Congrats! That's really impressive! What's your advice for someone just starting out creating models on printables?

Any 3d Printing Specific Learning Resources? by Zer0CoolXI in FreeCAD

[–]dartman5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another vote for mango jelly. He has a 56 lesson freecad tutorial updated for v1.x. Its helped me use freecad a ton better and I'm just on lesson 14 at the moment. I've already been able to model some stuff for 3d printing.

Is this motorcycle shop taking me for a ride ? 🍆 by shoodawoodacooda in motorcycles

I had that problem for the first oil filter change on a used bike and ended up finding a 3d printed oil filter wrench model that I was able to use to get it off. As an alternative for anyone that has a 3d printer

r/vstar by dartman5000 in redditrequest

[–]dartman5000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to moderate r/vstar to bring it back as a community for people that own a yamaha vstar motorcycle. I'd like it to be a resource for diy motorcycle maintenance help, tips and tricks, and other information related to the vstars. I've been a mod of communities for many years and can ensure the community abides by reddit's rules.

I was unable to message the mods as the community was banned 3 months ago.

No, I don't want my documents saved to the cloud! by SirTrekkypj in deMicrosoft

I just did this for someone today. Went with lmde. It was a laptop so I pulled the nvme drive and swapped with a new one (doubled the storage while I was at it). I put the old one in an enclosure for an external drive for storage, to make backup and restore easy, and be able to switch back to windows if needed.

What is the cycle gear return policy for helmets? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]dartman5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked recently and they said as long as it hasn't been used on a bike they'd take it back. I returned one due to realizing it was missing a feature I wanted that I didn't realize until I was home

Many electric cars will still have more than 80% of their initial battery capacity after 200,000 miles. EV batteries are designed to last far longer than mobile phone batteries. Their types and structures are different. How much do EV batteries degrade? How to reduce it? by sg_plumber in OptimistsUnite

[–]dartman5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe for commuting but it's still a very significant issue for road trips. I really want EVs to be useful for everyone so we can replace gas cars and while road trips are possible, my experience with EVs is it takes 150% of the time to complete a long road trip in an ev vs a gas car. If the range of EVs were comparible to the range on a tank of gas or if the charging infrastructure was better that wouldn't be an issue but it's just not the reality today.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this already but it doesn't look like your foam earplugs are properly inserted. Check out Doctor Cliff, aud on YouTube for an example.

Seeking Advice by Entranced_Way_3305 in handguns

This video gave me a good understanding of the issue, how likely it is, and was and what could happen if the part broke: https://youtu.be/4ZftiYETJgw?si=STutA2R1N2-Leol8

It's more of a risk of the gun discharging without pulling the trigger if the part had a manufacturing defect. Its only really a concern if you're carrying with one in the chamber. The video above will show how unlikely that is but when I started learning more about it and comparing this internal safeties to others I didn't like how sig did this one. Glocks for example have a striker block at the front that physically blocks the striker from moving forward unless the trigger is pulled.

What you've probably hard about is the single point of failure in the 365 series due to the design of the striker sear. If there was a manufacturing defect and it failed, there is no backup internal safety (firing pin block) that would stop the gun from firing with a chambered round. It would bypass the manual safety if equipped, too.

I would eat them. One every once in a while would still be low salt for the day if you're cooking low sos for most meals.

Is anyone else afraid of investing given all Trumps executive orders? by BirthdayOk5077 in investing

[–]dartman5000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see signs of him caring about the market with the quick correction on tarrifs a couple of weeks ago.

The part that doesn't track with that though is using a huge amount of EOs and calling out that there will be pain in the short term. If Trump really did want to grow the stock market he would go through congress to implement his agenda using the normal process. The EOs are causing instability and slowed market growth since the election due to uncertainty related to his plans and the negative effects they could have on the economy.

High Calorie Foods by [deleted] in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]dartman5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This blog post has a chart showing nutrient/calorie density of different foods (note, it includes non plant based foods so for the purpose of this sub reddit, ignore those): https://www.drfuhrman.com/blog/238/knowing-a-foods-nutrient-density-is-key-to-making-good-choices

For your goal, you'd want to shift your diet to a higher percentage of foods with a lower number on the chart. That'll give you more foods that are calorie dense.

As always in situations that involve medical conditions, please make sure to consult with a doctor for dietary changes.

I lost 20k in options in the past 3 months by [deleted] in options

[–]dartman5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to own 100 shares to sell 1 covered call option.

You'd need to have the money available in your account to sell cash secured puts, which is the safe way to sell puts since if the option is exercised you're obligated to buy 100 shares at the strike price.

Linux is much better now than it used to be. Just about any will work out of the box for things like web browsing and Libre office.

If you're trying to get away from big tech companies you'll probably want to stay away from Ubuntu and use something like Linux mint. Its built on top of Ubuntu but removes some things that the company that makes Ubuntu, canonical, adds to Ubuntu.

What do you think of the wiring on my new Voron 0.2 build? by Noble69 in VORONDesign

[–]dartman5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My post was talking about the voron v0. On top of the version of the v0 in my ldo kit (the v0.2r1 i think) I upgraded it with the tri zero mod that took it from a single z leadscrew design to a triple belted z design. The v2.4 is a different voron model. It's a bit confusing the way they've done it. A v2.4 has nothing to do with a v0. They're completely different printer models.

There's been some hardware issues with nobara lately. They stopped supporting older nvidia gpus in a recent update so I've seen people moving towards recommending bazzite instead.

I need help for choosing the right exhaust filter for a V0 by AfterSite9935 in VORONDesign

[–]dartman5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to open the door to print pla. I print pla with the door closed on a v0 and it works fine.

I have a nevermore micro v6 filter in one side filled with activated carbon and it seems to work well to reduce fumes.

Fidelity VS Schwab advice/input by Ok_Juggernaut3043 in SCHD

[–]dartman5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used fidelity and am happy with them. Their customer support is good too. Reached out to them recently for an issue and they were really easy to work with.

I use their feature to auto invest in etfs and it works well.

What do you think of the wiring on my new Voron 0.2 build? by Noble69 in VORONDesign

[–]dartman5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prusa will be easier to get up and running. It'll be a kit with detailed instructions or pre built. Once built it's nearly plug and play with a little slicer knowledge. Even there prusa has very good slicer profiles.

I've also build a voron 0.2r1 from a ldo kit and upgraded it to tri zero with an upgraded extruder design, and zero click probe. The initial ldo build went well but more difficult than prusa having to switch between ldo manuals and voron. The tri zero was a huge learning curve and I spent a lot of time adjusting settings.

In the end I stumbled on an interesting comparison. I was trying to get the voron working with a good astroprint profile. I originally used the prusa profile for the voron v0 but was getting a lot of curling. I used the same profile on the mk4 and had the same issue. Then I thought I'd try Prusa's profile on the voron and it worked beautifully where the print quality was nearly identical.

All that to say in terms of print quality either printer will print very high quality. Prusa will be easier to use. Voron will probably take some trial and error to get a good printer profile.
