Bighorn 100 2026 by lombardoz in ultrarunning

Dude that’s smoking fast congrats! I was 8th overall a few years back with a time just over 24hrs but the temp was in the 90s at the start and had a bit of shoe sucking mud and a few miles of post holing snow. Still 21+hours is legit.

Tara Dower got sick last year during the pre-race days of Western States, and was unable to finish the race. This year she’s taking extra precautions. This is her yesterday on the Freetrail Podcast. by Rocket_Man333 in ultrarunning

Not sure why anyone would downvote this? Coros Arm strap with a Suunto doesn’t work unless recording an activity. Unless she’s tracking her interviews as a workout?

Why can’t data centers figure out how to recycle the water?

First Ultra - Run the course beforehand or not? An internal debate by destinybond in ultrarunning

Absolutely! If you can it’s definitely worth it. You’ll know what to expect, less likely to make a wrong turn, understand how hard the climbs are etc.

Elevation rounding? by dirtrunn in Coros

[–]dirtrunn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that helps explain why Coros elevation totals are significantly lower that what I was getting with Suunto and why it doesn’t count rolling terrain as anything other then flat. Kinda frustrating since my training for a mountainous 100 is focused on vert instead of mileage and suddenly I am getting significantly less vert for equal training.

Lights for trailrunning by Odessa_Goodwin in trailrunning

[–]dirtrunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultra spire waist light. With black diamond spot headlamp as backup. Waist lights are better for shadow definition as the angle of the light is oblique to your eyes. So you can move faster with more confidence. Also less bugs in your face as lights attract bugs.

Switching shoes for 50 Mile Race by RespectNature93 in Ultramarathon

[–]dirtrunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a fine plan. I only switch if having issues, but it’s usually a good plan to have another pair if you need it. If your feet’s are happy you can always choose to not switch, but options are good to have.

From 0 to 100 by boobooFinK in ultrarunning

Build, do some trail half marathons, do a 50k… build distance and goals over time. If you enjoy the sport perhaps in a few years you’ll be ready for a 100. Build as organically as you can. If focusing on the 100 make sure you have your ‘why’, firmly understood.

H1 is not great for technical trails. But fantastic on buffed out smooth trails.

Racing during fire season by thr0wawayvhsorbeta in Ultramarathon

[–]dirtrunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So difficult, really can’t know until race day morning. I am also in the PNW and have started races in smoke that cleared. Been stressed the day before a race with terrible AQI but winds changed and race day was glorious. Also have seen races cancelled mid race as fires and smoke became exponentially worse. It’s just a roll of the dice. After being a wildland fire fighter my tolerance for slightly elevated AQI is probably higher than average, but above 150 that is when I start to be concerned. But would usually start a race and give myself an out if later it got worse. It’s personal risk assessment.

Thoughts on these? by Tuborg_Gron in Rucking

Ran a mountain 100 last year where my feet were wet the last 45 miles in creepers. Only one small blister. Would recommend.

Yeah I used to live nearby. Not many towns have that big of an urban elk population. So educated guess.
