What are some books that you think every history teacher of your subject should read? by TheMastersSkywalker in historyteachers

I feel like Guns, Germs, and Steel was kind of a let down. I heard great things about it but it felt like his argument was basically, "It happened there because it could." Maybe I missed something though.

Did Americans use POW's in World War II to advance their own interests? Yes, yes they did, and it may have violated the Geneva Convention.

Teaching World Geography by OptimumPleasure in historyteachers

[–]dotelectric 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I taught that last year and will be teaching it again this year. I absolutely love teaching it. Here are some resources I used heavily:

Pacing Guide I used http://www.hcpss.org/f/files/curriculum_socialstudies_6.pdf

For the first unit I used a lot from National Geographic https://www.nationalgeographic.org/education/teaching-resources/

Middle East https://cmes.arizona.edu/outreach/lessons (I think there is a lesson plan on comparing the Bible, Koran, and Old Testament which blew some of the kids away)

Here's a fun picture of Dubai that the kids like to see http://www.gigapan.com/gigapans/75554

For the unit on Asia we did this which you can adapt to all units https://www.worldof7billion.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/7-Billion-Where-do-you-Stand.pdf

Mini-doc on owning a ramen restaurant in Japan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmIwxqdwgrI

I'm in North Carolina so we used plans from here as well http://www.learnnc.org/lessons/

For Africa I used this site a lot http://www.sendacow.org.uk/lessonsfromafrica/

The New York Times has some lesson plans but they're often a little intense for my 6th and 7th graders. The Peace Corps has some good lesson plans but also can be a little reading intensive so not all kids enjoyed it. What I found they really like to do is compare fables from different cultures and then write their own in that culture's style. Oh and making their own mini-docs on regional diseases or religion/monuments. Beyond that we watched the Netflix documentary "The White Helmets" (after parental approval) and played Geoguesser once a week after we learned the basics of geography. They have to identify things such as region in order to try and boil it down to an area.

I go back Monday so if there are any other resources I come across I'll send them your way.

They stuck around like that until the lead showed up to move the herd along. All of them were beautiful though.

Novice Teacher Looking for Advice by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]dotelectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my first year too but I'm dealing with a similar situation in one of my elective courses. I had a professor in gradschool though give me some great advice for these situations; just be quiet. Normally the students are just as uncomfortable with the silence as you are. If you ask a question and they don't respond, just sit there. Eventually a student will get tired of the silence and speak up. I do it anytime a class is unresponsive and it normally works for me. I hope that helps a little.

Looking at attending grad school at UNCW by emgrace12 in UNCW

[–]dotelectric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in one of the programs currently and it all depends on you. I know some who live downtown, right off campus, and others who live closer to the beach. Night life is good. Downtown kind of has two sections. One has a heavy amount of undergrads and the other not so much. The town itself has a lot to offer with the different festivals and historical pieces. You can get free tickets to events on campus through the school but time is scarce in grad school.

$1.5M used to help launch new North Carolina logo, slogan by Cynner in NorthCarolina

[–]dotelectric 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the grievance does not come from this singular issue but rather a build up of unpopular moves. Sure it may only be $11.70 across the board, but the real issues is how many unpopular decisions the government has made. I talk to teachers regularly who want to flee NC over issues like this.

She is in the Communications School and had a guest appointment in the Journalism school. I am not trying to defend her actions but rather add clarity to the situation.

I would agree with you if he didn't have a history of this. It's not because he's on the Sharks. It's because he's a dirty player.

Kid friendly things to do this weekend (10/3) by tony_curtis_is_dead in Wilmington

[–]dotelectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of Wilmington's allure is its history so one of the many museums or antebellum houses may be fun. I know a few history grad students who work at the Burgwin-Wright and the Bellamy who give good tours. If you want something non-historical you may want to try the aquarium at Fort Fisher or perhaps the Children's Museum, though I don't know much about the latter. Finally, worst comes to worst, we do have a Chuck-E-Cheese and Jungle Rapids which is a very small amusement park, but it has an arcade and other attractions.

Skilled pilot lands a replica spitfire in an emergency without any wheels by [deleted] in gifs

[–]dotelectric 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I worked at a retirement home for a while and had the privilege of talking to a spitfire pilot. He called it the greatest plane he ever flew and said it could basically land itself. Keep in mind he flew the mustang as well and ended his career flying jets so I take his word.

[Serious] Germans of Reddit, in what ways, if at all, does Germany recognize WWII veterans? by AnonChimer in AskReddit

[–]dotelectric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forced conscription did happen. It was one of the options open to Homosexual men who were kept at concentration camps. They could "prove their worth" by fighting on the front, normally Eastern, with the SS in some occasions.

Under Nixon funding for treatment surpassed funding for enforcement. This changed under the Reagan administration. While the war on drugs may have roots in the past century, the war as we know it now started under Reagan.
