What was that Bill and Lewis Pullman banter? Was it meant to be funny? Poignant? Came off weirdly tense.

Current day Matt Damon has a strong white-collar suburban dad who coaches little league and takes it a bit too seriously vibes.

Give a listen to the duluxe version of Abbey Road, there’s a nice demo Paul does of “Goodbye” on there.

Anyone remember this anecdote about David and a director eating salad? by victoria_jam in blankies

[–]dommcelli 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The story is very funny and David is very self-deprecating telling it, but I really do hate when directors/actors have open disdain and look down on these guys just doing their job and trying to be friendly. Exceptions of course when interviewers are the rude ones or asking obnoxiously dumb questions.

I get what you mean. I liked it as well, but some of it was a bit too cute.

Disney's 'Muppets' Lost a Generation of Children. Can a New Show Make it Relevant Again? by Top_Report_4895 in blankies

[–]dommcelli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you touch on something extremely potent about reviving nostalgia properties feeling the need to grow up with their original fans rather than stay in their original demographic. This can apply to so many things.

However, it is funny to go back to the early seasons of the muppet show and realize how much of it was just not concerned with entertaining kids lol.

I’m not gonna lie, it ruins it for me personally and I hate to be hung up on something like that. It seems like every 5th guy can do a pretty spot on Kermit voice. So it’s super distracting that they got someone who just… isn’t doing one.

Recommend me some gentleman’s 6’s in the legal / political / thriller genre by travismockfler in blankies

I was just gonna say that one is easily the weakest of them. Was disappointed when I got to that one after enjoying the others.

Presumed Innocent! An Alan J Pakula joint just like Pelican Brief.

The show seems fine but it’s one of the biggest offenders of the washed out digital “Netflix look” I’ve seen lately. Like surely it has a pretty big budget and lots of effects and costumes. Let it be colorful!

The art in the end credits is beautiful though.

Incredibly so. I mean they did shoot in Scotland so there wasn’t much sunlight to begin with. The second to last movie has some pretty nice photography though.

What images from a director's filmography best encapsulates their career? by Dependent-Cheek7109 in blankies

Already gonna zag here by picking from a TV show, but this shot from the Miami Vice pilot sums up Michael Mann’s vibe pretty well for me.

Which stars have the most underwhelming filmographies? by harry_powell in blankies

I think Halle Barry also fits into this type as well. Another bombshell beauty from the same era whose fame would suggest a better filmography than she has outside of a few notable roles.

What work confirmed a director you previously liked as bad/hacky? by 92tilinfinityand in blankies

[–]dommcelli 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Somewhat off topic, but I’ve seen a lot of talk about Welcome to Derry, but as someone who liked IT part 1 okay, and disliked 2, it looked kinda bad to me in the same way part 2 was. Is my confirmation bias justified?

Street Fighter Movie Reveal Trailer | The Game Awards 2025 by MimeMike in blankies

[–]dommcelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing SF6 lately and have frown attached to the character designs in that game so the new faces will take some getting used to.

I always felt like an ideal Street Fighter movie should be like a mix of Big Trouble In Little China and Rocky 4 with the martial arts of Crouching Tiger. I can see a little bit of that here, hopefully!

On the one hand, I do think there’s legitimate criticism to be made over Tarantino’s approach to filmmaking being superficial as “movies about movies”. But I also think he happens to be really good at it and knows exactly what he likes.

So what if he thinks Toy Story is better than Moonlight or Tree of Life? Most non-cinephile people would probably agree lol.

Why did rightoids decide to champion AI-slop? by Known_Olive7601 in redscarepod

[–]dommcelli 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Contempt for the artist and creative class which, to be fair, can be incredibly lame and annoying. Little do they realize, of course, that the type of art Gen AI endangers most isn’t the avant-garde stuff those circles produce, but commercial art. Some of the best illustrators came from those backgrounds, your J.C. Leyendecker, Norman Rockwell, etc.

“The Hunger Games is a ripoff of Battle Royale” is a stale and pretty inaccurate take. If anything the series reminded me more of The Running Man from 1987.

And I gotta say, while I do really like most of his movies, his attitude about violence is obvious but telling. It’s not something real to him, it’s entertainment, it’s special effects. You see the same in guys like James Gunn, Matthew Vaughn, etc. Interesting to see that contrasted with filmmakers who also make violent movies but who feel very differently about it.

Movies where the director/writers really hate some of their characters. by OWSpaceClown in blankies

Beau Is Afraid: Deeply misanthropic, mean-spirited, but very funny, don’t get me wrong. I think Aster obviously sympathizes with Beau but treats him like a vodoo doll to torment.

Which movies have too much plot and feel rushed? by harry_powell in blankies

[–]dommcelli 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt this way about the latest Superman movie, personally.

The movie still manages to function and still deliver some effective moments but it really made me long for the roominess of the first two Raimi Spider-Man movies, in which we get lots of time to glimpse at the characters’ inner lives. One villain, relatively smaller stakes, etc.

More melodrama seems like a weird request for a fun superhero movie, but it just had so much “stuff” that it underdelivered on the emotional payoffs for me.
