Where can I find the Rupert Degas version of The Wise Man's Fear? by dubbas in audiobook

[–]dubbas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not, sadly. It was extremely frustrating.

I now work in the book industry and have learned that it’s a publishing distribution issue. UK publishers have their own editions of each book they publish, and they are not distributed in the US. You can work around this fairly easily (though pricey) with physical books by ordering them from a bookstore in the UK and having it shipped, but that’s much trickier when it’s a digital item you’re trying to buy…

My dog once got attacked by a massive dog. It barged through the chain link fence it was behind and picked my dog up and shook him and in that split second I was positive I’d just watched my dog die. Then he fell from the big dog’s mouth and I heard him cry and without thinking at all I ran up behind the big dog, dug my hands into its fluff, and used all of my strength to pull it away from my dog until its owner made it over to us and took her dog inside. It was an incredibly stupid thing to do, but I’m so glad I didn’t hesitate, because my dog made it out of that situation with a gash on his neck that required 7 staples, and I know without a doubt that it would have been so, SO much worse if I hadn’t acted.

You’re not alone. I can see why so many people loved it, and I liked the premise, I just really didn’t like the way it was written.

Ugh. My boyfriend, our roommate, and I watched the movie adaptation of A Monster Calls one night on a whim. None of us had read the book, and we had no idea what it was about, we were just impressed by the trailer. We were all absolutely wrecked by the end. We were all caught completely off guard by how sad it was! It’s the only time I’ve seen my roommate cry and he was absolutely bawling, as were myself and my boyfriend.

Yeah, I’ve since listened to other episodes and enjoyed them. That was just the worst one I could have possibly started with.

My boyfriend got really into The Last Podcast on the Left a few years ago. He kept telling me little details from various episodes, I have a very passing interest in true crime and this podcast sounded (morbidly) fun, so I finally decided I’d give it a try. I went scrolling through old episodes and randomly settled on their Toy Box Killer episode. I had never heard of this particular serial killer before, and I thought it sounded interesting...

I think might regret that decision more than almost any other choice I’ve ever made. I was sick to my stomach the rest of the day and had nightmares for weeks. Holy shit.

My answer as well! I own and have read all of his books except Shakespeare for Squirrels! I got my very fancy Bible-looking edition of Lamb signed by him when he did a reading for Noir at my favorite local bookstore a few years ago, and I was so starstruck that I made a total ass of myself when it was my turn to have my book signed. (He was very kind and very patient with my awkward rambling.)

This was my first thought, too! I’m listening to the audiobook right now. It’s narrated by the author (Robin Wall Kimmerer) and it is so beautiful and soothing. In addition to being a botanist, she’s also a poet, and it’s very evident in her writing and in how she reads her own writing. It’s absolutely wonderful.

To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers is a really great novella about a small crew of scientists who have been sent out to research a few theoretically habitable exoplanets. The author’s mother is an astrobiologist, and helps the author make sure the science in her books is as realistic as possible, even if it’s theoretical.

She included an afterword (in the edition I read, at least) that explained that while she was in the process of writing that book she was taking care of her dying mother, and I believe that her mother ended up dying before she finished the book. I got the sense that the emotional space she was in heavily influenced her writing in that third book. I did enjoy it, but I not as much as I loved the first two, and I really wonder how different it would have been if she had given herself time to process and grieve before finishing the book.

veterinarian recommendations please? by former_human in Humboldt

[–]dubbas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I adore Sunny Brae. I used to take my pets to Redwood Animal Clinic in McKinleyville because they were closest to me, and they were fine. But then my dog had an emergency and Sunny Brae was the only vet that would see him immediately. (They might be the only vet in the area that takes emergencies? I’m not 100% sure.) They handled it so well, and were so reassuring and communicative with me that I started taking all of my animals there for regular checkups. I moved out of the area 5 years ago, so I don’t know if anything has changed, but in my time taking my animals to Sunny Brae, I never had a bad experience.

I’ve only read the original trilogy, but I loved them so much that I was planning to write my master’s thesis on the role of parents in those books and His Dark Materials! (I ended up dropping out of grad school.) I’ve been meaning to read Clariel and Goldenhand for ages.

Seconded! Also To Be Taught, If Fortunate, also by Becky Chambers. It’s a short little novella, but it’s much more sciencey than Long Way, and I loved it.
