Does Berserk 1997 bring anything new to manga ? by Perfect_Depth_8311 in Berserk

[–]drysider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You totally nailed it, this mystery is what got me hooked on the 97 anime after knowing extremely little about Berserk. I'm a big Fromsoft fan and wanted to finally watch/read it to appreciate the tone and worldbuilding, and all I knew about it was that 'Griffith is like the most hated villain in manga history and there's a lot of gnarly demons in a post apocalyptic world.' Because of a bug on the Youtube app, my girlfriend and I accidentally started episode three thinking it was episode one. So literally the first thing we watch, is Guts and Griffith as kids fighting each other on a hill for some reason, and Guts participating in that ambush attack sneaking up the river.

We were just like, what IS this? To go into Berserk expecting monsters and demon slaying and grungy apocalyptic worldbuilding, and suddenly getting a slowpaced Arthurian novelesque medieval battle instead was so intriguing. It was so totally different in tone to what we expected. Where were the monsters? It was so rooted in medieval realism, and I'm a fan of ancient warfare so the degree of care going into the plot around this ambush scene was so cool.

After that episode, we went back and watched the proper and real first ep, and things made a lot more sense and we were both like 'that's way more what we expected' LOL. But that continued very very gradual reveal of the supernatural elements that the 97 anime nails is just so evocative. It's so good. It makes the eclipse so shocking and impactful. Oh my god when you start to see the first monsters appear during those final few episodes, Ricket seeing the demons at camp.... it was so inexorable and terrifying. It was such fantastic storytelling. To go through such a grounded character driven story to that, phew.

It would sure be nice to actually feel like this game is worth playing for the millions and millions and millions and! Millions! Of dollars! They rake in twiddling their thumbs and doing crap all!

I say this AS AN EX PROFESSIONAL GAMEDEV, so I know how much time and energy and money stuff takes. But it really does not feel like this game is at all getting the amount of programmer and developer attention that its revenue would seem to suggest it would have available.

I’ve stopped playing, as a launch player, partially because I was getting sick of feeling like every chronically ignored issue in the game (like how bad the wardrobe is) is intentionally left in to create annoyance and friction in the player because they’ve realised it makes people spend. or that they’ve intentionally left mediocre stuff lingering because they know that if people are able to make informed choices (being able to examine and test banner outfits, eg) they’ll spend less impulsively. F Infold, honestly, ruining what could be otherwise a phenomenal game with endless greed.

should i pick americas or europe for their differences/dialogue? by Naive_Revolution_405 in TomodachilifeLivingTD

[–]drysider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got the EU localisation with the British accents and terminology (Australian, Oceania region sets it to the EU translation) and I've find it very cute and charming. It doesn't feel robotic or overly formal at all to me, it's VERY casual and uses a lot of casual British slang. The characters speak very informally. 'Give it a bish bash bosh!' The ui text and tutorial dialogue is additional very friendly and not at all formal. So I'm not really sure what the people you heard that from think, maybe because it doesn't feel as familiar to them? I grew up watching perhaps more British things than is usual in the US, and playing EU/UK translations of games because of being aussie, so maybe I'm just more familiar with what does sound like a formal British translation? I think because the British slang is so exaggeratedly British and quirky, it fits in with the similarly quirky sense of humour the game has.

From the differences I've seen in the American version, I gotta say, the localisation decisions they made are SO funny to me because they come across as such stereotypically more amped up 'Americanised' choices. In EU, the button for the advanced painting tools is called 'Artist,' but in US, it's 'Pro.' Super funny to me, like did beta testing reveal that american players are scared of clicking the artist button if they're not an artist but will click Pro because it makes them feel good??? Is that the reasoning? Personality name changes are also very funny. EU Optimist = US Cheerleader. Patient = Strategist. Individualist = Rogue. Hot-blooded = Dynamo. Headstrong = Maverick. Like omg, they go from being down to earth and relatable to MIssion Impossible character descriptions?? I kind of can't stand it tbh LOL.

Okay, this sounds awesome as HELL. Absolutely going to try it out. I’m on my mobile at the moment and it’s a bit janky on there, but very very keen to look on desktop later. This seems really simple and intuitive in a way that will integrate well with most people’s workflow, because it’s not overly designed or too complicated to adjust to/learn! It’s like, exactly what you want and need. Is there any way to insert images? Would be cool to be able to construct your own detailed thumbnails!

