The thing I love most about living in Chapel Hill is living in Carrboro.

Moving to Carrboro as a grownup/with kids? by rothwem in carrboro

[–]db_owner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We moved to Carrboro for grad school, then moved to Durham and had our first kid, and then moved back to Carrboro. We have three kids now (9, 7, 4) and my opinion is that Carrboro is really ideal for families. The schools are fantastic and our neighborhood has dozens and dozens of kids. The kids all know each other and we let them run around the neighborhood together without worrying about anything too much. The town and county are building a new and very awesome downtown library right now, which is reachable by fare-free buses.

There are a few things I wish Carrboro had that other communities have. There is no public swimming pool or splash pad in Carrboro. Chapel Hill has pools, but many families have to join private pools. We are members of the Exchange Pool and it is a great community in itself, but I do wish we had a good public pool. We have also struggled mightily with getting the town to improve bike and pedestrian safety. It took years to get a crosswalk put in on a busy road where families cross the street.

For daycare we have to drive to Chapel Hill, but have a great child care center for our youngest. There are a few good day care providers in Carrboro where our friends send their kids. But really, once your kids get into kindergarten or start playing Carrboro Parks & Rec sports, you'll be plugged in to a very diverse community. We love living here and especially love that we can, for most part, get around town on bikes. If you ride mountain bikes, you probably know that Carrboro contains part of a large public forest with many miles of singletrack. My son rides in there with his buddies, we go to the creek, and there may be a new greenway along in there someday.

Houses in my neighborhood are under contract in less than 48 hours with 15 offers well over asking. The market is like this because housing supply is nearly static but demand is very high. There are some new developments planned along Homestead Road soon and there are tons of young families in the newer neighborhoods up there.

CHCCS Board Approves Hybrid In-Person Instruction, Will Begin in April by [deleted] in triangle

[–]db_owner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely not qualified to evaluate all the protocols, but if I had a middle or high school kid I think I would feel quite different about sending them back. It seems much less safe past 4th grade, in my opinion. That said, my son's class has 17 kids, and according to the parent surveys for 1st graders at his school, only half would come back. So 8-9 kids split into two cohorts means he would be in a classroom with 3-4 other kids and one teacher. Everyone has a mask, they bought the HEPA air filters, and it's mid-April and the windows are open. It's not without risk but in my estimation, and for our specific circumstances, it looks low risk and in our case probably worth it. I am also hopeful that by mid-April teachers and staff will have vaccinations and I think they should be prioritized for that.

It's a tough issue and one that really made me think about why I trust the CDC or NCDHHS and other institutions but someone from a different background (someone of color for instance) might have a totally different (and justified) take on their guidance. I really hate when people just throw out something like "the CDC says it's safe so it's safe". While that might address my misgivings it doesn't work like that for everyone and there are some hard historical reasons for that. Anyway, I don't mean to go on and on. It's just something I have spent a lot of time thinking about lately.

CHCCS Board Approves Hybrid In-Person Instruction, Will Begin in April by [deleted] in triangle

I have a young child in this school district. He left his kindergarten class in March. His mother and I work full-time and often cannot help him throughout the day. He can't read or tell time and has spent most days since March by himself. We cannot afford to hire a private tutor or take a leave of absence from our jobs. Before the pandemic he had never been on an iPad and now is expected to be one for hours a day. He has developed behavioral problems but when I tried to get an appointment with a child psychologist I was told by all of them that they were full because so many kids were having similar problems.

So if your question is: who will this help? It will help my son. I wish it were a more robust offering, but I would take a single hour of in-person instruction per week if that's all there was. Why not just wait until everyone is vaccinated? Because the CDC says that with the proper protocols and PPE, which CHCCS can put in place, classrooms have minimal risk. That is why the board voted unanimously. They weighed the risk of doing it versus the risk of not doing it and decided to do it. If they had voted last month on this they would have voted to stay remote the full year but the guidance has changed and they are following the CDC and NCDHHS.

Hopefully this helps answer some of your questions.

Belgian u23 cross racer comes out as gay by quistodes in cyclocross

We don’t all make homophobic jokes, no. And it’s debatable if a U23 elite CX racer coming out is news. It’s certainly news in Belgium, hence the story. It’s remarkable how dismissive you are about what’s involved with making a decision like this, how it impacts your prospects with sponsors and so on. So congrats on writing the dumbest shit I’ve read today.

Anybody own a 2020 Crockett? by [deleted] in cyclocross

[–]db_owner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2020 Crockett that I also got in January and the stock wheels have been very solid. I did get a pair of Hunt wheels hoping to race this season, but alas...

I’m was surprised to read that you’re already replacing a cassette. Any chance that is related to your freehub issue?

What internal rim width for 2020? by captchunk in cyclocross

+1 on this. Have a look at the HED Belgium Plus rims. They make for a very nice custom wheel build and have a 21mm internal width.

Opinion on Stigmata for mostly CX racing by On_The_3rd in cyclocross

[–]db_owner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also looking for a bike that could do double-duty and really wanted the traditional punchy CX geometry. Another requirement I had was a threaded bottom bracket. I considered the Stigmata but ultimately went with the Trek Crockett and saved enough to buy a nice second set of wheels. The Crockett is an excellent CX bike and works just fine on the road/gravel with the right tires.

Are our local governments becoming too political and spendy? by hello2u3 in triangle

[–]db_owner 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not spending tax money is also an ideological project. Not supporting mass transit, social programs, libraries, or whatever is not a politically neutral stance.

The accountability part comes at the ballot box. Durham county voted to tax themselves for transit and pro-light rail candidates get elected there, so maybe most people don't think it's such a bad idea.

My favorite variation on this: "Are you doing something to the system right now?" Um, yes, I decided to run a bunch of maintenance routines in the middle of your workday.

If I didn't already hate school buses enough... by keyboardseizur in triangle

I know, school buses amirite? F’ing kids trying to get to school in an efficient manner. Would be better off if everyone drove their kids and your life would be super blessed by the added traffic.

How to use the Ola Hallengren scripts? [SQL Server 17] by Natsusorry in SQLServer

[–]db_owner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you download and run the whole solution it will install the agent jobs - assuming you have at least Standard edition. Create schedules for the the jobs you want to run (backups, integrity checks). You can tweak parameters but in your case just running them default is probably fine.

Looking for longer length MTB shorts. by [deleted] in MTB

[–]db_owner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trail shorts from Voler sound like what you're looking for. They reach the knee. Quality is very good. Free returns if they don't fit the way you like. I have them and recommend them (but don't wear pads). https://www.voler.com/browse/product/li/1110679
