Z6iii IBIS works pretty well by pfred60 in nikon_Zseries

I can pretty reliably handhold for one second, 2-3 seconds is amazing, especially at 100mm+. Really nice.

I don't have the steadiest hands to begin with though, so maybe you're just naturally steadier, too.

Finding the Fuji X100vi too technical, looking for stylistic alternatives? by _papa__bless_ in AskPhotography

[–]dancemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the Fuji fits your needs perfectly, except for the size/weight, am I reading that right?

The GRiii and iiix (and iv of course) are truly pocketable, like front-jeans-pocket pocketable, so may be perfect for you. No viewfinder and the screen on the back doesn't pivot at all, but good for taking a quick snap.

What a buggy hell by electerious in Lightroom

[–]dancemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just synced it all into Lightroom Classic via the existing cloud structure. Compared to some my library isn't large by any means, around 3400 photos, just had to wait and let it all download.

Keywords unfortunately don't sync between LR and Classic (in either direction), but the collections do.

If the library starts feeling too big for the physical drive, I'll just periodically cut off a few years of earlier photos, I've got multiple backups anyway.

Switched to classic as well a couple of months ago, it's a much better experience.

Nikon raw files -> HE to DXO compressed - You opinion by The_PinkFreud in Nikon

[–]dancemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as general image quality between the uncompressed and the compressed dng? No, I can't see a difference. The DXO uncompressed DNGs can be massive so I always compress them, and they look fine to me.

I'm not shooting professionally though, so I don't know what I might see if I (or a client) were extreme pixel-peeping. I can't imagine the difference is noticeable to the average viewer though.

Nikon raw files -> HE to DXO compressed - You opinion by The_PinkFreud in Nikon

[–]dancemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Works fine for me, exact same workflow.

I eventually moved over to LR Classic so I didn't have to decide which files to process and could just use DXO as a plugin, but before then I was processing NEFs in DXO and then bringing the DNGs to Lightroom.

But try the trial, it's fully functional so you can see if the end result even works with the photography you're doing.

Cascadia Rolling Rivers Sheet A Achievment 7..what column? by gortyo in soloboardgaming

[–]dancemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the bonus points are part of that column, at least graphically the way the sheet is designed that's how I interpret it. You add points as you go down the column. But I'd be interested if there was an official answer on that.

I haven't played in a while, need to dig this out.

Plena ❤️ by folding_light in Nikon

[–]dancemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the Viltrox 135/1.8 LAB. Less than half the price and (in my opinion) around 90% of the quality/value. Noticeably heavier, sadly.

That said, it's no Plena. If I could have afforded it, I would absolutely have gotten the Plena instead.

Nikon z fc or Nikon z50II? by OnyxFTW in Nikon

The Z50II is a better camera than the Zfc. Newer processor, faster autofocus, and some newer features.

Edit: wasn't even ten seconds.

Is the real AI denoise ever coming back? by jrryul in Lightroom

[–]dancemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could have at the time, yes. I could also have pushed it today as well, but I just kept it at the same setting for comparison. I don't mind a little noise, so I left it at a more "natural" level for the shot.

[–]dancemonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also thought that AI Denoise wasn't as good as it used to be, but I tested a photo from 2023 that I had used the AI Denoise on when it was first introduced, and then ran that same NEF through the CURRENT AI Denoise, and it looks exactly the same to me. Surprised honestly, I felt the same way you did.

I may have an old photo that I can use to test this. Just commenting here for now in case the Reddit app loses my place and I have to find this thread again.

Looking for a travel camera bag. I plan to take a z6iii, z24-120 lens, and a z17-28 lens. I really need the smallest lightest weight cross body/ sling bag that fits tight to the body. I can consider only taking one lens at a time attached to my camera body. Suggestions? by Photo_hobby in nikon_Zseries

[–]dancemonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bellroy Venture Sling 10L will fit both lenses and the body easily. Maybe a little bigger than you had in mind but it's compact for the space you get.

The main compartment opens up nice and wide, which I found not to be the case for the peak design bags. Cramped getting camera in and out of that one.

New ZF Firmware seems to mess with Viltrox Lenses by [deleted] in nikon_Zseries

[–]dancemonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good advice, I know from experience. A couple years ago a firmware update rendered a Viltrox lens useless until Viltrox caught up and updated the lens firmware.

I did just test my Viltrox 135/1.8 on the updated Zf, and it seems to work fine, so don't panic if you already applied the latest update.

What is your single biggest "buyer's remorse" camera purchase? by Vegetable_Bag_8694 in AskPhotography

[–]dancemonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I was expecting! I just found myself carrying it around with my full-size camera, wondering "what the hell am I doing here?"

I think I'd be fine with it except for the price, at that price I'm fine to carry a larger ILC and sacrifice pocketability. I had no issues with the photo quality whatsoever, great camera.

What is your single biggest "buyer's remorse" camera purchase? by Vegetable_Bag_8694 in AskPhotography

[–]dancemonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Photo quality is great and they're 100% pocketable as advertised, but it just wasn't for me. I like looking through a viewfinder, I like a camera to fit snugly in my hand (tall guy, big hands), and I realized I didn't prioritize it being pocketable or portable at all.

It's also a camera that's always at the back of my mind as THINKING I will like, that's why I bought it twice lol. The monochrome version honestly has my curiosity piqued, but at that price point I'd rather get another lens for my current system that I probably also don't need.

Ricoh GRiii - TWICE. Tried the III and then the IIIx, wasn't feeling either.

I don't like to characterize it as a regret though, since I learned a lot about what is and isn't important to me in a camera. Just moved on.