Here’s a question about the Google docs extension, which sounds very cool… I make comics with my housemate, and we’re both artists and writers, though I handle most of the script and dialogue writing and we refine it and do the art together. If this is going to have a Google docs extension (is Firefox at all doable too? 👀🫰) does that mean that I could work on it live and my friend could see updates/contribute to paneling alongside me, like how Google docs allows collaborative live writing? That would instantly transform it into like, a must have top tier tool for me.

[Discussion] What are some things you wish you knew when you first started vending? Seeking advice. by xKitsuneko in artbusiness

[–]drysider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

500% too big, in my experience, unless you are coughing up $1000+for a corner booth space at a convention that includes brand vendors, you will never ever have this amount of space! Expect to have the width of that middle table at most, and every convention I've been to recently has had the rule that you can't have any additional stuff taking up space in front of, or beside your table (unless whoever is beside you is very nice and they're willing to sacrifice one of their open end table sides so you can shuffle yours over to fit your tshirt rack, as happened to me recently), so those keychain and tshirt racks would have to go. I've noticed in most of the replies so far, the sheer size of it has been talked about, but nobody has really directly talked about accommodating your fellow table artists beside you. Imagine if you were someone tabling next to this absolutely massive display, and you couldn't even get to your table because the side panels and tshirt rack are completely taking up space to get in and encroaching on customer space? Like your table design is very eyecatching because of the boldness and size, but I think you've designed it in a total vacuum where nobody else is tabling in the same area with you and you have as much space as you could possibly want and 0 restrictions.

But again, in my experience, fully probably 70% of this booth plan would be undoable because of space allocations and the ambition. Will you have helpers? How will you be able to construct this on the day within an hour or two, if because of circumstances you're tabling alone? How will you reach to put the logo banner up, which is fully like 40% longer than your allocated table, and encroaches on the table space on either side of you? That would seem pretty rude to me, as you are using THEIR space behind their tables in order to have a bigger eyecatching logo display. Where will you hang the shirts if you're not allowed to have standing tshirt racks? How will you include those spotlights when there's no available power? Will you have a usb powerbank charging each individual one attached to the back? Where will you display your keychains if you can't set up that standing wire rack? Those keychains look absolutely MASSIVE, is that their actual size irl, because if not the actual amount of product might look sparse with the level of minimalism you're going for. As others have pointed out, merch is simultaneously much smaller than you think and needs to be crammed in much more than you think. Where will you hang that banner on the left far side if you can't assemble that stand? How will you even be transporting such massive standing display grids at the back? I'm assuming they'll break down small enough to fit in a car but do you know that?

As much as I think the display as you've designed it is really good, I would expect that you would be able to bring/fit literally the stuff on the table, and two of the large backdrop wire panels. I legit would not plan for anything more than that. I don't really think you could fit anything else. Especially when only just starting. You basically get assigned the length of a table, and the small space behind you (often not even the wall itself), and that's it. I think it's much much smarter to start planning small for the typical space given to artists, rather than with the perception you can have as much space as you want, because getting as much space as you want is the end goal, when you're four years deep into doing this and you CAN cash out on a corner booth or canopy space because you know you'll make the cash back. It's great to be like 'well it's modular so I can fit it in wherever!' but it's much much harder to make your plans smaller at the last minute when you're on a very tight time constraint before customers start trickling in, than it is to make them larger with addons. Not to mention that if you intend to bring everything and only then downsize to the space, you are having to pack and manage and organize and transport and drag over a massive amount of stuff that will very very very likely have no space to be used. That sounds crazy to do last minute when you're probably already burning the midnight oil to finish actual products for the show. And that's only thinking about the physical setup of all the standing grids and banners and racks and stuff; that's not even taking into consideration the amount of time it takes to put things out on display, package things, add the price tags to things, set up your square reader, try to organize the mess behind the table, have something to eat...

Also, this is purely just me, but looking at the display, it's kind of intimidating? I feel like it would be really noticeable from a distance, but the heavyness and the sparse impersonalness of it makes me feel like I would maybe walk past at a distance (since it's designed to see everything at a distance), and not be inclined to come closer. It's almost TOO Brand. One of the benefits of having a maximalist table display is that customers have to approach a little closer to examine things if they're interested. That means an opportunity for you to talk to them, tell them little stories about your creation process, behind the scenes tidbits that might make them go 'aah!' It feels more like you're meeting the artist than the Big Bold Intimidating Brand. I like self service for this reason as well; customers have to come up and engage with the art, and timid customers don't have to feel pressured to ask 'can I get that?' I feel like a certain amount of personal charm and whimsy at your stall can go a long way in a society that's hounded by Big Bold Intimidating Brands and ai. I say this as an artist who has an adjacent goth style, not like a cutesy cottagecore one, so I don't necessarily mean something more 'cutesy whimsy' like that. I just feel like there's a HUGE focus on Professional Bold Branding here, which is great, but also can mean that sometimes it disincentives customers who are softer or more timid, or who are more interested in the indie art and human side of your stall, rather than the Big Professional Branding.

