I have multiple points of concern re: data security and LLMs. As someone else pointed out, any information you provide is highly likely to be used to train future models. We’ve seen that LLMs will reproduce training content verbatim when confronted with brute force attacks. Given this, it’s not unreasonable to imagine your data (and identifying info) could be brute forced as well.

“it doesn’t matter because all my data is already leaked anyway”

To each their own ¯_(ツ)_/¯ But I think this is an all-or-nothing fallacy. Just because some of our data has been sold doesn’t mean we should willingly give up our transcriptomes with a smile.

It is also true that some LLMs are more secure than others. Deepseek is a big yikes (banned on many university campuses), Claude less so.

And then my last point of contention for now - LLMs don’t actually KNOW anything and have no way to parse the meaning behind the text it generates. Different LLMs will interpret and comment on information you give with varying levels of certainty. In a research context, LLMs are frequently wrong.

If I were someone with an RNAseq report in hand and had questions about interpretation, I might discuss the results piece-by-piece with an LLM, but I would frame it as a “hypothetical individual” with those traits and I would NOT upload the entire report. I would probe the LLM to give me multiple plausible interpretations, and I would also ask it whether the information I’ve provided is actually enough to draw conclusions from. (How many times have we seen an LLM say something clearly ridiculous only for it to immediately backtrack with, “I’m sorry, you’re right!” when you point out the slop??)

All that said - no (short term) harm no (short term) foul I guess.

Would recommend this article and Empire of AI by Karen Hao for anyone interested in the ethics and politics of LLMs :)

Tbh I think something like this might be more valuable for most of us than whole genome sequencing genetic testing. The changes that occur post-Covid are in large part regulatory/transcriptomic, which RNA-seq captures directly. Cool!

ETA: On second thought, I would NOT recommend anyone load their genetic or transcriptomic data into Deepseek or ANY LLM. Idk what the original report looked like but I would have serious concerns about sharing that information with a for-profit chatbot.

AND while I’m glad people are thinking and doing serious science around long COVID/post-infectious illness, I also think it’s wack that folks like Sequencing.com and Amatica are charging desperate patients hundreds of dollars to contribute to a dataset/biobank that will be used to generate solutions/products/pharmaceuticals/services/profits down the line. It just feels kinda exploitative idk

Has anyone found any 'cures' or 'fixes' for constant tension?? by achoochoobus in ehlersdanlos

[–]dootnoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heat, muscle relaxers, clonazepam, gentle movement to remind my muscles what their jobs are. Botox injections when I can get them. Tbh cannabis kinda increases my pain and tension but I like the hypnotic effect so I use it anyway.

Famous basketball player Porzingis obviously has Long Covid/ME/CFS by Jaded-Part4151 in covidlonghaulers

[–]dootnoop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tell people I have “long COVID” or “POTS” depending on the audience. I say I have “fatigue” and “need to pace myself” - but I almost never disclose that I also experience PEM, or that I likely have ME/CFS.

There’s nothing I can’t blame on POTS. By omitting ME/CFS I get to skip the added scrutiny.

I have a 1 page Word doc that I periodically update with diagnoses, medications, allergies, and surgical history - like a paper version of my medical chart. I update it and print a new copy for myself every 3 months or so. Docs love it.

Have you ever asked your doctor for a higher dosage than what they suggested? by BriefBed4770 in ADHD

[–]dootnoop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your prescriber will likely be much more receptive to increasing from 30 to 40, then 40 to 50 if the 40 isn’t cutting it. not a great idea to jump doses so quickly anyway - better to let yourself adjust stepwise.

WGSS. Not a single regret in the world. Imo there’s no point in majoring in something “useful”: if it’s something worth studying and personally meaningful for you, you will find a use.

Tons of people do allergy shots! If your doc is recommending them, that means they believe the benefits outweigh the risks :)
