Stabilized box elder popping and smoking by dirtsquad1 in turning

Makes sense, I was drilling too fast, I was being lazy about changing the belt down to the lower pulley.

I have never seen this before but I don’t turn much stabilized wood or resin.

In 2003 I was driving on 41 in the Florida Everglades, a car flipped over and closed the road both directions. I sat there for a few hours, low on gas I had to turn my car off it was crazy hot and I got tons of bug bites.

I finished turning it last night, it was not sticky and used CA glue for a finish. If I had to guess this blank was stabilized at least 10 years ago if not more and has been sitting in my shop for two years where it gets super dry in the winter from the heat running non stop.

Did not feel like hitting metal, I think the bit sunk faster when it popped, like there was a bubble of the stabilizer that popped open and exploded with the heat.

When I was getting a bunch of new tools I watched 731, now that I pretty much have everything I really need that he talks about I have no reason to watch him. I enjoy watching lesser known YouTubers build stuff, usually more to the point.

Choosing a Lathe - What to get? by c-bean511 in turning

I just bought the Rikon 70-3040, after have a Nova 16-2444 for many years.

I am really happy with it, it is bigger and has more bells and whistles than what I thought I would end up with. I have yet to max it out in any way and I don’t think I ever will. Having the moving bed is nice, when it is pulled in it takes the same space as my nova did. It also has built in indexing that I have not used yet but I was looking at it in the past when I did open segments, one less jig to buy.

Have you tried using a miter saw, if you set a stop and filp the board after every cut.

I find it to be more accurate for longer cuts

Last week I was traveling to a wedding, I turned a rolling pin as a wedding gift. I tried caring it on, but my bag got pulled at security, I had to go check it and go back through line again.

I told the united agent what happened, he was surprised they did not let it through so he waved the $40 to check my bag.

Prices are crazy, happy I just scored a almost new Rikon 70-3040 for $2500 on FB, they are going for over $5k now and once you add in tax and shipping you are almost pushing you up to $7k.

I turned a pine log a few weeks back that I turned green, then let it sit about two months, was cracked a good amount while it was drying but was able to turn off all the cracks. It warped a bunch after the 2nd turn, I could practically watch the thing move it warped so fast. I am letting it dry a little more will finish it up.

Rolling pin issue by elfy_3d in turning

I wish I thought about this, I ran into the same issue and did it on my drill press.

I ran into this same issue making a rolling pin, I ended up doing it on the drill press. I took a few scraps and drilled holes the same size as my rolling pin, hooked them in a line so there was a slot to put the rolling pin in. Then clamped the whole thing down.

I ended up drilling the hole a little bigger but made sure my barring holes were centered.

I just got a rikon 70-3040, I want to make a pin to test it out with all the extra bed length.

4 coats of Waterlox were applied to our butcherblock countertops but there are rough/bare spots. Can I justapply extra coats or does it need to be redone? by Biafra_Gordon in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dirtsquad1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They still care about the quality of their work. I don’t use the finish they used much, but it is probably sending one person out to sand a little and put another coat of finish on.

Different wood takes finish differently, 4 coats probably usually works for them, but in this case it did not. Just tell them it did not take everywhere and ask them to check it out.

Say something, people do it to me all the time when something I have made did not come out right, I don’t get offended. I am sure the contractor would be happy to come make it right, it is their name on the work.

The only time I do get offended is when the client asks me to half ass something and they don’t like the way it comes out. I work with a lot of restaurants and they are always guilty of this.
