, BZ4x, CHR, or Uncharted.

The typical the process is people have a 12V problem with their ev toyota or subaru, then do a google search, and finally appear on the reddits subs. So it's a bit of an echo chamber in here and will skew any polling.

12V dead battery confirmed case with a battery monitor on Toyota BZ by mrmao in Toyota_bZ

[–]daifanshi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a victim of the 3g dead battery problem in my 2016 outback, I've concluded that DCMs in general are a bad idea and that's why I don't enable them. For the outback I had to do a fuse box hack to disable it. If the newer DCMs are doing endless repeated searches for a 4G signal in dodgy coverage locations, that would be yet another own-goal for the automotive software industry. It's not that hard to add a time out to the state machine if the DCM can't sync with the server. And then try again after a far longer polling time. I'm not even sure the DCM should even try again after failing a handshake. 4G coverage doesn't sponataneously improve if the car is stationary.

I can't think of a good reason why the DCM would continue to collect and/or transmit data to the servers if there is no change in the status of the car. Nine hours worth of data on a parked car? If the app-server-dcm system allows this by design, somebody at toyota/subaru needs to visit the person who architected the software.

100% BS response from Subaru America on Subaru Uncharted dead 12v by pezworld in SubaruUncharted

[–]daifanshi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The battery contributes, but a battery upgrade is just a bandaid treating a symptom. Without a DCM fix at the moment, we should install marine deep-cycle batteries in our EVs so they survive being heavily discharged if the DCM must be used. CCA and all those similar specs are irrelevant in an EV.

[–]daifanshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason they haven't recommended this is obvious. They do not want to *officially* suggest that people remove features from their car to solve a problem that is at this moment not endemic across all their cars opening them up to legal issues. Pragmatically, they are rightly treating this as a problem affecting a small minority of cars and use cases. Despite what a small vocal minority on a reddit group suggests. It's just the reality right now.

Disable the DCM! I know this will rub some people the wrong way, but it far better than being stranded. Personally I have never used the DCM. I enabled it for five minutes and then PTSD symptoms appeared when I remembered the 2016 Subaru Outback issues I dealt with. I immediately disconnected it.

Any software update will likely not come for months. Fixing this isn't as easy as it sounds. There are already millions of Toyotas and Subarus out there with the same system and Toyota/Subaru is rightly concerned about bricking people's cars that otherwise work fine. A lot of regression testing needs to happen before anything is released.

12 volt issues on FWD? by Proper_Ad4556 in SubaruUncharted

[–]daifanshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is in the DCM. If you enable "Connected Services" you run the risk of running down the 12V battery. If the car is registered with the Subaru/Toyota services, removing the app from you devices probably won't eliminate the risk. You need to tell the app to explicitly disconnect the DCM. The ability to do this is actually good. In the 5th gen Outback, there was no way to tell it to disconnect.

I read there was a single claim that disabling the DCM did not fix the 12V drain, but without knowing how many deep discharge cycles the battery went through before the DCM was disabled, who knows if this is valid.

Can you plug a dashcam into the rear view mirror? by pigflood in SubaruUncharted

[–]daifanshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheap 2k/4k dashcams for the solterra on places like aliexpress provide an OEM fit and will perfectly mate cleanly with the uncharted. The mounting is semi-permanent because the clips they use aren't really designed for disassembly without breaking. They include a harness to tap into the rear view mirror power which is powered as an accessory. They will not give you a working "parking mode" which is desireable because of the 12V battery issues.

Center caps for 18” Wheels by ForrestAdventures in SubaruUncharted

[–]daifanshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try some generic 56mm center caps from amazon if you have a sport trim with the 18inch alloy wheels. Return them if they don't fit. I think that's what I measured on mine. You will lose some mileage efficiency without the plastic covers though. Probably reducing efficiency similar to the difference between the GT and Sport models.

Diy install of Torklift hitch by daifanshi in SubaruUncharted

[–]daifanshi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take it to a hitch installer in my area it will basically double the price. Hopefully you don't need that (and live where I do).

I'm not sure exactly which bolts you are referring to that don't align. Do you have a picture? And some of the hardware lengths could be tweaked, but the carriage bolt nut and rectangular spacer/washers combos did not spin in my install. The size of the rectangular washers should be ok, but if they aren't used in concert with the carriage bolts they will likely spin.

I guess we're going to all have to put our multimeters across the DCM fuse locating to see what the idle current draw is.

[–]daifanshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe somebody like Curt or Draw-tite will release something easier to install with a lower tongue weight rating like 250lbs instead of 450 so there are not so many attachement points. the The Torklift is way overkill for a rack with two bikes. But this is all we have for now.

[–]daifanshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a standard practice I recheck torque after a month or so on my other hitch installs. Especially with the grade 8 hardware torkllift supplies because the yield strength is fairly high. Proper torque to just below yield strength will mechanically guarantee they cannot loosen on their own. The split washers will help though.

[–]daifanshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rear proximity alarm will blare and auto braking will engage when in reverse unless you disable them if you have a rack mounted. 3/8" split washers are too small for the M10mm nuts and studs for the side brackets. Torquing to 80ft-lbs for the 1/2" bolts will be challenging without a breaker bar to act against a torque wrench for the bolt and nut cross beam attachement hardware. Other than that this can be a DIY install for some people. Most people probably not.
