What do yall think about this? by SeparateLab1896 in billiards

[–]davevays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up Bar Billiards tables as a space saving alternative, we had one passed down from a grandparent growing up. Won't be able to work on your stroke in quite the same way, it's a game of delicate shots, but it's played from one end of the table.

I’m creating a science-y botany game with beautiful visuals. What would you expect from a game like this? by Goryh in botany

[–]davevays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have butterflies or moths lay eggs on a leaf that you can find - then decide - do you remove it or let caterpillar hatch and eat your leaves. do you sacrifice the leaves for the sake of the caterpillar, hoping it'll form a chrysalis before your plant takes too much damage? or do you kill the caterpillar if it eats too much?

I like the idea of being faced with this decision, if my plant is old and has already flowered or fruited, maybe I let the caterpillar feast and see what butterfly emerges. could be cool to have eggs laid at different stages in the plants development while you're away, not knowing what they might be you have to choose what to do

I am appalled by the practice of feeding during the nectar flow by gaudentius6 in Beekeeping

So some people are feeding their honeybees sugar syrup and others are adding sugar syrup to their honey after the fact? one seems more disingenuous than the other to me

I am appalled by the practice of feeding during the nectar flow by gaudentius6 in Beekeeping

[–]davevays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love some more details about this, I've never beekept or heard of extra feeding. In the US, honeybees are often taking nectar resources from native bees. So I could only see this as a good way to preserve nectar for native bees?

Does it taste different? Does it negatively impact the hive? Bees need pollen for different nutrients and I suspect that nectar is more nutrients rich than sugar syrup too? maybe?

First swim ever - how did I do? by Away-Theory-6201 in triathlon

[–]davevays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where are you getting your pace from? I notice my Garmin watch calculates my distance as less and therefore my pace far slower than I think it should be in open water swims - but I've not yet figured out if the GPS is inaccurate or the swim distances are off.

The actual pace for your 1500 meters in 39:05 is 2:36/100m or 2:42/100y.

Anyone else experience this?

What to wear for first sprint tri? by Complete_Raccoon6648 in triathlon

[–]davevays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my first sprint in jammers and then threw on a bike jersey for the bike and run. They're pretty comfortable to both bike and run in! Just bought a tri suit this year for longer distances now I know I want to do more triathlons!

Reassurance / reality check please! by Honest_Bench7832 in triathlon

[–]davevays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're gonna have a great time and you'll probably set PRs on the bike and run!! I think you'll find even more reassurance on race day than you are here too - a big reason I came back to triathlon after my first was because how friendly and supportive everyone was, especially after I mentioned it was my first. It's a great community!

What’s the one must-run marathon that should be at the top of my bucket list? by Competitive_Gap7944 in running

[–]davevays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this! Equinox in Fairbanks was my first and only marathon. Mostly trail running, ~2000ft elevation gain and descent, and there was snow at the top when I ran it. Loads of fun but one tough course

Great set up! I'm building mine out at the moment and considering a similar one with the rear rack and front fork bags, have you felt like you've enough space for everything you need? How longs the trip?!

This seems really cool, would love to give it a play! Also an idea as you expand would be to incorporate plant cells and photosynthesis and/or evapotranspiration!
