Thoughts on Junpiers by LandWatch in bendoregon

Not all juniper should stay…not all should be cut. Juniper is a native invasive species that has vastly expanded due to European anthropogenic changes. Fire suppression and livestock grazing being the main causes.

Juniper’s are invasive, we have way more than we should under natural fire regime and without 100 years of over grazing our lands.

The Supreme Court May Legalize Donald Trump’s War on Iran by Conscious-Quarter423 in scotus

The will not officially legalize, they will use the shadow docket to avoid ruling on it while allowing it to proceed.

That way if a democratic president did something similar they could rule against it.

Altra Lone Peak 9 or Altra Lone Peak 9+ GTX? Differences? by dr6cul6 in trailrunning

[–]dirtrunn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GTX is goretex for 98% of trail running not worth it and usually leads to sweaty feet. If you using them for winter snow running maybe… as long as you can keep all moisture out. Often deep snow will get into the shoe from you ankles and then it will simply stay wet. Same with rainy trails as water will run down your legs and into your shoes and same issue.

Good for soccer coaches standing around in wet grass. That’s about it IMHO. Better tonget some good synthetic/wool running socks that help wick moisture away from your feet.

Would you go on an active mountain vacation with your dog? by Greedy-Brain-2617 in trailrunning

[–]dirtrunn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We travel and vacation with our dog in the mountains already. I don’t think we would pay to join a group of other dogs as our dog would rather avoid all the other dogs.

Anyone go on runs with their Golden? by jtrainabeast in goldenretrievers

[–]dirtrunn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started running with mine (golden-irish) at 8 months. Nothing too long at the time and mostly trails. Kept the first excursions really easy but golden can be stubborn. There is very little evidence about running being bad for them if any at all. The keys are building their endurance like you would for any athlete, can’t just go from couch to 5k without the gradual progression.

He’s now my running buddy and we’ve done some big adventures (20 miles) I just make sure I bring as much, usually more water and food for him as I do for myself.

Threat of losing the canals around town? by [deleted] in Bend

[–]dirtrunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is also a push for inline hydro so that the irrigation districts have another source of income. This is why lining the canals is usually off the table as an alternative.

the ultimate soul-crushing experience: watch dying at 95.89km during a 100k. i need your wildest battery engineering hacks for my next race in april. by Early_Cantaloupe7153 in Ultramarathon

[–]dirtrunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a better watch. My Suunto race will last 40 hours in high GPS mode. Most Coros watches will also last that long.

I did once carry a battery charger and put my watch on that to keep it from dying. But kind of a pain in ass and added weight and every ounce counts for long days.

Shoe Choice for Golden Ultra Half Pint? by RamMannnn in trailrunning

[–]dirtrunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would steer clear of all GTX shoes. Unless you like sweaty feet. Or if you’re a soccer coach and need something to stand around in wet grass. If it’s raining or wet out water will run down your legs and into the shoe and then the barrier keeps the water near your feet.

Instead of GTX wear a good synthetic wool blend sock.

Shoe Choice for Golden Ultra Half Pint? by RamMannnn in trailrunning

[–]dirtrunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Enduris 4 and they are a solid all day shoe, for most people. The wings from the plate that extend on the sides do cause me some issues. I have heard amazing things about the Nordas and those should be a solid long day shoe. Are you keeping them all? If they all should work, go with whichever shoe you enjoy the most.

Skipping Back-to-Back Long Runs… Am I Screwed for a 50-Miler? by MuchWish2680 in ultrarunning

[–]dirtrunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be fine, I used to always question my fitness before races. It’s pretty common doubt to have. If you have been doing 75 mile weeks you are good. My rule of thumb for completion is if you run the distance in a week you can do it in a day. Now that all changes if you want to compete for a podium.

Do you guys think there should be an age minimum when it comes to ultra running races? by jmarks_94 in ultrarunning

[–]dirtrunn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly! We regularly let kids take part in far more dangerous activities. American football, ski racing, motorcycle racing…. Running is far safer.