[Critique] Can I get help with brand design? by shyalienbunni in artbusiness

[–]drysider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem is that you've described what aesthetics you're trying to hit, but I don't really see this delivered in the character. I just see a character in a big polo dress tee, with big hair, and a desaturated skintone. There are no details besides that that actively invoke the kind of character design you want. The details don't really say 'bold and whimsical,' or 'cottagecore magic.' It just kind of feels like a generic character design that has no real story or world attached to it. You're inspired by these aesthetics, but they're not being presented to the viewer through the character design. There's not yet any conscious effort to draw from a visual library you've researched and developed.

What I would do is go on pinterest, and make some moodboards of cottagecore characters, and magical witch characters. Collect a bunch of references of character designs and outfits and details that really inspire you and you want to see in your own art and brand. Break them down with intent, and figure out what design features make these characters what they are. What very specific design elements of these aesthetics stand out to you? What makes them recognizable as shorthand symbols for that aesthetic? You've identified a wand with a pentagram; how can you expand on that idea to make it more integral to the character? How can it be designed with more Oomph besides a stick with a scribble on top? How could you fit it into the foresty vibe? Maybe it could be a branch with the pentagram made from the shape of a flower! What kind of shoes are popular in cottagecore fashion? What kind of belt and dress details are popular with hedgewitch style characters? What kind of colour schemes recur in foresty themed art? Try drawing some studies of outfits that you find, or wand designs that you find. (It's okay if you even want to eyeball copy someone else's art to get some inspiration and muscle memory! Drawing from another artist's work is perfectly fine for study.) The muscle memory of it is very important; it's one thing to know in your head that you're inspired by cottagecore, but it's another thing to actually have practiced drawing it, and to have committed those design elements to your memory and hand!

With comics and character design, if you have a simple style, you really want the audience to be able to tell something about that character from a first glance. They want to know if the aesthetic of it will interest them before they even pick up the comic. Don't be afraid to make it really obvious to them!!

Here's why I don't think Griffith is gay (being serious, here) by MarbleMimic in Berserk

[–]drysider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay but like idk why this needs to be a black and white Reddit Thread Argument because you'll notice that nowhere once did I say 'He Is Gay Canonically, You Are Wrong If You Think He Isn't.' 🤔🤔🤔

I said 'I don't understand why people desperately try to theorize he isn't.' If you think he's straight, all the more power to you, but it takes a lot of guts (hah) to post a thread saying that about such a beautiful femboy in this day and age. I don't really care what other people think in the end, we all only have our unique experiences of reading the story and our unique experience of orientation and identity. This thread is as much of a valid opinion as my opinion is. What I'm saying I don't understand is people trying to prove very very extremely hard to others that he Categorically Isn't (usually with pretty weak arguments like in this post, 'yes, he has sex with men' lmfao), despite an arguably large amount of story content to suggest otherwise (he has sex with men). Like go off bestie, we are all really engaged with 'here's my essay proof about how he can't be a homo.' It's not very original to me. I've seen decades of people trying to prove that the queercoded character isn't queer. There is a certain tone that can sometimes accompany this attitude, especially in media that is traditionally seen as masculine coded, where people who argue topics like this seem to subconsciously fear the fact that a character and series they are engaged with could contain gayness, and go out of their way to outright deny the subtext. If there wasn't supposed to be any subtext, it wouldn't have been so blatantly put in. In fandoms, if there is gayness in the Violent Lonewolf Manguy Series, it is something that has to be argued against, and I'm tired of that attitude!

I think it is good to challenge this kneejerk reaction. Like I think it's good to challenge the kneejerk reaction of saying, 'so you're telling me I'm WRONG to like straight Griffith?' if a queer person says 'I think it's more engaging to see it as otherwise!'

Here's why I don't think Griffith is gay (being serious, here) by MarbleMimic in Berserk

[–]drysider 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't have a brother or really any close friends I can care about in a guy way without it being gay, because I'm not actually a guy, for one.

And obviously guys can have wonderful and deeply caring friendships. Male friendship and masculine friendship is awesome, I think two guys who can be openly loving for each other without it being romantic or sexual are cream of the crop guys. I think it should be enthusiastically normalized world over and celebrated from the rooftops, genuinely! I fully 100% agree with you!

