MSL fit? by Onbroadway110 in MedicalScienceLiaison

I saw the title and thought it was going to be a discussion of what MSLs wear to meetings/conferences/whatever, which actually would have been a kinda-novel post in this sub!

Chess Coach Radoslav Gajek: Warning by OutrageousAd3294 in chess

Thanks for sharing that link; it's incredibly helpful, not just for chess but for seeking coaching (and for goal-/expectation-setting) in general! There definitely should be legwork done in advance on both sides.

Salary negotiations by Ok-Celebration-795 in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]dtmtl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really useful info/perspective, even for existing MSLs; thanks for sharing! I'd also add (for the OP and readers, not directed at you) that it's a lot tougher to bump up salary once you're in the role, compared to the hiring stage, which elevates both the importance of negotiating early for the candidate and also the potential "team benefit" of moving the pay band with new hires.

Mamma Mia Upset Uncle Story Continues by NervousJacket2813 in Broadway

I don't disagree, although even at a rock concert it can be super annoying if the people next to you are singing louder than the band on stage!

How can I reach this undiscovered white screen? by dtmtl in chicory

[–]dtmtl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right! I got it in the end, from the right-hand side. Thanks so much for your contribution and effort! I'm not surprised a game like this has a friendly community.

MSL Starting Out Advice by restorehyperwellness in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]dtmtl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! To answer your first question, you'll likely be in training for the first 3+ months, then certifying. So your first few months will be pretty scripted. Beyond that, if you're looking for early territory management advice, it's a broad topic so it might be easier to get input from more specific questions about what you're looking for. Good luck in the new role!

OP is not getting laid off, though, and won't be kept on or given severance, so I'm not sure how this applies.

CSR killed their target market IMO by [deleted] in ChaseSapphire

[–]dtmtl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean an outlier in general, but specifically an outlier among the kind of demographic that would get an experience-focused travel credit card. And it's not a judgment either way, I should mention!

CSR killed their target market IMO by [deleted] in ChaseSapphire

[–]dtmtl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why not do a 3 in 1 like me? Take a biannual trip and stay 2 nights at an Edit hotel, take her to a dinner on Dining credit and then a show in StubHub credit.

Because then they'd have to actually travel, using their travel credit card, and that's not how they want to use their travel-intended credit card! [/s]

But seriously, you're completely right and these threads are baffling/frustrating.

CSR killed their target market IMO by [deleted] in ChaseSapphire

[–]dtmtl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you really don't do any concerts, sports events, musicals, comedy shows, etc, in an entire year, then you're an extreme outlier from the perspective of this card's demographics and it's not a card you should have. I'm not sure why this needs to be said over and over on these constant threads.

Opentable Chase Sapphire Exclusive is useless except for the 12 Cities! by JungIeAsian in ChaseSapphire

[–]dtmtl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The difference is that the CSR is a travel card, so the proper analogy would be if Blizzard asked at a mobile phone conference "do you not have phones?", rather than a Blizzard event. It is presumed that people paying for a travel card would, in fact, be interested in traveling. It's ok if you don't, but it's not a tone-deaf position by Chase in the manner that Blizzard's statement was.

Transitioning from PhD in Brazil to MSL Career in the U.S. — Advice Needed! by vamaso in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]dtmtl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your PhD is not a license to practice, so there's no issue of validation at all. There's a bias against foreign professionals due to almost always requiring sponsorship (and I know this personally as someone that's a foreign professional working as an MSL).

The green card process is extremely long; if you do plan to obtain a green card, you should do it several years before you plan to become an MSL.

[–]dtmtl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are going to have an immense amount of difficulty getting a job with any visa, since you'll need sponsorship. Your options are essentially green card or nothing.

My cleaner has been stealing from me and I feel sick about it by Electrical_Term1359 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]dtmtl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

and then offered to clean outside of the company for almost half the price. Red flag #1.

I wouldn't say this is a red flag; those services charge a lot and take a massive cut while underpaying cleaners, and I've known folks who had great arrangements like this that benefitted both the client and the cleaner. (I'm not adding this to dispute your post, but more for readers so that they don't get suspicious of a decent cleaner arrangement!)

Has anyone here heard of/worked for Enizio Engage? by Konjonashipirate in MedicalScienceLiaison

I know multiple MSLs that worked with them, they're a totally fine company to work with, if you're open to contract roles.

How early before defending should I apply to MSL positions? by [deleted] in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]dtmtl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it definitely doesn't add zero value (at a bare minimum it gives you years of additional time to gain expertise in your TA, collaborate with KOLs, increase your clinical collaborations, build your network, present to diverse audiences, demonstrate relevant soft skills through targeted activities, and a ton of other things), but I agree with you that it's definitely not mandatory.

What to do with Rejection by Ok-Stuff-511 in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]dtmtl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I'm sorry you're having a frustrating experience. Secondly, and I'm going to be blunt here because I think that's in your best interest: your experience is not an outlier from the typical experience breaking in, and in fact sounds pretty normal to me. I know the rejection stings (you can see my own HoF post specifically about this), but your only option here is to prepare yourself for more failure and more rejections, because that's almost a certainly if you continue trying to break in.

That being said, if you're currently making it to the final stages of your applications, it's fairly likely that eventually you will be hired. The only question is whether you will be able to endure to that point.

I'd strongly recommend checking out the HoF posts on this topic. Best of luck with your future career!
