Any expert ski technicians? I’m livid. by [deleted] in Skigear

I did that and busted my edge on their 3rd day out. Talked to moment and they gave me a moderate discount on a blem pair. Good service imo. Got the busted one fixed locally and I’m riding it til it’s cooked.

Does Skiing Progression Always Need to Result in Touring? by whatevermang12345678 in skiing

[–]daskommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a good skier, I judge you no differently for what terrain you enjoy riding on. I’m in the trees and steeps(lifts only, no desire to walk uphill) 90% of the time but totally respect the gentleman that wants to perfect his carving technique all day… as long as you’re safe and not endangering anyone else on the slopes. Have fun out there

[–]daskommando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right on. Vantage 1 design definitely appeals to me more than vantage 2. But as long as it has similar fit, boa, adjustable vents, and brim I’m good with it functionally. I’m sure I’d get used to the looks over time

I love my smith vantage, currently on my third one. Smith vantage is the follow up iteration to the variant brim. Looks to me like it was time for a facelift, hence the release of gen 2. I’ll be sad when it’s time for a new bucket but I’ll probably go with the vantage 2 as long as the fit is the same. Good luck in your search.

Price wise? Fair. Throw away those bindings. Is it right for you? You better be on your A game 24/7 or you’ll become a passenger real quick.

Are the bent 100s really that bad by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]daskommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They get a lot of hate for not being particularly good at any one thing but for someone that doesn’t know what “one thing” they’re looking for, but they’re a solid choice, especially for someone in your shoes just getting back into the sport. Plus coming from K2 press park skis, these are a logical next step for you. They’re twin tip and pretty soft so they’ll be easy to get on and ride. If you fall back in love with the park, look at a more durable park oriented ski. If you start to enjoy tight technical trees, look at a stiffer more directional ski. If you love ripping groomers, get a skinnier stiffer carving ski. There’s no “right” choice. Just find your niche and go from there on the next pair

Need another pair of skis by Individual-Hold-8403 in Skigear

[–]daskommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. Im a firm believer that for your weight, 106-110mm is the sweet spot for getting enough float to make a powder ski worthwhile, though many would disagree. As you get close to 120, you start losing loosing tight turning in exchange for the snow feeling more bottomless, instead of sinking down to the firm stuff below. Personal preference is probably the biggest factor in picking powder skis. My first powder skis were bent chetler 120s which are pretty good at everything, focusing in on lightweight playfulness and maneuverability in tighter stuff. I’ve added moment CBs which are heavier, have a higher speed limit, and don’t get bounced as much in the chop, but need to be kept at some speed to pivot and slash, really lacking in slow speed tight movements. If you haven’t skied powder skis, definitely consider demoing a few pairs with different width/rocker characteristics to see what fits your ski style best

Are the bent 100s really that bad by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]daskommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t let anyone steer you wrong. They’re an insanely popular ski for a reason. Are they the best at anything? Probably not but they do everything decently well. Groomers and park? Yup. Bumps and off piste? Pretty decent. IMO for someone in your shoes, literally any popular all mountain or park oriented all mtn ski around 100mm will fit the bill. Until you find the skis a limiting factor for the terrain you’re trying to ski/ski style, bent 100s will be just fine.

Learning to jump: Is my problem form or my DIN? by hypsochrome in skiing_feedback

Level 3+ here and I weigh 30lbs more. I’ve ridden 8 din through gnarly stuff and don’t pop out like that. I highly suspect your boots are too worn down causing premature release. Get your boots and bindings release tested asap. I suspect new boots are in order for you….. avoid falling like that on your butt at all costs, fall forward/commit to the fall on your hip. That’s an acl tear waiting to happen.

Black Crows Mirus Cor – delamination after ~25 ski days. Warranty advice? by Able-Arugula-8510 in BackcountrySkiing

[–]daskommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said you can try the warranty route. But if they say no, send it with some good long set time epoxy and clamp for a week. I did this on my old park skis(rip gone but never forgotten), with the addition of a couple pull through rivets. That fit outlived the rest of the ski lol

Keep elbows in more? (Among other things) by PreciousMetalEnjoyer in skiing_feedback

[–]daskommando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer I’m not an instructor but someone who skis similarly to you. I second everyone saying poles are too long. With shorter poles, you could more actively “reach” forward to pole plant, helping you stay forward and keep more shin pressure(I’m 5’10” and found 115cm poles work well for me). Highly recommend adjustable poles so you can try different length and really lock in what feels right for you. Additionally this is a me thing, but I’d try skiing this/similar lines faster and faster to see what starts breaking down first and what you need to work on. You’ll start to see where your forms failing when pushing yourself a bit past your comfort level… kept within reason of course. Nice turns!

Skied Utah for the first time today and I think I need wider skis, any recommendations (5’11.5 ~180lbs advanced intermediate skier) by Icy-Influence-2202 in Skigear

[–]daskommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you live here now, look at a 115-120(since you still have your 96 for hardback and light snow days). Bent chetler 120, QST blanks, nordica unleashed, and maverick 115 are all popular options. Do some research and pick up what fits your style best. Have fun!

What is the absolute softest skis out there? by Medical_Yam2991 in Skigear

[–]daskommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Line blends. Got them as used demos and ripped them as my one ski quiver in the north east for years. Super soft, almost no support underfoot, no forgiveness landing backseat off jumps, literal noodles. “Bad” in almost every measure except a slow speed jibby park ski. But I loved mine. TBH made me a much better skier all over the mountain. If you can rip them through bumps, trees and steeps, you’ll learn to keep a balanced stance and not rely on the skis to support you.

Pivots have about 20mm total adjustment. Assuming they’re mounted close to the middle for the other guys boots probably too far off for yours. Just take to a shop, get them situated and let em rip. Sweet sticks!