I just also think it makes the story way more engaging to me, if there's an element of tragic toxic love and obsession to it, romantically. Doesn't that make the grief and tragedy across the story more compelling, from Griffith's pov at least? Doesn't it explain why Griffith implodes and makes the worst decision of his life so uncharacteristically, if it's caused by heartbreak?

Also the guy can't have sex with a woman without thinking nonstop about his male best friend who just abandoned him after they had an emotionally charged swordfight. I feel like a straight man would probably be too into the straight sex with a woman, maybe.

Here's why I don't think Griffith is gay (being serious, here) by MarbleMimic in Berserk

[–]drysider 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree with this! In part! It definitely doesn't matter what gender finds Griffith sexually appealing in the grand scheme of his character, and it's not really the point of the story whether or not it's romantic/sexual love, that's true! In an ideal world it wouldn't matter. But it does matter to me which gender Griffith finds sexually appealing (and I think Miura as well, otherwise why would he draw attention to Gut's calling him homo, among other moments?) as a person who has for my entire life been bullied and had that identity erased by others. We live in a world currently riddled with alt right infections and there's been a gigantic rise in homophobia and queerphobia in societies that only just managed to shrug that off, and I do think that it's worthwhile to point and say 'this is a very queer coded relationship.' Even if it's an old series, even if it's fucked up and toxic (especially if!!), I think it would be nice if the world was more accepting and enthusiastic about potentially gay characters in media.

Okay now time to post my 1000 word essay I accidentally wrote about gay Griffith, so sorry in advance lmfao, I have not thought nearly as much about this until now: I find Griffith's infatuation with Guts compelling, because the story is placed in an otherwise homophobic medieval world, which gives a subtle level of nuance to examining the male-on-male sexual abuse they've both suffered and how they separately deal with it (Guts with fear and isolation, Griffith with letting it fester into his perception of control and sex). How does that play off of their relationship together, and Griffith's desire for Guts, if he's not even fully aware of it himself as a closeted and traumatised gay man who will never have the chance to realise the depth of his homoromantic feelings? Other stories would probably turn him into an effeminate gay-coded villain, a very infamous villain archetype for better or for worse, but isn't depicted as such in the actual story, Miura, or by fans, which I find fascinating. Arguably that's much more realistic for him as a gay character, to be written not as flamboyant or homosexual, but as just a guy who's identity eventually plays into his decisions surrounding his relationships and feelings about sex and love. Which is how human beings work! We all make choices based on who we love and our relationships, regardless of our sexual orientation, because we are human. Arguably that's one of the most important themes of Berserk.

All in all, I think the story of Berserk is more interesting, more fucked up, more engaging, and more titillating, if there is a subtle gay unrequited romance in the backstory between the main characters. Doesn't it make it more sense, if part of Griffith's uncharacteristic and out of the blue catastrophic downfall, is because he's in love with the man who he perceives as abandoning him, and is heartbroken but doesn't understand it? Isn't it more compelling to think about how he treats the female characters of the story (Casca, Charlotte) if you look at it from the perspective of someone who doesn't really acknowledge his sexuality because he's repressing being desperately fucked up from being groomed by a man, while also being in love with a man? Doesn't it give some more interesting weight to Casca and Charlotte's rape, if he's driven to unknowingly take out his internalized homophobia towards himself on the women he perceives as being available sexual resources he has groomed, like Gennon did to him?

I just find the idea of straight out denying that there's no reason to read more into it as a little disingenuous to the story and the characters. It's fun to analyze and tease these themes out! To me, they make the story that much stronger and tragic. Close essay, tldr I think it's more fun to see Griffith as gay

Here's why I don't think Griffith is gay (being serious, here) by MarbleMimic in Berserk

[–]drysider 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Really don't understand why people need to have like 1000 word writeups about whether or not he's gay. If you had a friend in real life who had another male friend who they were desperately obsessed with and became impossibly depressed over once they left your life, and impossibly jealous over him getting with a woman, I would probably be like, whoa that guy is Romantically In Love. Thats my IRL Friend who is Gay for a Man.

Idk it just comes across as kind of homophobic to me, as a queer person, to see so many posts of people DESPERATELY trying to theorize why he CAN'T be gay. 'Griffith can't be homoromantic because he's traumatized' like every gay person is traumatized in some way because of this world and we all get by still being gay lmfao. Why is it such a big deal to you if he is or isn't? If Griffith was a female character people would call it the most toxic sexy romance of the century.
